Photo of the Day (JAPAN)

Primary school children play in an indoor pool in the city of Fukushima on June 13, 2011, during what is likely to be their only swimming lesson of the year. With severe limits on students' outdoor activities imposed due to the Fukushima nuclear crisis, the city's 51 primary schools cannot use their outdoor pools and must share 11 indoor pools in and around Fukushima city. Local women and volunteer students from Ofunato Higashi High School pick this year's first harvest of tea leaves in Rikuzentakata, Iwate Prefecture, on June 13, 2011. The region is home to tea called "Kesen-cha" and is known as the northern limit for growing tea in Japan. Although the tea plantation escaped tsunami damage on March 11, it now overlooks the devastated sight of Hirota Bay, its breakwater and the once scenic pine groves of Takatamatsubara. "Since I moved into temporary housing, things are gradually getting settled. I really enjoy picking tea leaves as I'd thought we wouldn't be able to do it this year," said a 69-year-old woman. Students at the Kuwagasaki Elementary School in Miyako, Iwate Prefecture, perform the "Tairyo Iwaiuta" folk song and dance during the final sports festival at their school on June 11, 2011, ahead of the scheduled construction of temporary housing on the schoolyard for the victims of the March 11 Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami.
