Rep. Anthony Weiner's Nissan Pathfinder is unregistered, DMV says

Rep. Anthony Weiner has been having a pretty shitty month (deserved or not). Amid calls to resign, seeking treatment for his "issues," and being generally condemned by the New York City population, he's now been busted for driving around in an unregistered car! Some sharp-eyed individual was able to catch that the July 2007 registration sticker on Weiner's Nissan Pathfinder had expired, note that there was no visible inspection sticker -- and checked with the DMV, who confirmed that the license plate, which had actually been issued to another of Weiner's cars, had expired in 2006.
While the Daily News takes this fact and runs with it -- "Lying about sexting apparently isn't Rep. Anthony Weiner's only gray area" -- we are loath to equate the two misdeeds. Still, it's not good. Weiner -- man. We're just shaking our heads, here.

when it rain it pours, why wouldn't he just register his car?

3. Oh, ffs
He probably ripped the tag off his mattress, too, and perhaps he even used the pictures and accounts of a game without the express written consent of Major League Baseball.

And I hear it from a very highly placed source that, in 1989, he returned a VHS copy of "Ghostbusters II" to Blockbuster without rewinding it.

I demand more investigations!

And apparently he switched his plates out because the other ones didn't say CONGRESS on them. He's looking more and more like a common asshole who really gets off on being seen as powerful. I just find it all incredibly distasteful at this point.

No strong message can survive a messenger this weak. He needs to go.

I seriously doubt that many of the reps in DC handle their own day to day personal duties. They have assistants, secretaries or aids who do the majority of grunt work. Just like the vast majority of them don't read the bills that they put their names to.

Hell, even Chinese workers are technically in a Union. They're even governed from the top by "workers".

One of the German workers rep's (oh and they sit on the board of directors over there) just went to jail for bribes, whoring and whatnot.

Independent Unions are quite rare.

16. I hope this is a cautionary notice to all who are "vocal" advocates
Actually it's nothing new for foes to dig and dig and dig until they find something on their "enemies". The more vocal (and righteous) one is, the more and deeper they will dig.

The old canard about being as virtuous as Caesar's wife is true.

Virtuousness
http://www.thefreedictionary.com/virtuousness
like Caesar’s wife Of absolutely impeccable conduct; totally beyond reproach; without even the implication of impropriety. The phrase derives from an episode in the life of Julius Caesar as recounted in Plutarch’s Lives. The Roman nobleman Publius Clodius was on public trial for having had an affair with Pompeia, wife of Caesar. The latter testified that he knew nothing to substantiate the charges, and Publius Clodius was consequently acquitted. Caesar nevertheless divorced his wife Pompeia as a result of the scandal. When asked why he had done so when he had maintained her innocence, Caesar is reputed to have said, “I thought my wife ought not even to be under suspicion.” The more often heard version is the phrase Caesar’s wife must be above suspicion.

odor of sanctity The appearance of holiness or saintliness; an air of respectability; a virtuous, dignified exterior. This expression grew out of a belief popular in the Middle Ages that the dead bodies of saintly persons exuded a sweet smell. The pleasant odor was interpreted as a sign of the dead person’s sanctity or holiness.

There was also a sensation of aromatic odour, as of a dead body embalmed, for when the celestial angels are present, what is cadaverous then excites a sensation as of what is aromatic. (Cookworthy, tr., Swedenborg’s Heaven and Hell, 1756)

Today the phrase is usually used ironically to imply a disparity between appearance—such as that of an extravagant funeral—and a contrasting reality, such as the deceased’s private life. Here sanctity is closer to sanctimoniousness

Not sure about the answer to that one.

But there are serious problems if you have an accident with an unregistered vehicle. The vehicle cannot be insured if it's unregistered. And in this case the plates are likely illegal too.

But he could easily insure without regard to plate status, or even ownership for that matter.

60. Nope, that won't fly with me.
If I "forget," the company/government office continues to remind me until I remember. And after a certain amount of time, I get penalized with a "you forgot for too long" fee.

"I forgot" would work only if the plate expired recently...5 years falls outside my definition of recent.

45. I'm sure the fact that he illegally switched plates from his Honda that said US CONGRESS on them had
nothing to do with his apparently massive ego. :-(

40. That's as bizarre as the sexting.
How in the world is he driving in an unregistered car with illegal plates? That's crazy!

57. C'mon, why are you applying our rules here? The powerful and/or rich do as they like. Free!!
Stunning, the guy is actually making me angry - how very odd on such a normally trivial point.

But Years and Years! I can't even imagine trying that to save a measly few hundred dollars a year.

I'd be stopped, arrested and have my car towed ... Guaranteed.

domestic brand.

63. Penalties for driving unregistered vehicle: Fine + 15 days in jail. Uninsured: license revoked!
Edited on Mon Jun-13-11 03:00 PM by Renew Deal
<snip>
Later in section 401 of NYS law it notes that an unregistered car can be receive penalties of a fine of not less than $75 nor more than $300 or by imprisonment for not more than 15 days or both the fine and jail time. If the violation consists of failure to renew a registration which was valid within 60 days, the fine shall be not less than $40.

Driving without insurance is also illegal in New York and would come with its own separate fine and penalty then the portion of a ticket that is for being without proper registration on a vehicle.

NYS law requires you to surrender your vehicle plates to the NYSDMV before there is a lapse in your liability insurance. If you do not surrender your vehicle plates, the DMV will suspend your registration and driver's license.

If you are convicted of operating an uninsured motor vehicle or permitting another person to be operate your uninsured vehicle, your license will be revoked for at least one year. The same penalty applies if the Department of Motor Vehicles receives evidence that you were involved in an accident without being insured.
<snip>

And that's not even getting into using illegal plates.

84. He once had a strong voice, but no message can survive a messenger this weak.
After lying his ass off with the skill of a carnival barker to leadership, media, and his constituents - only a fool would trust him again.

That would make a sizable dent in the deficit.

80. A minor transgression in the scheme of things, but really--
is it that hard to register your vehicle? He must realize there's a whole industry built around building left wing mole hills into mountains. He seems incredibly sloppy.

And register it.

And not randomly tweet my erect penis to arbitrary women.

I never realized it, but I guess I'm some kind of political genius.
