Police In FL, WI, OH, NY Turning Away From GOP
Police flight from anti-worker GOP continues in Florida
MainStreet

<snip>

The Broward County Police Benevolent Association has been supporting Republican governors in Florida for the last 20 years. But that’s changing thanks to the disastrous first six months of the Rick Scott administration. The group is holding an event expressly for their members and others to send a message to the Florida Republican Party by switching their registration:

Next month the Broward County Police Benevolent Association is holding a “Party to Leave the Party” — an event coordinated with the Supervisor of Elections where police officers and the general public can switch their voter registrations from Republican to Democratic or Independent.

The reason for the switch? The association, which serves as the bargaining union for the county’s law enforcement officers, is unhappy with the leadership of Governor Rick Scott and the results of the past legislative session, including changes to the Florida Retirement System that will require the workers to pay more of their own wages into retirement savings.

The PBA is a union, but like many unions in Florida it is not necessarily supportive of Democrats. As Broward PBA President Patrick Hanrihan points out, Rick Scott and other Republicans had “no problem” taking money from the police union to fund the 2010 campaigns, and then they turned around and passed a “paycheck protection” bill that would preclude public unions from taking dues if they were involved in political campaigns. “The union dues-deduction bill is a flat-out union-busting bill,” said President Hanrihan.

The party-switching event is emblematic of a nationwide trend among traditionally conservative law enforcement groups turning against the Republican Party over labor issues.

In Wisconsin...

1. I sure as hell wish North Carolina would turn away. They seem to be turning TO the GOP.
And, believe me, it really sucks. This is the first time in over 100 years NC has a republican-controlled legislature. Luckily, we still have a Democratic governor who can veto their insane ideas, but she's not going to be governor next time around. Most every democrat I know hates her.

3. The Police has no problem supporting a criminal (Rick Scott)
It was only when Scott went after their benefits, they gave a damn. The police unions never gave a damn that Rick Scott stole $1.6 billion dollars from Medicare. Telling.

6. Based upon the questionable behavior in many departments
especially in Florida, I am finding it not possible to empathize with them.
