* 98 percent of the respondents do not support the division of Libya as a part of the political solution for the current conflict with the Gaddafi regime. Around 95 percent also don’t see any role for Gaddafi or his sons in a transitional period, and think it is impossible to implement any political reform in Libya if Gaddafi or one of his sons stays in power

* Around 96 percent of those polled, believe that the 17th of February revolution can consolidate the national unity of Libya and support the model of a democratic Libya based on a constitution which respects human rights

* Al-Qaeda has not played any role in the 17th of February revolution, say 94 percent of the Eastern Libyans, and 91 percent thinks it’s impossible for Al-Qaeda to play any political role in the new Libya

* The National Transitional Council is seen by 92 percent of those surveyed as “expressing the views and wishes of Libyans for change”

The above link is to an overview of why Obama's implementation of the NFZ and R2P is perfectly legal under the law. I will not post it entirely here, however, all objections come down to the misinformed position that Obama, by using forces in Libya, was invoking Article 43 of the United Nations. This is wrong. Obama invoked Article 42, which does not require congressional approval to implement. Proof of this is that Article 43 has http://www.un.org/en/sc/repertoire/actions.shtml#rel5">never been used.

It goes like this: The US law (Title 22, Chap. 7, Subchap. XIV § 287d) grants the President the right to invoke UN Article 42 http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/uscode22/usc_sec_22_00000287---d000-.html">without authorization, the War Powers Act (Title 50, Chap. 33 § 1541) grants the President permission to act without authorization under http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/50/1541–1548.html">"specific statutory authorization" which, by definition, is what 287d does. § 1543 of the War Powers Act requires the President to report to Congress, http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/plum-line/post/obama_explains_libya_mission_to_congress/2011/03/03/ABU9377_blog.html">which he did. One can argue all day and night about the legality of the War Powers Act, doesn't change the fact that under the law as it is written, the President acted within the law.

Mohammed Nabbous, killed by Gaddafi's forces while trying to report on the massacre in Benghazi

"I'm not afraid to die, I'm afraid to lose the battle" -Mohammed Nabbous, a month ago when all this began

I'm struggling to come up with something to say about this man. I was not aware of the Libyan uprising until I saw Mo's first report, begging for help, posted here on DU. I was stricken. Here was a man giving everything he had to explain a situation that clearly terrified him, I would not call him a coward in that moment, but you could see the fear in his eyes, and desperation in his voice. For 30 days Nabbous would spend many hours covering the uprising in Benghazi. For many nights I would go to sleep with the webcast of Benghazi live on my computer screen, looking to it occasionally to be sure it was still 'there.' Mo treated the chat room as if we were his friends, and in some way, we were. I never signed up to LiveStream to thank him for all his work and it seems somewhat shallow to do so now, given that I was a lurker for so long. Ever since I took over posting these threads "Libya Alhurra" has been linked as a source of information. It wasn't until last night, when I posted, and twitter posted on Mo's adventures out into Benghazi to try to determine the truth of the situation, that Mo's webchannel became a hit, over 2000 people were watching him stream live. This was curious to him because he'd done many reports like this in the past but he appeared somewhat bemused that the view count exploded as it did. Last night Mo became a star. This is a man who first started out with a webcast replete with fear and desperation finally overcoming that aspect of himself and losing that fear, to become someone who was a fighter for the resistance just as much as those who held the guns. Reporting on the front lines of Benghazi became his final act, and for that he should never, ever be forgotten. I'm so sorry Mo that I never got to know you better.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vAclhhHv43s&feature=player_ded">Arab Awakening: Libya: Through the Fire is a documentary about Mo's last days, please watch it.

Mo leaves behind a wife who is with child, she had http://blog.foreignpolicy.com/posts/2011/03/23/a_bright_voice_from_libyas_darkness">this to say about the No Fly Zone and R2P UN resolution:

We started this in a pure way, but he turned it bloody. Thousands of our men, women, and children have died. We just wanted our freedom, that's all we wanted, we didn't want power. Before, we could not do a single thing if it was not the way he wanted it. All we wanted was freedom. All we wanted was to be free. We have paid with our blood, with our families, with our men, and we're not going to give up. We are still going to do that no matter what it takes, but we need help. We want to do this ourselves, but we don't have the weapons, the technology, the things we need. I don't want anyone to say that Libya got liberated by anybody else. If NATO didn't start moving when they did, I assure you, I assure you, half of Benghazi if not more would have been killed. If they stop helping us, we are going to be all killed because he has no mercy anymore.

Turkey's prime minister says his country has offered Libya's leader Muammar Qaddafi guarantees in return for leaving Libya.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan said in an interview with NTV channel broadcast Friday they are still waiting to hear back. Qaddafi has previously vowed not to leave Libya.

Erdogan did not specify what those guarantees are and when the offer to Qaddafi was made.

The Turkish leader said that Qaddafi has no other option but to leave Libya. "We said we will help you leave for where ever you would like," he said.

TRIPOLI, Libya — Libyan rebels staged an armed uprising against Moammar Gaddafi in the western city of Zlitan on Friday, a rebel spokesman said, adding that 22 of their fighters had been killed.

The clashes, if confirmed, would mark the first significant rebel attempt to take control of a major city in western Libya since the early days of the uprising.

Zlitan lies just over 100 miles east of Tripoli and about 30 miles west of the besieged rebel-held city of Misurata. A Libyan government spokesman could not be reached for comment and there was no independent confirmation of the rebel claims.

“There is a battle around the main hospital in Zlitan as we speak,” said Mohamed Ali, a rebel spokesman from Misurata currently in the Qatari capital, Doha.

TRIPOLI, Libya—Civil war, more than two months of bombardment from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and international sanctions have battered Libya's economy.

But in one corner of Tripoli's labyrinthine covered bazaar, at an intersection known to merchants as Libya's Wall Street, business is booming. Currency and gold traders, who have operated from a dusty crossroad at the al-Mushir Souk for four decades, say activity has surged during the war as Libyans seeking to preserve assets buy foreign cash and precious metals in bulk, or seek to move savings overseas.

...

Clutching as many as four cellphones, the al-Mushir dealers, who spoke on condition of anonymity to avoid reprisals from Col. Moammar Gadhafi's regime, said many Libyans bring bundles of cash to the market, which they exchange for dollars, then hoard.

...

The biggest transfers, in some cases amounting to millions of dollars, have come from wealthy regime loyalists, in preparation to defect or to protect their assets, traders said.

Edited on Sat Jun-11-11 07:51 AM by joshcryer
http://www.juancole.com/2011/06/arab-spring-turns-deadly-again.html">Arab Spring Turns Deadly Again
In Libya, the people of Zlitan near Misrata rose up against Qaddafi’s forces, and heavy fighting ensued in the city. It is a key to opening Tripoli to an advance from the West, and so if it fell to the Free Libya forces, it would hasten the end of the war.

Also on Friday, Qaddafi brigades continued their attacks on the city of Misrata, killing over twenty persons with indiscriminate fire. Qaddafi brigades also bombarded Gadamis, in the southwest near Tunisia. The Free Libya forces are puzzled as to why NATO does not attack the forces besieging Misrata, and I share their puzzlement.

NATO has been intensively bombarding Tripoli, which may or may not actually be useful (no one seems to be explaining the rationale for these tactics), but Qaddafi forces appear to be able to roll around through the desert at will. My guess is that French and British air forces lack the precision capabilities of the American, and that there is still poor coordination between the Free Libya forces and their air protectors, which could lead to unfortunate friendly fire incidents, and NATO is being cautious.

Fancy hotels that dominate the skylines of several African capitals, farms, banks, gas stations, telephone companies and an international airline — the financial tentacles of Moammar Gadhafi's regime are far-reaching and little known across the continent.

They include the first pan-African communications satellite and the continent's only pan-African radio station.

And while a few countries say they have frozen those assets, in line with U.N. sanctions, many suspect that hundreds of millions of dollars are under the radar and could simply vanish in the disarray surrounding the Libyan revolution.

"We have billions and billions, who knows how many billions?" the deputy governor of the rebel-held Central Bank in Benghazi, Abdalgader Albagrmi, told The Associated Press.

When the people of the eastern city of Benghazi rose up against Colonel Gaddafi's rule, his son Saif was straight on Libyan state television, warning viewers that the uprising was the work of Libyans in the west who wanted to invade and steal the country's oil.

And when he spoke of "Libyans in the west", Saif Gaddafi included Manchester in his list.

He's right that there are thousands of Libyans in Manchester who hate the Gaddafi regime. The city is home to Britain's largest Libyan community. Almost every elder you meet fled Libya in the last 20 years, warned that they would be arrested or killed if they stayed, simply for calling for change.

They fled west in terror. But now they sense Gaddafi could finally be beaten; they're not afraid any more. And they are daring to go back - some to find family, others to help the rebels. Some to fight alongside them.

6. SYRIA: Jisr al-Shughour braces for all-out assault by government forces

AP has more on the situation in the besieged town of Jisr al-Shughour, which has been sealed off by tanks and thousands of Assad's forces.

One local resident said Syrian soldiers and police officers who deserted rather than fire on protesters were now involved in the defence of the town, which is expected to soon face an all-out assault by government forces.

An AP reporter, one of several journalists invited to accompany the northern push by Assad's troops, said they came under fire about a mile outside Jisr al-Shughour today.

The government forces blamed snipers stationed in nearby hills. No casualties were reported.

7. Gaddafi troops surrounding Zlitan, clashes continuing

In Libya, Pro-Gaddafi forces are surrounding the town of Zlitan, 160 km east of Tripoli, according to the rebels.

