1. I'd help him pay it off
but how does one prove they've paid off $0.00?

4. Meanwhile, no one there will know how to deal with it and the computers will go initiate action.
Anyone who knew what they were doing were long ago fired.

I'd write a check for the amount and stand over a teller while it's entered.

7. When I lived in New Mexico a neighbor got a letter from tax
dept saying "you didn't pay income tax last year". Neighbor photocopied front and back of tax payment check showing it was paid on time and was deposited by state. State then tried to deposit photocopied front and back of check. When bank refused it, state wrote a letter threatening to arrest neighbor for sending a worthless check. True New Mexico story.

I never got a foreclosure notice, but I did get a bill from Citimortgage for $0.00 once. I paid it with a check for $0.00 and they had the nerve to write back saying they were unsure what my intent was.
