Daniel Ellsberg on "Last Word." Said "breaking into his doctor's office
to get information is now legal under the Patriot Act." Today is 40th anniversary of the release of the Pentagon Papers.

2. Did you hear the lead-in to that story on NPR?

It really cracked me up. They said, paraphrasing here, "today we're used to seeing government secrets exposed on the front pages of newspapers, but back in 1972 that was not the case..."

I about laughed my ass off. Our entire political establishment publicly supports abuses far more egregious than anything found in the Pentagon Papers, and our media is silent about it. Oh yeah, our media is just so much more penetrating today. :eyes:

3. Everything Nixon did to him would be legal.
Including assassinating him on the Capitol steps.

They can do it to you and me, too.

4. it's interesting to ponder -- did watergate actually have the effect of making it all legitimate?
you would think it would have made any president and administration think twice about doing anything illegal, knowing that forced resignation (to avoid impeachment and removal) is a real possibility.

instead, the lesson learned, at least from republicans, is to just do it bigger, bully outrageous laws through congress, ignore treaties, and perhaps most importantly, control the media better.

today nearly half the country, it seems, thinks that crap far worse than nixon ever did is not only ok, but patriotic.

there's some seriously sick shit happening to this country these days.