A rebel spokesman said clashes were continuing after anti-government forces seized control of some parts of the town.

"Zlitan is still surrounded by Gaddafi troops and they are threatening the residents to surrender or have their women raped by mercenaries," rebel spokesman Ahmed Bani said, althought it was not possible to independently verify his claim.

Zlitan is one of three towns that are largely government controlled between the rebel-held Misrata and the capital. Were it to fall, it could allow the anti-Gaddafi uprising to spread from Misrata, the biggest rebel outpost in western Libya, to Gaddafi's stronghold in Tripoli, Reuters reports.

The news agency said Gaddafi's forces also shelled the city of Gadamis for the first time overnight. The bombardment of the city, 600km (370 miles) southwest of Tripoli on the Tunisia and Algerian border, has opened up a new front in the five-month civil war.

8. Libya rebels, Gadhafi forces clash in western city (Zawiya)

Associated Press
By DIAA HADID and MAGGIE MICHAEL , 06.11.11, 09:49 AM EDT

ZAWIYA, Libya -- Rebels were battling forces loyal to Moammar Gadhafi along the Mediterranean coast west of Tripoli on Saturday, fighting their way back into the important western oil port of Zawiya.

...

A rebel fighter who fled Zawiya at the end of March said "there are clashes inside Zawiya itself."

The rebel, who identified himself only as Kamal, said "the fighters are back in the city" and that he had spoken with them.

...

"The situation is very bad (in Zlitan). Gadhafi sent huge forces to Zlitan to fortify the city because he knows that if Zlitan falls in the hands of the rebels, the way to Tripoli will be wide open," Abdel-Salam said. "Now the ball is in the court of NATO, but we have not seen any NATO planes flying over despite the fierce battle."

10. Gaddafi forces attack rebels in western Libyan cities
Source: Monsters and Critics

Jun 11, 2011, 13:42 GMT

Cairo/Tripoli - Forces loyal to Libyan leader Moamer Gaddaffi launched another attack against rebels in the western cities on Saturday, the rebels said.

...

Protests against Gaddafi, who has been in power for 42 years, began in mid-February, but soon turned into an armed conflict following a lethal government crackdown on demonstrators.

Gaddafi's forces have been trying to enter the city and stop the rebels in Misurata from advancing on the town of Zlitan.

...

Shelling by government forces on Kekklah town, in the western Nafusa Mountain area, resulted in the destruction of al-Manarah mosque which was recently built.

Opposition groups reported online that Gadaffi forces that (were) defeated in the nearby al-Galaa town, joined with those attacking Kekklah.

11. Gaddafi forces shell world heritage-listed city of Gadamis on Tunisia/Algeria border

Gaddafi's forces also shelled for the first time the world heritage-listed city of Gadamis, 600 km southwest of Tripoli on the Tunisia and Algerian border, overnight, opening a new front in the four-month civil war.

Rebels said the oasis town, with a population of about 7,000 people, mainly Berber, was under attack after an anti-government protest in the old Roman city on Wednesday.

"Gadamis is being shelled by Gaddafi forces, according to witnesses in the town," spokesman Juma Ibrahim said from the rebel-held town of Zintan in the Western Mountains. "This is a retaliation for anti-regime protests."

The old town was de-populated by Gaddafi in the 1990s and its inhabitants moved into modern buildings. It was not clear if the attack hit the old town, a labyrinth of narrow, underground passages and houses known as the "Pearl of the Desert". The accounts from Gadamis could not be independently verified and the government did not comment.

13. Rebel gains spark battle for west of Libya
Source: The Telegraph

A renewed battle for the west of Libya could end the month-long stalemate in the struggle between Colonel Gaddafi's ugly regime and the rebels fighting for control.

By Nick Meo in Tripoli
9:00PM BST 11 Jun 2011

In the Jebel Nafusa mountains southwest of Tripoli, lightly-armed mountain farmers drove Gaddafi forces out of a string of villages - some of which had refused bribes to support the Libyan leader - forcing them to retreat to within 60 miles of the capital.

In Misurata, emboldened rebels prepared to break out of the enclave where they had been besieged for weeks by launching a series of probing attacks on Zlitan, the next town to their west.

On Saturday, in a move that startled the government, rebel forces began an assault on the oil port of Zawiya, halfway between the Tunisian border and the capital - leading to the first major fighting in the city since opposition forces there were crushed by Gaddafi troops in March.

The coastal road towards Zawiya from the capital was blocked by soldiers and loyalist gunmen with assault rifles, rushing to prevent the rebels from pushing further east.

There were rumours that government forces were preparing their own onslaught on the rebel-held border town of Wazin, and Gaddafi troops continued to bombard Misurata in an effort to throttle the rebel breakout, killing 31 in a single day on Friday.

14. Correction: Libya media battle story

By Associated Press, Updated: Saturday, June 11, 9:53 AM

BENGHAZI, Libya — In a story May 31 about the Libyan rebels’ first homegrown rebel satellite television station, The Associated Press reported erroneously that Libya Alhurra TV is an extension of the Internet video streaming site http://www.livestream.com/libya17feb. The Internet site is a separate entity from the TV station. The story also reported that Libyan businessman Mohammed al-Nabbous was shot as he was filming video. Al-Nabbous was killed as he was broadcasting a live audio feed.

US probes Goldman over Libya bribe
Sat Jun 11, 2011 4:40PM

US regulators are examining whether some Wall Street firms, including Goldman Sachs Group Inc, have violated bribery laws in dealings with Libya's sovereign wealth fund.

Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) enforcement lawyers believe some Wall Street firms may have had a dishonest relation with the Libyan Investment Authority controlled by Muammar Gaddafi, The Wall Street Journal reported.

The regulators are especially looking into a USD 50 million fee Goldman initially agreed to pay to the Libyan sovereign wealth fund as part of a proposal made to help the fund recoup losses.

The payment was, however, not made due to the popular uprising against Gaddafi. But this does not exempt the institution from the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, which bans US firms from both offering and paying bribes to foreign government officials or any employees of foreign state-owned companies.

Senior Gaddafi aide wounded in NATO strike-rebels
BENGHAZI, Libya | Sat Jun 11, 2011 9:14pm BST

(Reuters) - A Libyan rebel military spokesman said a senior aide to leader Muammar Gaddafi was wounded on Saturday in a NATO air strike on a city near Tripoli and was being treated in hospital.

There was no immediate confirmation that NATO air strikes had taken place near the capital on Saturday evening, or that any Gaddafi aide had been wounded.

However, several explosions were heard in Tripoli itself throughout the afternoon, as late as 8 p.m. (1800 GMT), suggesting NATO was ramping up attacks after a quiet morning.

Spokesman Ahmed Bani said the aide, who he named as El-Khouwildy el-Ahmeildy, was a member of Gaddafi's Council of the Leaders of the Revolution and that his daughter was married to one of Gaddafi's sons.

The Free Generation Movement - حركة جيل الاحرار ‎-----------------------------------------------------

1- Morale is high in the city with news that Alzawiyah is resisting.
2- Groups around Tripoli are continuing preparations for what appears to be the ever closer final phase - The Tripoli ...Chapter.
3- Army officer, and member of FGM, has informed us of the bombing of mobile radar units in Metiga. A nearby tent was untouched and the ground beneath the radars were barely scarred. Such is the incredible accuracy of the munitions being used.
4- In response to Alzawiyah, heavy checkpoints have been placed on the west of the capital. The coastal road has been closed.
5- 2 doctors have been arrested in response to a member of staff passing a note to a journalist revealing the baby being paraded as a NATO victim was actually an RTA victim.
6- FGM members witnesses, first hand, an armed freedom fighter engaging Katiba forces in the AbuSita district. Katiba forces were slow and frantic in their response, demonstrating how ill prepared and how poorly trained they are. It is largely estimated in Tripoli that 60% of armed forces loyal to the illegitimate regime will disappear when freedom fighters definitively engage the capital in the final push to Bab Alazaziyah.
7- Regime men have been witnessed in Jamhuriya Street smashing windows of buildings adjacent to NATO bomb sites in an attempt to mimic collateral damage prior to the arrival of the media.

#Sabha breaking Free...#Libya #Sabha....Breaking News: Sabha breaking free from Gaddafi grip
National Transitional Council (NTC) representatives have confirmed that Sabha is breaking free from the Gaddafi regime's grip and provided the following details:
Friday 10 June
1 - Widespread demonstrations were held in the Mansheya area by youth identifying themselves as 17th of February. Demonstrators raised the independence flag and chanted against Gaddafi and called for the downfall of the regime. Gaddafi troops, some disguised in civilian clothing, responded by firing live rounds at the demonstrators. Two demonstrators were shot and were transported to the March 2nd Hospital, before being kidnapped by Gaddafi troops.
2 – Fighters belonging to the Awlad Suleiman tribe managed to liberate a number of streets, most notably Mansheya Main Street, Alnamlah street, and the area known as Dar Al Muammar. The vegetable market street and 606 street were also liberated and the flag of independence was raised there.
3 - Masood Abdul Hafeez, a Gaddafi General, met with Awlad Suleiman tribal elders and tried to bribe them to meet their demands. However, the proposals were unanimously rejected in favour of Gaddafi's departure.

