2. function not data, You assume that is work, it is what I have always done.
Edited on Wed Jun-22-11 12:50 PM by RandomThoughts
But by your presumption of it being work, they are guilty of not paying for work done, another fault.

And it won't help them, they can't understand it.

It does show that I am due beer and travel money, and even gets some to ignore that when they know it true, allowing for much aggressive defensive actions.

3. Things are going to have to get a whole lot worse, first,
and you're going to have to see small wildcat strikes around the country before you can even dream about a one day general strike.

Sadly, I think we've hit the point of no return and this is all likely to happen.

4. It might be, but I think the American Public is as ready as we'll ever be
Right now we need to turn up the volume to eleven, and start spreading the news.

Freeway blogs, repurposed billboards, internet signatures, call-ins to talk show should all be saying "General Strike Now!" or, once we have a date, give that date.

5. I saw the thread at the link in the Latest Page.
It's just under this kick for it. I don't understand why you posted this thread so soon after posting the first one.

You could still edit the title on that one. If you post a thread, people will come. A second post about the first post, immediately after the first post will not get better results.

I mean, you're free to do it, of course, but it doesn't make much sense.

13. Is what personal?
I saw your posts. I replied. I made a suggestion. If you check, you'll see that I've replied to a number of threads today. I'm between contracts, so I have time to spend on DU today.

15. I'm offering advice and asking pertinent questions in that
other thread, not attacking you. General Strikes are a tough thing to organize. I just don't want you to be disappointed. We've never really managed to bring one off in the US. I suspect it's going to take different circumstances than the current ones to make it happen.

6. What I think is that people will tease you about your idealism
and post whimsical one offs in this thread, if they post anything at all. Why?

Because the methods of self medication are still available, and because people are afraid to risk what little they have left.

First, find a way to shut off the things that numb us to the pain.

The pain will quickly replace the fear, and you'll have an activist country in no time at all.

16. Now??? Doesn't the working class need to be organized first before a General Strike is realistic?
Edited on Wed Jun-22-11 02:14 PM by Better Believe It
What workers will participate in your call for a General Political Strike and what are the economic/political demands?

Only 7% of workers in private industry are even union members!

Much political and economic organization of the working class remains to be done before a call for a General Political Strike against the Republican and Democratic party leadership of government institutions will be followed by tens of millions of workers.

for seven years, and even there I'd say upwards of 40% of the employees (non-managerial) voted Republican--even though it clearly wasn't in their best interest to do so.

I currently work for an energy company and a large Union (CWA I believe) sent out feelers to some of the customer service reps that might be interested in a organizing campaign, and I heard it was soundly rejected. Senior management asked us in mid level if they should be concerned, and everyone of us relied "No", as there just isn't any tangible interest.

The point being people on the lower end of the company pay scale routinely reject the opportunity to join a Union, yet some feel they would engage in a general strike?

It will never, ever happen.

19. There is value in trying to organize this but it would take a few months.
Reach out to unions, poverty orgs, moveon.org,

There is some organizing around October 15th.

24. "Come back to reality" Yeah, that defeatist attitude will work great
I'd argue about how this would be a good thing, that the unemployed can strike as well - and how striking is much more than not showing up to work. That striking involves shutting the machine down, not just staying home from work and watching soaps, but somehow I think that would be lost on you.
