Germaine Greer was branded a disgrace yesterday after claiming British troops would rape women while at war.

The feminist outraged military leaders after she suggested highly-disciplined UK ground forces might commit acts of appalling sexual brutality if deployed to Libya.

Her remarks were made on BBC1’s Question Time as the 72-year-old cast doubt on allegations that Colonel Gaddafi had given his soldiers Viagra and ordered mass rapes as a weapon against rebels.

She was speaking to counter the pro-war propaganda that Gadafi was handing out viagra to his troops to encourage them to rape. Like the first thing you think about before going into combat is taking your little blue pill.

She didn't claim that British troops would rape; she said that rape happens in war, and the troops of any side could do it, including British ones.

3. "All soldiers in certain circumstances will rape" is a pretty broad brush

4. I think the part of the sentence you left out makes it clear she's talking about groups of soldiers

‘I think in this case one of those legends is going to appear about the hated enemy,’ said the Australian women’s lib campaigner.

‘All soldiers in certain circumstances will rape regardless of whether they are ours or theirs or whoevers.’

Notice her sentence before is about 'the enemy' (after she had talked about an untrue allegation that (West) Pakistani soldiers had been order to rape during the Bangladeshi war for independence); and her whole speech has been about whether one side of the Libyan conflict really is systematically raping - which she doesn't believe.

I don't think there's an army in the world that can truthfully say "our soldiers never rape".

"ALL soldiers" - is about as bigoted and broad brushed as you can get

it means "British/American/Libyan/whoever", which I think is pretty true.