Saturday, June 11
Widespread demonstrations occurred this morning in Gamal Abdel Nasser street, which extends from the New neighborhood to the military hospital, a total distance of 5 km. The demonstrators demanded Gaddafi’s departure and raised the independence flag. Again they were met with gunfire. One demonstrator, Nather Al Sunni, was killed near the area known as Miammar’s house.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2011/jun/12/misrata-gaddafi-libya-nato">Misrata: One day in Libya's rebel stronghold where calm gives way to chaos
The sun is shining in Misrata on Friday morning, and in Tripoli Street they're selling souvenirs. On a trestle table, little flags, buttons and hats emblazoned in the Libyan tricolour – red, black and green – provide an island of brightness in the blasted grey landscape of pulverised buildings and wrecked tanks that is now downtown Misrata. "We're a business-minded city," says Ali, a slim young trader in a long brown robe.

Indeed they are. With the enemy now pushed back beyond artillery range, this battered city is shaking itself back to life. Squads of boys too young to fight are out tidying the streets, painting white lines along the highways and manufacturing souvenirs.

Ali's stand, a trestle table, is crowded with key fobs, T-shirts and hats, all in the official colours – the ancient Libyan tricolour which had replaced the despised plain green flag of the Gaddafi regime.

Shops are open and sell a bizarre array of goods: fresh fruit is rare, but there is HP sauce, After Eights and Cornettos. With 11,000 tonnes of grain in the elevator nobody goes hungry and there are no humanitarian aid workers here because, fighting apart, there is no humanitarian crisis.

19. In Libya, sustained fighting renewed near capital

The battles in a strategic port and refinery city mark the latest blow for Moammar Kadafi's regime. New explosions rock Tripoli as intensified NATO raids continue.

By Patrick J. McDonnell, Los Angeles Times
June 12, 2011

Reporting from Tripoli, Libya—

Rebels and forces loyal to Moammar Kadafi were battling near a strategic port and refinery city in western Libya on Saturday, forcing the closure of a crucial highway linking Tripoli with the Tunisian border, the government said.

...

The renewed unrest marks the latest blow for a regime already holding off rebel forces on several fronts and suffering daily bombing raids from a NATO-led alliance that includes the United States. New explosions rocked the capital Saturday, the latest in an intensified series of raids on Tripoli.

Rebels seized control of swaths of Zawiya and were engaged in a fierce battle with government troops, said Shamsiddin Abdulmolah, a rebel spokesman in Benghazi, the opposition stronghold in eastern Libya.

...

But the guerrillas' ability to cut off the coastal highway would appear to pose a new strategic challenge for Kadafi's government.

...

A NATO spokesman, Wing Commander Mike Bracken, confirmed Friday that rebels had secured control of much of the Berber highland zone southwest of Tripoli, including the cities of Zintan and Yafran, the latter about 70 miles from the capital.

Gaddafi forces surround Zlitan, threaten rape
Forces loyal to Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi on Friday surrounded Zlitan, one of only three towns separating the rebel-held city of Misrata from the capital Tripoli, a revolution military spokesman said.

“Large numbers of troops are surrounding Zlitan from all directions and are threatening its residents with having their women raped by mercenaries if they do not surrender,” Ahmed Bani, military spokesman, told Reuters by phone from Benghazi.

5- 2 doctors have been arrested in response to a member of staff passing a note to a journalist revealing the baby being paraded as a NATO victim was actually an RTA victim.

7- Regime men have been witnessed in Jamhuriya Street smashing windows of buildings adjacent to NATO bomb sites in an attempt to mimic collateral damage prior to the arrival of the media.

Additional comments by FunGuerillaz:

Concerning my critique of NATO: Please note that I as everybody else am very grateful to NATO for what they did. But sometimes, they can be slow to act and what’s worse, I think some of their strategy is flawed. They think pounding Tripoli will make the regime crumble and cause an uprising there.

I shared this view but it turned out to be wrong; NATO thankfully is very mindful of what they target. They only hit military armour, ammunition and buildings but no civilian infrastructure nor even soldiers if it can be avoided. I applaud that; it’s a first in warfare.

24. Libya conflict spreads to key oasis city: rebels

by Jean-Pierre Campagne – 23 mins ago

BENGHAZI, Libya (AFP) – Tribal fighters opposed to Moamer Kadhafi have clashed with the strongman's forces in the oasis city of Sabha, rebels said, as regime troops went on the offensive at key Libyan flashpoints.

...

Fighters of the Awlad Suleiman tribe, a rival to the Kadhafis, "liberated several streets" in Sabha, 800 kilometres (500 miles) south of Tripoli and a bastion of support for Kadhafi, the rebel National Transitional Council said on Saturday.

Kadhafi's forces opened fire, killing one man, the NTC said in a statement.

Sabha, with a population of some 100,000 people and home to an important military base, had until now been untouched by the unrest which has swept much of the north African oil-rich nation since a popular uprising against Kadhafi's four-decade authoritarian rule erupted mid-February.

Libya unrest leaves mental scars
Children most at risk as they witness deaths and live in fear of violence.
Last Modified: 12 Jun 2011 06:55

Since the uprising began in Libya in February, hundreds of people have been killed and injured.

But it is not just the physical trauma affecting Libyans.

As Al Jazeera's Tony Birtley reports from Misurata, the unrest is leaving psychological scars on its younger population.

Al Jazeera's James Bays reports from the frontline in Libya: "About two hours ago, the opposition started an offensive to takea town, which is in the middle of road that goes from Zintan to Yafran.

"Opposition wanted to remove Gaddafi troops - they started from both sides.

"They pretty much had Gaddafi troops cornered, but the Gaddafi troops have heavy weapons.

"We were in a trench earlier, which we thought was a safe position. But then we saw Gaddafi troops coming towards us so we had to leave. "

The last report was probably about Rayayna and recent tweets report the town has finally been liberated. It's been used as a staging area, refuge, and source of shelling for months.

29. Libyan rebels battle for key oil port near Tripoli
Source: Washington Post

By Ernesto Londono, Published: June 11

ZAWIYAH, Libya — Libyan rebels launched a surprise attack Saturday seeking to retake a key oil port 27 miles west of Tripoli on the road that has become the beleaguered
capital’s main lifeline.

Government forces appeared to have been caught off guard as the rebels opened fire on troops loyal to Moammar Gaddafi near the city of Zawiyah, which is still recovering from shelling that government forces unleashed there in March to crush a rebel uprising.

...

Saturday’s battles were the closest to the capital in months and raised the prospect that the government’s grip on the coastal road that leads to the Tunisian border could be slipping. If the rebels were to seize control of Zawiyah and nearby towns in coming days, they could cut off already-scant supplies of fuel and food. Gaddafi has come to rely heavily on the two-lane road because a NATO-imposed no-fly zone, near-daily airstrikes on military targets in Tripoli and a naval blockade have left the capital largely isolated.

“I think we’re headed for the finale — the implosion of Tripoli,” Gamaty said.

30. Nicholas Kristof, New York Times columnist, looks at the seeds of Arab Spring
Source: The Oregonian

Published: Saturday, June 11, 2011, 10:00 AM Updated: Saturday, June 11, 2011, 11:37 AM

By David Stabler, The Oregonian

Nicholas D. Kristof has lived on four continents, traveled to 140 countries and won two Pulitzer prizes as a reporter and columnist for The New York Times. The globe-trotting journalist has always had a deep interest in China, but he has also reported extensively about genocide in Darfur, rape in Congo, human trafficking, women's rights, poverty and health issues.

...

Op-ed columns tend to fall into one of two categories -- those that stir the pot with personal opinions and those that rely more on news reporting. Kristof is an on-the-ground reporter who has traveled to Darfur 10 times. He has visited 21 of the world's 22 Arab countries. On Wednesday he travels to Mauritania, the last Arab country on his list. Since the Arab Spring began, he has traveled to the Middle East three times, including one trip in early February with two of his three children, then ages 16 and 13.

...

What larger events led to an Arab Spring now?

It's really hard to find a trigger for why it happened in 2011 as opposed to 2008 or 2005, but I think pressures were building in a lot of respects. The Arab world had been largely left behind by the wave of more representative governments that's happening all over the world. When you have a larger middle class, more educated people and more international contacts, that creates pressure for change that is amplified by the social media. There's just a deep frustration with corruption, with thuggish governments, with repression -- and so, little Tunisia started these dominoes. We still don't know how many dominoes are going to fall, but revolution has always been contagious. We're seeing that this year. At end of day, it will succeed in some countries and fail in others. No doubt, there will be real change. That genie is not going back in the bottle.

What do you see as America's role in this time of transition?

One is that we have often ended up allied with the powers that be, which inevitably tend to be powers of the past, and it's important we be nimble enough that we stand with nations and not with dictators of those nations. I think our role will vary hugely by country. In Libya, we're playing a central role. In other countries, it's going to be aid. In Yemen, it's a certain amount of bombing of extremists. One of the strengths of the Arab Spring is that it's indigenous, homegrown. I think that is something to encourage. I think we have to be careful not to be too heavy-handed and to let local people feel that they're in the driver's seat, but that's hard to do. And there are all kinds of conflicting demands on what we should do. With the Saudi government, we have been somewhat reluctant to come out for change. In Saudi Arabia, I think we're naive.

32. Second day of fighting near Libya's capital

By Nick Carey

TRIPOLI | Sun Jun 12, 2011 8:47am EDT

TRIPOLI (Reuters) - Rebels fought forces loyal to Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi for a second day in the town of Zawiyah on Sunday, bringing the revolt against his rule to within a few kilometers (miles) of the capital.

A rebel spokesman in the town said 13 rebel fighters and civilians were killed in fighting there on Saturday, and the main road to neighboring Tunisia -- a supply line that has kept the country running despite sanctions -- was shut.

...

"Fierce fighting is taking place now. The (pro-Gaddafi) brigades have been receiving reinforcements ... There are many snipers on rooftops of buildings and mosques. They are the main threat to the residents," he said.

