Fragility
I was told yesterday that I would have one the most fragile kid in the public school system for the next three years. I am being entrusted with someone so delicate that they could be gone at any moment.

I am very scared to carry such a responsibility.

I am very scared for the student. Poor kid.

And I am very scared because I always love my students and there is so much potential for great pain.

Teachers today are not the teachers of yesterday. We carry new and different burdens. We are social workers, foster parents for 8 hours a day, we are nurses and secretaries and sometimes we are asked to do things that would scare the hell out of any sane person.

I have a feeling I am going to be a very nervous person for the next couple of years.

2. yet you get paid too much. you are just a babysitter and you get your summers off.
it disgusts me how people belittle what teachers do. they seem to think they could easily go do it themselves with no training. i certainly know i couldn't do it. and i am always in awe of those who do. especially with the pressures they are under all the time. thank you for all you do.

3. My dear Snoutport...
But don't you see?

They trust you.

I understand your nervousness now. But I think that your good sense will soon reassert itself, and you will grow calmer.

You will find the resources that you already possess inside you to help this kid.

Once more into the breach, dear friend!

Once more...

5. Lol..."Good Sense"!?! Peggy, I've NEVER been accused of good sense! I'm supposed to be the rebel!
I will have not one but TWO nurses in my room next year! So, I guess that I should relax a little but... Yikes.

7. Dear heart, I had one of a set of twins that had a paralyzing muscle
wasting disease and had to have feeding tubes, a personal aide trained in rescue and a side room to rest in. You can do it. Just treat them like anyone else. They yearn for that. Teach them and allow them to have that quiet place to rest or to work. Get a room set aside for them. Trust yourself. That child is a gift. Mine was. You will make it. PM me if you need to talk about this. I trust that you will be fine. Been there, done that.

RV, twenty-seven years teaching everybody.

14. "Fragile" can mean a lot of things
Hopefully for you, in this case, it doesn't mean "tinderbox." Rec.
