Michael Moore got me defriended on Facebook.
Edited on Tue Jun-21-11 04:28 AM by yorgatron
but I don't blame him.

I found this article;

http://www.michaelmoore.com/words/mike-friends-blog/how-the-mayors-debated-and-passed-an-antiwar-resolution

and got a message from someone who I had reluctantly accepted a friend awhile back.
we've gone back and forth over a few things,but he really has a bug up his ass about Michael Moore,and stated;

"That guy lost all credibility with me when he misused veterans and lied about it."

which I find puzzling.

what the hell is he talking about?

:wtf:

edit for speling.

1. Vet sued him for using his image and misreprepresenting his position, courts found no defamation:

3. Something like this came up with a friend once...
...not specifically the "misused veterans" part, but the general vehemence against Moore.

So I asked him "Why?" and got a similar list/claims of misrepresentation, hypocrisy, etc. I said

"Sorry, I should have been more clear. Why Moore? Why are you so aware of his shortcomings that you are that forceful in expressing your dislike for the man? Who else are you that aware of? Who else do you fact check and rate for their accuracy and veracity that you can make as firm a statement about them as you just did about Moore? And what are your sources? How many people do you hold to the same standard?"

With some people this might have devolved into a shouting match, but this guy knew me for years and recognized when I was laying the groundwork for a point so he just asked what I was getting at. I can't say I remember exactly what i said, but it was along the lines of:

"It's not really about Moore. The guy isn't perfect, what a shocker! But why are you just short of snarling when you go into what's wrong with him? Are you like that with anyone else? There are plenty of people who slant things and misrepresent people as bad or worse than anything Moore has been accused of, but do you even know their names? Or be in a position to argue whether or not those claims are true?

"Or are you so aware of Moore because there's a lot of people who make it their business spread anything bad about him, whether it's real, exaggerated, or simply made up? You've seen Idiotic Fanboy Turf Wars, where people will hold a grudge forever over the stupidest things? Small slights, real or imagined? Welcome to the same thing in political drag! Made all the easier because he's easy to caricature. Add real political differences into the mix and it's easy as pie to have a daily Two-Minute Hate on him.

"So are you so firm in your opinion about Moore because you've researched all the claims (his and his critics) and have figured out which ones are true, which ones are partly true, which ones are a lot of hot air, and found him wanting far more than anyone else? Or is that just the buzz you're hearing and you haven't really looked into it yourself, or relied on someone with their own axe to grind?"

4. Personally, Ive never been a fan of Moore
He did somewhat misrepresent this guys views. I know the court didn't find anything wrong, but the guy had a point.

He also misrepresented a bank giving out guns. He made it seem like you open a checking account and they hand you a gun. Instead, you had to do all the background checks, and the bank denied numerous people even after passing the background check.

If you are going to act like you are making documentaries, then you need to be honest. He knew that he was misrepresenting the solider and the bank, but he continued to further his cause. If he would stop pretending that he is completely honest and not in it for the money, I wouldn't have a problem.

5. He implied no such thing about the bank
The point of that segment was to comment on the gun culture in the U.S., not to claim that the bank was circumventing background checks

6. I'm neither a fan nor a detractor...
...he has good and weak points, and to a certain extent I'll put up with the weaker points when he's otherwise able to push certain questions into the public space that usually get shut out.