"The coastal road linking Tripoli to Tunisia is closed. The brigades are in control of the eastern side of the road while the revolutionaries control the western side.

"There were 13 martyrs, including a 7-year old boy, from fighting yesterday."

Libya crisis: 'Morale high' among Misrata rebels

11 June 2011 Last updated at 13:05 ET

A renewed barrage of shelling by Libyan troops around Misrata on Friday has left at least 22 people dead and at least 60 wounded, according to doctors in the rebel-held city.

The BBC's David Loyn visited a hospital in Misrata on Saturday and said that morale was high among the injured fighters, who are increasing in confidence as they push forward against Col Gaddafi's forces.

In verse and prose, Benghazi liberates speech
Source: AFP

BENGHAZI, Libya — Freedom of speech is the name of the game in Revolution Square in the Libyan rebel capital of Benghazi, where new publications have blossomed and women recite poetry in public.

“When the revolution started, I had three choices: become a soldier, or a journalist, or stay at home and sleep,” said Abdallah, brimming with enthusiasm. “I’m a journalist!”

With the insurgency against Libyan strongman Moammar Gadhafi came free speech in a country stifled by 42 years of dictatorship.

Dozens of young Libyans like Abdallah, of both sexes, have since turned to journalism or poetry.

41. Rebels: Confiscated document details Gadhafi's Misrata plans

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

• The document was confiscated a month ago from Gadhafi forces, rebels say

• A rebel spokesman says some details in it have been exaggerated

• The authenticity of the "battle plan" can't be confirmed

By the CNN Wire Staff
June 12, 2011 -- Updated 1505 GMT (2305 HKT)

Misrata, Libya (CNN) -- Rebels in the besieged Libyan city of Misrata on Sunday released a document they claim is a battle plan confiscated last month from forces loyal to longtime Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi.

CNN obtained the 15-page document -- titled, in part: "Battle plan to cleanse the city of Misrata from militant gangs" from rebels in the city Sunday. The words "top secret" is written at the top of every page. The name of Gadhafi's son, Khamis Moammar Gadhafi, appears on page 10 as commander of the theater.

...

The documents says Misrata is to be "attacked from six different directions with 11,350 fighters, 4,000 of whom are organized troops, (the rest volunteers). The six directions cover the east and the south."

The "mission" is stated as: "To destroy mercenary elements and deceive youth in Misrata using nine brigades. ..."

43. U.S. Underwrites Internet Detour Around Censors
Source: New York Times

By JAMES GLANZ and JOHN MARKOFF
Published: June 12, 2011

The Obama administration is leading a global effort to deploy “shadow” Internet and mobile phone systems that dissidents can use to undermine repressive governments that seek to silence them by censoring or shutting down telecommunications networks.

The effort includes secretive projects to create independent cellphone networks inside foreign countries, as well as one operation out of a spy novel in a fifth-floor shop on L Street in Washington, where a group of young entrepreneurs who look as if they could be in a garage band are fitting deceptively innocent-looking hardware into a prototype “Internet in a suitcase.”

Financed with a $2 million State Department grant, the suitcase could be secreted across a border and quickly set up to allow wireless communication over a wide area with a link to the global Internet.

...

The State Department, for example, is financing the creation of stealth wireless networks that would enable activists to communicate outside the reach of governments in countries like Iran, Syria and Libya, according to participants in the projects.

...

In a chat with a Times reporter via Facebook, Malik Ibrahim Sahad, the son of Libyan dissidents who largely grew up in suburban Virginia, said he was tapping into the Internet using a commercial satellite connection in Benghazi. “Internet is in dire need here. The people are cut off in that respect,” wrote Mr. Sahad, who had never been to Libya before the uprising and is now working in support of rebel authorities. Even so, he said, “I don’t think this revolution could have taken place without the existence of the World Wide Web.”

Great day for the liberation of Libya. The Libyan army is now attacking Qadhaffi's gangs on four different fronts: between Zintan and Yefren, at Brega, at Zliten and at Az-Zawiya. Meanwhile, Sabha joined the revolution. The brillance of it is: none of these attacks have to succeed, but many will.

On the other hand, Qadhaffi cannot afford to lose on any front, with the exception of the Nafusa. If he loses Zliten, it will become obvious that the front west of Misrata is not a stalemate but moving towards Tripoli. That will hurt the morale of his troops yet further. If he loses Az-Zawiya he loses his only source of fuel, as well as having his enemies only 40 km from his bunker. If he loses Brega, the transitional government can cash in on oil revenues.

From Zawiyat Albagoul via AJA via Mhalwes tweets:

Freedom fighters describe today as the final battle to protect Zintan, Yefren and Qalaa from the random shelling
If they succeed in liberating Ryayna & ZAlbagoul thn Gheryan is the only remaining city now tht Kikla is under FF too
Freedom fighters have all sorts of weapons nd today is the first time I see them using Tanks & heavy artillery
There are more plans and missions but I was asked not to reveal them. "

51. UAE recognises Libya rebels, to open Benghazi office

Sun Jun 12, 2011 8:06pm GMT

DUBAI, June 12 (Reuters) - The United Arab Emirates said on Sunday it had recognised Libyan rebels as the sole legitimate representative of the Libyan people, the state news agency reported, becoming the second Arab state to take such a move.

"This recognition affirms that the UAE is committed to maintaining strong ties with the Libyan people," Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahayan said in a statement carried on WAM.

"Based on this, UAE's dealing with the (rebel) Transitional National Council will take the form of a government-to-government relationship in all issues related to Libya."

He said the UAE will open a representative office soon in Benghazi, the east Libyan city where rebels fighting the government of veteran leader Muammar Gaddafi are based.

The annoucement came during a visit to the UAE by rebel council head Mustafa Abdul-Jalil.

56. Zawiyah's heart a ghost town after rebel advance

Sun Jun 12, 2011 10:57pm GMT

By Nick Carey

ZAWIYAH, Libya, June 12 (Reuters) - For a city that the Libyan government has said is under no real threat from rebels, the centre of Zawiyah was eerily quiet on Sunday.

...

On a first run through Zawiyah, government minders with a police escort did not stop or slow down. They drove around the centre before heading straight back east toward Tripoli.

...

Not far east, people could be seen moving around, but the heart of Zawiyah was as quiet as the grave. Quiet enough for the journalists to make out three gun shots not far to the west. The convoy went no further west.

Two old men on a bench were quickly approached by government minders when a Reuters reporter ventured in their direction. At almost the same moment the signal was given that it was time for the group to leave the city.

Source: Global Times (20:53 June 12 2011)
By Lin Meilian in Benghazi

Despite continued fighting on the outskirts of this "liberated" city, a sense of normalcy is returning as people go to work, go shopping, go for dinner and unlike before go out to buy their choice of newspaper.

The global "big-picture" of Benghazi is a city of audacious people at the center of a three-month-long uprising aimed at toppling Gaddafi who remains in power just 405 miles away in Libya's capital Tripoli.

The on-the-street reality of Benghazi is a city that has already undergone a broad social transformation. Perhaps most evident is the proliferation of publications that have released fresh new voices that have long been gagged.

Prior to the outbreak of fighting there was only one newspaper in Benghazi. Today about 50 new newspapers and magazines are being hawked on the streets.

59. To Ease Allies' Fears, Rebels Attempt to Rein In Militias
Source: Wall Street Journal

JUNE 13, 2011
By SAM DAGHER

...

One of the rebel units that has begun the evolution from ragtag force to professional militia is the Martyrs of the Feb. 17 Revolution Brigade. After the rebels' chaotic advance westward from Benghazi, the brigade's commanders started remaking their force.

Since then, with better organization and links to top figures in the rebels' governing council, the Feb. 17 Martyrs' group has benefited from substantial foreign backing. Its leaders, including a petroleum engineer and a computer retailer with no military background, say they aim to gain the trust and military support of countries involved in the effort to oust Col. Gadhafi and to secure a pivotal role in the post-Gadhafi period.

"I treated it like a project," says the brigade's commander, Fawzi Bukatef. Mr. Bukatef, who is in his 50s, was director of projects at the Benghazi-based Arabian Gulf Oil Co. before the uprising. When he was younger, he was imprisoned by the Gadhafi regime for 18 years, mostly in the notorious Abu Salim jail in Tripoli, for organizing an opposition group.

Mr. Bukatef appears to relish his new role, sporting a combat uniform during a graduation ceremony last month for nearly a thousand cadets from military schools in Benghazi, and joking that the men, who are joining the rebels, would eventually come under his command.

60. Reuters: WRAPUP 1-Battle for Libya oil town, fighting near Tripoli
Sun Jun 12, 2011 10:55pm EDT

• At least four fighters killed, rebels say

• Rebels say were outnumbered

• Contested town near Tripoli eerily quiet

By Maria Golovnina and Nick Carey

BENGHAZI/ZAWIYAH, Libya, June 13 (Reuters) - Rebels fighting against Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi say they were repulsed by his forces in a battle to retake the eastern oil town of Brega, suffering at least four dead.

In the west, rebels said they were fighting Gaddafi's forces for a second day in the town of Zawiyah on Sunday, bringing the revolt against his rule closer to the capital.

The rebels said they had lost at least four killed in fighting between Brega and Ajdabiyah. At least 65 fighters were wounded, doctors at the hospital in the rebel stronghold city of Benghazi said.

"We attacked them first but they attacked us back. We tried to get to Brega but that was difficult," Haithan Elgwei, a rebel fighter, said after returning from the front with the wounded.

...

"We will not retreat. We look forward to taking Tripoli," he added.

