I’ve been thinking about trinity. Actually I’ve been thinking about things in threes, three ways, the good-the bad- the ugly, good cop–bad cop-compromise cop, bad news – good news – deaths, agenda – lobbyists – candidates/ parties, and drama. What is there about the number three? We have been brought up to TH*NK that the really important things come in three’s, not two’s, or four’s or even one’s (although I must admit being an only child has had its benefits with no real downside). In Christian theology, we contemplate a three fold GOD-head. There is the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. They work together, but each has its own role or function.

You see by having things in threes, you allow for both sides and a compromise position. When you have threes there is more room for maneuvering in a story line; be that in a book, a movie, or a TV show. There is room beyond the flip flop from only one side to the other.

A threefold cast of players actually allows for six outcomes, or confrontations --- you have A, B, C, AB, AC, or BC. (OK, I know you are TH*NK*NG what about ABC as a seventh? I won’t go there.) Hollywood and television love to exploit the possibilities of “the three:” the three ways in “relationships,” the good-the bad- the ugly, or good cop–bad cop-compromise cop in their hours of mindless plots and character interactions. I was raised in a household that had some strange fixation with the number three. My home consisted of my mother, my father, and me. I still always look for the second, and the third event whenever I hear of some good news, some bad news, or particularly a death of someone I know. There is no rational explanation for this, but good things, bad things, and deaths do seem to happen in threes.