61. Libyan Leaders Defiant as Battle Rages at Oil City
Source: New York Times

By JOHN F. BURNS
Published: June 12, 2011

TRIPOLI, Libya — With loyalist forces clashing for a second day with rebels around a strategic oil city less than 30 miles west of here, the government of Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi on Sunday told the “ugly, evil forces of NATO” to accept that the rebel cause was doomed and that the Libyan leader would not be driven from power by rebel attacks or NATO airstrikes.

The fighting around the oil city, Zawiya, site of the refinery that is the Qaddafi government’s last remaining source of fuel, came as new battles raged over the weekend at three points that are part of the strategic defenses of Tripoli: in the east, near Misurata, 130 miles from the capital; in the south, at Zintan, about 125 miles from Tripoli, the capital; and, potentially most threatening, at Zawiya, which commands the coastal road that carries vital supplies of food to Tripoli from Tunisia.

...

Rebel accounts offered a different view. Rebel spokesmen at Misurata, a port city considered a linchpin of the wider war, acknowledged that rebel forces had taken new casualties in fighting there, with six rebels dead, but that rebel losses, amounting to several dozen killed in recent days, had resulted from a push to gain ground in a rural area, al-Darniya, west of the city.

The rebels said the attacks at Zawiya, which led briefly to the closing of the coastal road between Tripoli and the Tunisian border, were the product of a rebel push northward from the Nafusah mountains, with rebel fighters joining elements of the armed underground in Zawiya, and not the result of government advances.

62. Qaddafi writes a plea to Congress- June 10
http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0611/56712.html
W hat appears to be a letter from Muammar Qadhafi to members of Congress, the Libyan leader calls on the United States to take the lead in negotiating a cease-fire, while flattering Congress for its “thoughtful discussion of the issues” on Libya.

Qadhafi appeals to the United States “as the great Democracy, to assist us to determine our future as a people” in the letter and promises to implement reforms if he has the support of Americans behind him. It’s his hope, he says, to “exercise power through a direct democracy which will choose the senior officials who will provide the administration of the Libyan government and take care of its own affairs.”
Sent to congressional leaders and the White House, the three-page letter comes as reports continue to emerge, suggesting that Qadhafi is looking for a way to end the fighting in Libya and as NATO looks for ways to scale back its activity there, which began in March. In the letter, he asks for “a cease-fire, the funding of humanitarian relief and assistance in fostering and furthering accommodation between the parties within Libya that are at odds.”

In exchange, Qadhafi promises that he’ll allow a congressional fact-finding team into the country to examine humanitarian conditions and to “observe the true democratic sincerity of all Libya men and woman (sic).” The team would also be able to investigate “claims that have been made about systematic violations inside Libya during this tragic civil war.”

Bullshit. He had his chance to shape up back in 2003 when he gave up his chemical weapons program after Bushturd invaded Iraq.
We've been patient with this guy for 9 damn years. I say burn the damn letter on the Capitol hill steps.

I didn't trust him to behave after Lockerbie and certainly not after the Iraq invasion. Why should we trust him now?

65. Canadian directing the war in Libya calls it ‘a knife-fight in a phone booth'

PAUL KORING
ALLIED JOINT FORCES COMMAND, NAPLES, ITALY— From Monday's Globe and Mail

Published Monday, Jun. 13, 2011 12:01AM EDT
Last updated Monday, Jun. 13, 2011 1:35AM EDT

...

In charge of it all is Gen. – “call me Charlie”– Bouchard. He is funny and modest about his role, yet is unquestionably in command of this 86-day-old war.

...

Still, the general personally signs off on every last preselected target. It’s not just attention to detail, it’s a visceral sense of personal accountability. Gen. Bouchard may be determined but he is hardly gung-ho. He’s careful, deliberate and worries deeply about how to apply the big hammer of air power in the small circumstances of a brutal dictator clinging to power by indiscriminately killing and terrorizing his own citizens.

“I must meet rules, the mandate, the political guidance,” but, he adds, and grows quietly pensive, “I look at every target … at the end of the day it’s a judgment call … and I’m accountable, I’m accountable to Canada, I’m accountable to NATO, and more importantly I’m accountable to myself,” he says. Make the wrong call and the wrong people, or maybe too many people, die. And, Gen. Bouchard adds: “I want those who know me best to be able to look at me and say, ‘you did the right thing.’”

There’s an intensely personal aspect to target selection when the imagery is so good you can see children playing.

So even after the target list gets culled by half-a-dozen layers of political and military experts, Gen. Bouchard looks over the finished daily product. Some times he scrubs one off the list – too close, too risky, too much danger of killing civilians.

Free-ranging warplanes looking for targets of opportunity – say a tank in the open – face equally strict rules. If there are people nearby, it can’t be hit.

...

“It’s a knife-fight in a phone booth,” Gen. Bouchard says of the vicious violence at close quarters pitting Gadhafi loyalists and mercenaries against a rag-tag rebel army, ill-trained and ill-equipped.

66. AFM (Armed Forces of Malta) intercept boat from Libya
Source: Times of Malta

Monday, June 13, 2011

The armed forces yesterday intercepted a boat from Libya in Maltese territorial waters in an incident that remained unexplained last night.

Two AFM patrol boats were seen alongside the vessel about one kilometre off Delimara in the evening and a dinghy was at one point seen circling it. Witnesses described it as looking like a tugboat. Sources said the AFM boarded the vessel to establish who it was carrying and why it had headed for Malta.

...

The dinghy was later seen leaving the vessel and a patrol boat also left the scene heading in the dirction of the Freeport. But the mysterious boat remained stationery out at sea accompanied by the other patrol boat.

...

According to other sources, it had set out from Tripoli but none of this information could be verified last night. Neither the AFM nor the police released any details about the incident before The Times went to press.

67. Clinton to press African Union on Libya
Source: Reuters

Mon Jun 13, 2011 8:26am GMT

• Clinton to press Africans on Gaddafi's future

• First AU speech by a U.S. secretary of state

• Rising tensions in Sudan also on Clinton's agenda

By Andrew Quinn

DAR ES SALAAM, June 13 (Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will urge the African Union to get tougher on Libya on Monday, hoping to push Africa's leaders into a firmer stance on the ousting of Libya's Muammar Gaddafi.

...

U.S. officials say Clinton will praise the AU for taking a more assertive role in regional affairs including on Ivory Coast, where it joined a successful drive to force former president Laurent Gbagbo to step down after an election widely judged to have been won by his rival, Alassane Ouattara.

But the AU's position on Libya has been murkier and the organization has declined to join calls for Gaddafi's ouster, instead accusing Western nations of undermining its own efforts to find a solution to the conflict.

...

And they say the time has come for more African countries to join the chorus -- although they concede that Gaddafi's shadow still looms over the AU, which without his financial support may find it hard to pay its bills.

69. Libyan rebel raids try to take rebellion westwards
Mon Jun 13, 2011 9:59am GMT

• Progress west from Misrata slow and increasingly bloody

• Rebel units attack Gaddafi artillery with raiding parties

• Small gains come at heavy price

By Matt Robinson

DAFNIYA, Libya, June 13 (Reuters) - Rebel commander Mohammed Swahili said he picked market day in Zlitan to approach the town and raise the rebel flag, in the slow push westwards towards the Libyan capital of Tripoli.

Rebels hoisted the flag at a grocery store on the outskirts of Zlitan, 12 km (7 miles) beyond their forward front line and the next target for fighters who took the port city of Misrata.

"There's a lot of activity inside," he said, referring to the level of support in Zlitan for the uprising against Muammar Gaddafi's 41-year rule.

...

With only limited artillery, the rebels resort to using raiding parties to do damage, darting beyond the frontline to mount ambushes or attack tanks with rocket-propelled grenades.

Westerwelle makes surprise trip to Libya
German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle made a surprise trip to the rebel stronghold of Benghazi in eastern Libya on Monday. The symbolic trip was kept secret for security reasons.
Published: 13 Jun 11 12:51 CET

The trip was a brief detour on Westerwelle's planned trip to Israel. Stopping in Malta on Monday morning, the foreign minister changed planes and headed to a military base outside Benghazi, where the Libyan opposition leadership, the National Transitional Council, is based.

Development Minister Dirk Niebel accompanied Westerwelle on the three-hour visit, which is the first by any member of the German government to the rebel-controlled area.

During the symbolically-charged visit, Westerwelle intends to open the German liaison office in Benghazi, where two German diplomats have been working in recent weeks to open ties with the Libyan rebels.
...

The trip is meant to signal that Germany is committed to supporting a new, post-Qaddafi Libya, despite its abstention from a United Nations vote on military intervention in the country.

72. Libyan rebels claim breakout from Misrata, German FM visits Benghazi to open liaison office

By Associated Press, Updated: Monday, June 13, 6:06 AM

MISRATA, Libya — Government artillery rained down on rebel forces Monday but failed to stop their advance into key ground west of their stronghold at Libya’s major port. As fighting raged for a fourth day, Germany’s foreign minister paid a surprise visit to the rebel’s de facto capital.

...

In the major fighting near Misrata on Monday, an Associated Press photographer at the rebel front lines said they had pushed along the Mediterranean Sea to within 6 miles (10 kilometers) of Zlitan, the next city to the west of Misrata. A rebel commander said his forces, using arms seized from government weapons depots and fresh armaments being shipped in from Benghazi, planned to have moved into Zlitan, by Tuesday.

Ali Terbelo, the rebel commander, said other opposition forces already were in Zlitan, trying to encircle Gadhafi troops. If the rebels take the city they would be within 85 miles (135 kilometers) of the eastern outskirts of Gadhafi’s capital, Tripoli.

An AP reporter with rebel forces said shelling was intense Monday morning with rockets and artillery and mortar shells slamming into rebel lines west of Dafniya at a rate of about 7 each minute. Dafniya is about 20 miles (30 kilometers) west of Misrata.

...

The rebel thrust at Zawiya and movements farther east — near Misrata and Brega — suggested the stalemated uprising had been reinvigorated, and that Gadhafi’s defenders may become stretched thin.

Westerwelle recognizes rebel leadership in Libya

Benghazi (AP) - Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle (FDP) has recognized the Transitional Council of the Libyan rebels in Benghazi as the legitimate representative of the Libyan people.

"We are not neutral, but we are on the side of democracy and freedom," he said Monday after meeting with the Foreign Minister of the Transitional Council, Ali al-Essawi. To date, the transitional government of the German side only as "a" legitimate representative was designated.

http://www.tagesschau.de/ausland/libyenbesuch102.html

One of the reasons I was cautious is that Westerwelle can be both an idiot and original. Any number of people wouldn't mind if he was caught out in a misstatement. It's also why some caution was needed for anyone willing to read too much into German non-participation in Nato actions, especially if viewed through an American perspective.

The United Arab Emirates has given Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi’s ambassador 72 hours to leave, a day after it recognised the rebels’ National Transitional Council. “The UAE foreign ministry has informed the ambassador of Gaddafi’s regime in Abu Dhabi that it now recognises the NTC as a legitimate Libyan government. Therefore, his diplomatic mission in the country ends within 72 hours and he must leave,” the diplomat said on condition of anonymity.

Hassan El Amin, who has returned to Libya after more than 30 years' exile in the UK, said there was now "a certain degree of organisation" among the opposition.

He said the internet and social networking sites had been invaluable in the rise of the opposition, with calls for change growing over the past few years until "by the time the revolution has started, there were thousands of them".

75. Rebels claim gains east, west of Libyan capital

June 13, 2011 11:46 AM

(CBS/AP) Rebel forces in Libya trying to push out of Misrata claim to have beaten back loyalist troops, but suffered some of the heaviest casualties to date, in the latest clashes between insurgents and forces loyal to Muammar Qaddafi.

A small rebel force managed to push their way through the town of Zawiyah, about 30 miles west of Tripoli.

Rebel commanders bemoan what they see as a lack of NATO support in the form of airstrikes they say they need to push further, says CBS News correspondent Allen Pizzey reporting from Tripoli.

If the rebels manage to take that town they would effectively cut off Muammar Qaddafi's main (and perhaps only) supply road out of the country - the road to Tunisia.

Another Gaddafi insider, Sassi Garada, defects
Published on 13 Jun 2011

Two Libyan analysts say another member of Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi’s regime has defected.

Norman Benotman, a Libyan analyst in London who was in contact with friends and family of Sassi Garada, one of the first men to join Gaddafi when he took power more than 40 years ago, said today he left Libya through Tunisia.

Guma el-Gamaty, UK organizer for Libya’s interim council, also confirmed the defection.

There were initial reports that Garada fled to Britain, where he has several family members, but Benotman says Garada is in Switzerland.

British officials say they could not confirm Garada was in the UK. Swiss Foreign ministry spokeswoman Carole Waelti says the government was “not aware of the possible presence of Mr. Garada in Switzerland.”

APNewsBreak: Gadhafi insider defects
By PAISLEY DODDS, Associated Press – 1 hour ago
...
A longtime supporter of Gadhafi, Garada reportedly passed up several military promotions over the years to stay out of the limelight and serve Gadhafi, according to Benotman, who works as an analyst for the London-based Quilliam Foundation.

Garada is also from Libya's Berber minority, which has often fought with the Arab majority to have their language and customs protected. Many of the Berbers also occupy the Western mountains of Libya, where Garada had been in charge of trying to neutralize tensions, el-Gamaty said.

It is not known why Garada defected or when, but he is one in a growing list of senior officials who have fled the country, suggesting Gadhafi may be losing his grip on power.
...
Others who have defected include Foreign Minister Moussa Koussa, one of Gadhafi's earliest supporters; Interior Minister Abdel-Fatah Younes; Justice Minister Mustafa Abdul-Jalil, and Ali Abdessalam Treki, a former U.N. General Assembly president. A number of ambassadors and other diplomats also have resigned.

Libya's southern neighbors plan for life after Qaddafi
Bearing the brunt of the exodus of Libyan refugees, several countries in the Sahel region – including Senegal, Gambia, Mauritania, and Chad – have called on Qaddafi to step down.

By Alex Thurston, Guest blogger / June 13, 2011

During his long rule Col. Muammar Qaddafi has exercised substantial influence over Africa. The Colonel has aided client regimes, helped bring rulers to power or ruin, and intervened in conflicts as participant or peacemaker. As this map shows, his influence has been particularly pronounced in Sahelian countries like Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso, and Chad.

The civil war in Libya has dramatically affected the Sahel: Niger and other countries are absorbing thousands of refugees, Sahelians are being accused of serving as pro-Qaddafi mercenaries, Libyan weapons have reportedly traveled south, and money flows have been disrupted or altered. Perhaps reflecting the interlinked fates of Libya and the Sahel, the latter has been well represented in the African Union’s peace efforts, providing two of the five members of the African Union’s committee on Libya (they are President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz of Mauritania, who chairs the committee, and President Amadou Toumani Toure of Mali). This AU group, at least initially, tried to broker a peace that would have allowed Mr. Qaddafi to remain in power.

Given all that, it is significant to see several Sahelian leaders begin to speak about – and act to bring about – a post-Qaddafi Libya. Senegal appears to have led the trend, with President Abdoulaye Wade establishing relations with the Libyan rebels in mid-May. Last week, Mr. Wade met with rebel leaders in Benghazi and said that Qaddafi should step down. Gambia also recognizes the rebels. Wade’s call for a transition was seconded last week by Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, who said that Qaddafi’s “departure has become necessary.” With this, Mr. Abdel Aziz seemed to speak for the African Union as a whole. Another Sahelian leader, Chad’s President Idriss Deby, soon added his voice to the chorus. US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Chadian Foreign Minister Moussa Faki met on the sidelines of the Africa Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) forum in Zambia last week, and afterwards Clinton announced that “the Chadian government does not support Gaddafi.”

81. What we can do to bring down dictators
What we can do to bring down dictators
Faced with horrible repression in countries like Libya and Syria, it's easy to feel impotent. So how can outsiders actually help?
Carne Ross guardian.co.uk, Monday 13 June 2011 15.02 BST

How might outsiders help fight dictators? As protesters fight dictators across the Middle East, people outside are asking what they can do to help.

Traditionally, we tend to look to our own governments to act. As Gaddafi's repression of pro-democracy rebels mounted in Libya, campaigners demanded sanctions and, as the attacks intensified, military intervention. But both forms of government pressure have serious drawbacks and, too often, come very late in reaction to gross repression. In Darfur, for example, sanctions on Khartoum were not imposed until many thousands had died.

Thanks to the threat of a Russian and Chinese veto, the UN security council has yet to respond to the murder of the Syrian people by their government, although both the US and EU have imposed their own, limited, sanctions. And no amount of signatures on online petitions is likely to budge it.

Revolutionaries in Egypt and Tunisia shared advice (translated by the Atlantic) on nonviolent techniques to confront the authorities. This manual drew on Gene Sharp's brilliantly concise yet comprehensive list of nonviolent actions to defeat tyranny (available as a downloadable pdf). And for an excellent scholarly review of civil resistance, Adam Roberts and Timothy Garton Ash have assembled a collection of fascinating essays analysing nonviolent action in many different countries, including Gandhi's campaign against imperial rule in India and the overthrow of Milosevic in Serbia. But these examples are about resistance inside the country concerned, not about what outsiders can do.

Libya - Ten non-violent options
03.04.11 Carne Ross
...

1. Establishment of an escrow account for Libyan oil revenues: this would require further UNSC chapter VII authorisation. At present, it appears that all oil revenues, including from oil produced from rebel-held areas, flows to the Libyan government. All payments should instead be paid into a UN-run escrow account, the proceeds of which would be released as soon as a representative government is established in Libya. While the account is in operation, proceeds might in the interim be used for humanitarian purposes in rebel-held areas or to aid refugees. This would be a short-term measure to exert maximum pressure on the regime. My suspicion is that govts are not discussing this for fear of the effect on oil prices (this is uppermost in US debate in particular). To deal with this problem, Saudi Arabia should be asked to make very public commitments to increase its daily production to cover any shortfall of Libyan production.

2. Listing all Libyan personnel involved in repression for sanction under SCR 1970. Paras 22-23 of this resolution encourage states to nominate individuals to whom the asset freeze and travel ban would apply. At the moment, the list is very short and comprises only prominent regime members. The UN or Security Council members should make public this encouragement to Libyans on the ground to nominate members of the security forces. Why not publish an email address for such nominations or set up a wiki for Libyans to compile evidence? I realise the potential downsides of this, but the point would primarily be to act as a deterrent. There is also nothing to stop individual states declaring that those named under paras 22-23 will be subject to these measures in perpetuity. For a start, why not nominate all Libyan diplomats who have not defected for these sanctions? Why not take the names of all senior Libyan army officers and stick them on the list too?

3. Seek public declarations from all commercial companies that they will not do business with the Gadhaffi regime. The admirable folks in the Genocide Intervention Network have already begun campaigning for this and have secured several such commitments. I see no reason why governments, such as the US and UK, should not demand such commitments of companies based in their respective countries. Naming and shaming has considerable effect on the recalcitrant.

4. Immediately position monitoring units on all borders and a naval blockade to ensure that the military embargo under UNSCR 1970 is enforced, and that regime members under ICC investigation or subject to paras 22-23 of UNSCR 1970 do not escape. This could be implemented now, and does not in my view require further Security Council authority.

This last one is interesting with the short amount of hindsight we now have. At the time it was published, Zawiya was teetering, mass arrests were underway, and Benghazi was two weeks away from doom.

83. Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi hides Grad missiles from NATO raids in the ruins of Leptis Magna
The Times (UK)

June 14, 201110:29AM

ONE of the greatest abandoned cities of the Ancient World is at risk of destruction after Colonel Muammar Gaddafi's forces took over the ruins of Leptis Magna as a base for operations, rebel leaders claimed yesterday .

Rebel commanders in the city of Misrata said that Libyan government troops had moved Grad rockets and munitions into the World Heritage Site, on the coast between Misrata and Tripoli, to avoid NATO bombing.

"We received information yesterday that Gaddafi's forces are hiding inside Leptis Magna," said Abu Mohammad, the overall commander of rebel forces for the nearby town of Zlitan.

...

At its zenith, in 200BC, Leptis Magna was the third greatest Roman city in Africa after Alexandria and Carthage. It was also the birthplace of Emperor Lucius Septimus Severus.

Citing reports from a network of informants, the rebel commander claimed: "There are more than five Grad rocket-launcher trucks among the ruins. They are inside the old buildings because they know that NATO will never destroy the area."

85. Qaddafi Running Out of Money: Ex-Bank Head
Source: Bloomberg

By Lara Setrakian and Gregory Viscusi - Jun 13, 2011 1:00 PM PT

Libyan leader Muammar Qaddafi’s rule may end in weeks as international sanctions starve him of funds and rebels and NATO-led forces cut off fuel shipments, said Farhat Bengdara, who ran Libya’s central bank before defecting.

Qaddafi’s government had $500 million in cash at the end of February, when Bengdara fled, the former banker said in an interview in Dubai yesterday.

“It’s almost run out,” Bengdara said. “They have no fuel for tanks. It’s a matter of weeks” before Qaddafi is forced out of power, he said.

...

As a sign finances are being squeezed, Qaddafi’s government has asked commercial banks to hand over whatever hard currency they have, Bengdara said. Four top bank managers have defected, he said, though he declined to name them to protect their families. The regime also has 155 tons of gold bars that can’t easily be used to pay for supplies, he said.

86. Libyan rebels make gains; Qaddafi plays chess
Source: Christian Science Monitor

Germany recognizes the Libya rebels while Qaddafi plays chess with a man who claims intergalactic connections.

By Dan Murphy, Staff writer / June 13, 2011

Libya's rebels continue to roll up diplomatic success and are showing signs of taking the fight to Muammar Qaddafi's troops in a growing number of locations in western Libya, where Qaddafi was firmly in control when the NATO no-fly zone was imposed over the country on March 17.

...

Unless Mr. Ilyumzhinov's friends are going to come to Qaddafi's aid, the rebels had a better day of it. Germany Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle was the latest in a string of diplomats to recognize the rebels in their de facto capital. Germany declared the Transitional National Council is the "legitimate representative" of the Libyan government. Though the council is self-appointed, German recognition, following that of France and Italy, is part of an effort to bolster the group of businessmen, lawyers, and officials who defected from Qaddafi's regime as a focal point for transition if and when Qaddafi goes.

...

While the ongoing fighting is often described as a stalemate, it certainly appears the rebel footprint has expanded substantially thanks to NATO air cover. When the NATO air campaign began, the eastern city of Benghazi was the rebellion's western flank, with the besieged western town of Misurata the last real vestige of armed resistance to Qaddafi's forces in the west. His victories close to Tripoli were what emboldened him to send tank columns and rocket launchers against Benghazi – a force that was entering the city when it was devastated by NATO airstrikes.

Those attacks prevented the city from being overrun. And in the 10 weeks since, haltingly and reversibly to be sure, the rebels have spread out again. The siege of Misurata, a port town 100 miles east of Tripoli and Libya's third largest, has been largely broken after claiming more than 1,000 lives. In the past few days, rebels have pushed on Zawiyah, about 20 miles west of Tripoli.

87. Libya bill would redistribute $4 billion
Source: Politico

By MEREDITH SHINER | 6/13/11 5:10 PM EDT

The Senate Banking Committee will vote Thursday on a bipartisan bill to distribute an initial $4 billion in the Qadhafi government’s frozen assets to the Libyan people, the panel’s top two members announced Tuesday.

The Libyan Assets for Humanitarian Relief Act” would authorize President Barack Obama to confiscate Qadhafi’s assets, use those resources exclusively for humanitarian aide to citizens of the war-torn nation and enable Congress to oversee the distribution of the funds.

The legislation is co-sponsored by the top Democrat and Republican of the Senate Armed Services Committee as well as Foreign Relations Chairman John Kerry (D-Mass) and Homeland Security Chairman Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.).

“These frozen government assets are the property of the Libyan people and there is no reason why they should continue to be locked up while Libyans are in such dire need of assistance,” Banking Committee Chairman Tim Johnson (D-S.D.) said. “Conditions in Libya continue to deteriorate and it is vital that the Libyan people get this assistance as soon as possible. I appreciate my colleagues coming together to quickly move this bipartisan bill forward.”

98. Britain can sustain its mission in Libya for as long as it chooses--Defence Chief

Britain can sustain its mission in Libya for as long as it chooses, the head of the armed forces said on Tuesday, after the navy chief warned of tough choices if the campaign lasts more than six months.

General David Richards, the Chief of the Defence Staff, suggested that reported comments on Monday by Admiral Mark Stanhope, the head of the Royal Navy, had been misunderstood.

Richards told the BBC:

He was actually answering a different question that's been misconstrued, but we can sustain this operation as long as we choose to, absolutely clear on that.

Source: Al Jazeera

Bill to prohibit funds for US military operations in Libya unlikely to become law, but seen as snub to president.

Last Modified: 14 Jun 2011 07:46

The US House of Representatives has voted to prohibit the use of funds for US military operations in Libya.

Politicians adopted the amendment to a military appropriations bill by a vote of 248 to 163 late on Monday.

...

The amendment, introduced by Democratic representative Brad Sherman from California, invokes the War Powers Resolution, a 1973 law that limits presidential powers on sending troops abroad into combat zones without the consent of Congress.

Sherman's text states that "none of the funds made available by this act may be used in contravention of the War Powers Act."

Politicians must still approve the appropriations bill as a whole and the measure must still be approved by the Senate.

91. Libyan rebels crack siege, move toward Tripoli

By Hadeel Al-Shalchi and Maggie Michael
Associated Press / June 14, 2011

MISURATA, Libya — Libyan rebels yesterday broke out toward Tripoli from the opposition-held port of Misurata 140 miles to the east, cracking a government siege as fighters across the country mounted a resurgence in their four-month-old revolt against Moammar Khadafy.

The opposition forces pushed along the Mediterranean Sea to within 6 miles of Zlitan, the next city to the west. A rebel commander said his forces, using arms seized from government weapons depots and fresh armaments shipped in from Benghazi, expected to be in Zlitan by today.

If the rebels take the city they would be within 85 miles of the eastern outskirts of the capital, Tripoli.

The rebels gained a diplomatic boost as well yesterday when the visiting German foreign minister said the nascent opposition government was “the legitimate representative of the Libyan people."

Rebels are fighting in Khums and Zliten, but Gaddhafi's troops can still fire artillery into Misurata. This war is a series of skirmishes between small, very mobile units. Part of me thinks they should simply bypass Zliten and Khums and go straight into Tripoli.

92. Ban compares Arab "revolution" to fall of the Berlin Wall

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Monday compared the ongoing unrest in the Arab world, which he described as a "revolution," with the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989.

"These are once-in-a-generation opportunities," he said.

In a speech in Buenos Aires, Ban hailed a "new era of global change" and cited recent events in Egypt, Tunisia, Yemen and even troubled Syria as examples. But he warned against euphoria.

"Every democratic transition involves more than deposing dictators," he said.

Ban noted that even elections are "not enough" and that change needs to be systemic and to rest upon a vital civil society.

In the same way, he said, the peoples who break away from oppressive regimes need the help of the international community in social, economic and political terms.

95. Libya Relief Fund Launches National Appeal and Fundraising Campaign
(Press Release)

LOS ANGELES, June 13, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- The Libya Relief Fund, a volunteer-driven charity organization established to provide relief and aid to those affected by the humanitarian disaster in Libya, today launched a nationwide appeal and fundraising campaign designed to raise awareness of the human and social crisis unfolding in Libya and educate the general public on the nature of the conflict, the Feb. 17 movement, and the Libyan people's struggle for freedom and human rights and the inhumane repression that followed.

"Since the peaceful demonstrations that began in February and in the ensuing barbaric crackdown and ongoing siege of Libyan cities by the Gaddafi regime, a humanitarian catastrophe has unfolded in Libya, with many areas in urgent need of medical supplies, food, and the most basic aid," says Ryad Sunusi, a director of the Libya Relief Fund and member of the Libyan Movement for Democratic Change.

Muammar Gaddafi, the self-styled "Leader of the Revolution," along with his son Seif Al-Islam and right-hand man Abdullah Snusi, were recently indicted for war crimes and crimes against humanity and warrants for their arrest issued by the International Criminal Court. Evidence has linked the use of torture, mass rape, and murder and repression of the civilian population to direct orders coming from Gaddafi, his sons, and their inner circle.

Sunusi, a prominent Libyan businessman and consultant, turned against the regime and announced support for the Feb. 17 revolution immediately after the violent crackdown and slaughter of civilians committed by the Gaddafi regime in Benghazi, and together with other Libyan businessmen and professionals, committed funds to purchase and deliver aid to cities under siege by regime forces.

The scope of the humanitarian crisis in Libya is catastrophic and fluid. Since February 15, when the Libyan people rose to speak out for freedom and democracy and against tyranny and repression and the ensuing and ongoing crackdown, an estimated 11,000 people have lost their lives and 750,000 have been displaced. Over 40,000 refugees, many women and children, fled the fighting and are camped on the Libyan-Tunisian border and lack basic necessities.

"Our national fundraising campaign will include fundraising dinners and auctions in cities across the United States, workshops, fundraising marathons and special events, and other activities, which will go solely to relief efforts in Libya and provide purely non-lethal aid," Sunusi said.

"We are understaffed and need as much assistance as we can get. We welcome any assistance from individuals and organizations in assisting our nationwide fundraising efforts and welcome volunteers, promoters, and anyone willing to work with us and help raise funds for the Libyan people," Sunusi added.

The Libya Relief Fund, a California NPO, has been at the forefront of the effort in delivering much needed supplies and aid to where it is critically needed most, through direct supply networks in Libya through volunteer teams on the ground in Libya, Tunisia, and Egypt to provide medical aid, food and water, shelter, educational services, and support services for refugees affected by the conflict, as well as working with local, regional, and international aid agencies.

96. Round-up of the latest news from Libya (The Guardian):

• According to Reuters news agency, the rebels are edging slowly from Misrata towards Tripoli, but face fuel supply shortages after Muammar Gaddafi's forces hit a refinery in the city (see video at 11.34am). The rebels have pushed the front to the outskirts of Zlitan. See Google Map for all locations. Reuters wrote: "Rebels from Misrata say tribal sensitivities prevent them from attacking Zlitan, and they are instead waiting for local inhabitants to rise up."

• Libyan state TV said yesterday that Nato was bombing the town of al-Jufrah in central Libya. Nato said it conducted 149 air sorties yesterday, 62 of them strike sorties that aim to identify and hit targets but do not always deploy munitions. Nato chiefs are due to meet in Belgrade today to discuss their mission, following the comments by Robert Gates, the outgoing US defence secretary, accusing some European allies of failing to pull their weight.

• The Libyan government promised yesterday to implement proposals laid out by African countries to end the stalemate, as well as draft a constitution and media law. Hillary Clinton, the US secretary of state, urged African leaders to abandon Gaddafi, saying it was time for them to live up to their pledges to promote democracy across the continent.

Sulum, who says he does not know the whereabouts of his wife and sons, said troops burned 500 acres of land and killed cattle in the area, according to a translation by my Arabic-speaking colleague Mona Mahmood.

He also claimed helicopter gunships shot at residents while they were burying a resident who was killed earlier.

He insisted that the civilians of the area were peaceful. "We don't have the military. We are not armed, but they still shot us," he said.

He said the regime had branded everyone a terrorist, even the cows and sheep.

102. Is journalism failing to properly report the Arab Spring?--The Guardian
Chris Doyle, director of the Council for Arab-British Understanding identifies six shortcomings in the media's approach to the Middle East. They include the lack of Arabic speaking journalists, rushed reporting, and a love of sensationalism. He concludes:

There are many commendable reporters who have illuminated our understanding. Those reporting on the ground have typically shown remarkable courage and bravery to feed our 24/7 hunger for constant updates. They have risked life and limb, with many being arrested in Libya, and some have even been sexually assaulted. Yet as one looks back over the last three incredible months, one cannot help feeling that the extraordinary images have yet to be matched by extraordinary analysis.

In a similar vein, Joshua Landis, director of Middle East studies at the University of Oklahoma, writes:

The real story is not the fake Gay Girl in Damascus – a juicy distraction that has dominated the airwaves for the last two days – but the way so many journalists cannot check their stories before deadlines because they are not permitted into Syria and don't understand Arabic. The Syrian government doesn't even try to add English subtitles to its version of events and Youtube recordings, making them useless to the thousands of foreign reporters who cannot understand Arabic. The result is bad reporting that often relies on one side of the story.

It should be pointed out that Landis, like the rest of us also fell for the Gay Girl in Damascus hoax.

But is right about standards of reporting and should journalists covering the region be Arabic speakers?

Asked how long it takes to learn Arabic, our Middle East editor, Ian Black, wryly said "a lifetime". Google translation is a tempting substitute in the meantime, but notoriously unreliable.

We are doing our best to check information with over-stretched Arabic speaking colleagues, but should we start taking a course?

104. SYRIA: The eastern city of Deir Azzor could be the next target for bombardment
The city of Deir Azzor in eastern Syria could be the next target for bombardment, activists have told the human rights group Avaaz.

Dozens of tanks have been reported entering the city of Deir Azzor. Activists are saying that it is feared the city could be the regime's next target following a week of bombardment by the 4th Division in the Jsr al-Shughour area. It is feared the 4th Division is planning a major military operation in revenge for large scale protests which have swept the city in the past few weeks.

AFP reports that six people were killed in the city today.

105. Ottawa recognizes rebels as Libya's government

By: CTV.ca News Staff
Date: Tuesday Jun. 14, 2011 7:32 AM PT

Ottawa announced it is officially recognizing the rebel National Transitional Council as the legitimate government of Libya as the House of Commons opened a debate ahead of a vote on a proposed extension of Canada's role in the NATO mission.

The announcement came as Ottawa announced the commitment of $2 million in new humanitarian aid for Libya as the House of Commons opened a debate ahead of a vote on a proposed extension of Canada's role in the NATO mission to Libya.

Earlier, Ottawa announced the commitment of $2 million in new humanitarian aid for Libya, some of which would go toward helping Libyans subjected to sexual violence as a tool of war.

106. The Guardian's round-up of news from Libya this afternoon:

• Canada has joined the list of countries recognising the National Transitional Council of Libyan rebels in Benghazi as the legitimate representative of the Libyan people.

• Rebels are advancing westward in an attempt to retake the oil town of Brega (see map). Nato has bombed Brega over the last few weeks and used attack helicopters against Muammar Gaddafi's forces there.

• East of Tripoli, Nato has been dropping leaflets illustrated with pictures of Apache attack helicopters warning government troops to abandon their posts outside Zlitan, which is just west of rebel-held Misrata. Chris Stephen, who is in Misrata, will be sending more on this shortly.

107. NATO drops leaflets intended for Gaddafi forces on rebels--The Guardian
Chris Stephen in Misrata sends more on the leaflets Nato dropped on Libyan government forces' lines today showing a lurid picture of an Apache helicopter and a burning tank and warning: "If you see this aircraft, your time is finished." Chris writes:

The leaflets are presumably intended to dissuade Gaddafi forces surrounding Misrata from their daily bombardment of the outskirts of the city with Grad rockets that have killed 70 soldiers and wounded more than 300 in the past eight days.

But unknown to Nato, rebel troops had moved five miles forward of their front line so the bomb that contained the leaflets and exploded in the air landed among rebel troops.

Their first reaction was whoops of joy as they dug in among new positions after their advance; rebel commanders have complained over the past week of bombardments of the lack of Nato countermeasures. Then the rebel soldiers realised Nato had dropped the leaflets assuming they were government troops. As more jets circled overhead, the rebels upped sticks: within half an hour the entire rebel army had pulled back five miles to its original front line, which commanders say Nato has designated as a Red Line - not to be crossed in order to leave everything forward of it as a free fire zone.

108. Libyan rebels make fresh advances
Edited on Tue Jun-14-11 11:43 AM by tabatha
Pro-democracy fighters have made fresh advances in both the east and the west of Libya, gaining ground against forces loyal to the Libyan leader, Muammar Gaddafi, reports say.

In the west, the fighters managed to to force government troops into retreat from the town of Kikla, about 150km southwest of the capital, Tripoli, on Tuesday, news agencies said.

And in the east, they launched more attacks against Gaddafi forces near the oil town of Brega, where fighting on Monday killed at least 25 fighters and wounded dozens more.

The wounded were transferred to a hospital in Ajdabiya, 160km south of Benghazi, the de facto capital of the rebels who have been fighting to overthrow Gaddafi since mid-February.

The rebels have spent months trying to seize the strategic oil hub of Brega, which would open the road to Sirte, the Libyan leader's home town, and from there to Tripoli.

http://english.aljazeera.net/news/africa/2011/06/2011614133151319133.html

Check the video - the Libyans have been so co-opted by NATO that they are using NATO weapons .... NOT!!!

The ingenuity of the Libyans is amazing. Their independence and spirit to do what ever they can, is simply inspiring.

DIY - do it yourself. Revolutionary ammunition by revolutionaries.

Gaddafi and Tunisian revolution
I did not know or forgot that Gaddafi condemned the uprising in Tunisia, and was afraid of foreign intervention.
(Guess what, Tunisia if fine with no foreign intervention because it did not slaughter its citizens.)
There were also reports that Gaddafi would probably have gotten involved in Tunisia had uprisings not started in Libya.
Ironically, some of Gaddafi's family have fled through peaceful Tunisia.

109. Secretary Clinton condemns Iran for supporting the crackdown in Syria

Repression in Iran and Syria

Press Statement
Hillary Rodham Clinton
Secretary of State
Washington, DC

June 14, 2011

______________________________________________________________________________________

Two years ago this week, Iranian citizens went to the polls in the hopes of expressing their democratic rights. But the authorities in Tehran had no interest in the will of the people. When the people reached for their aspirations, the government responded with brutal repression.

Two years later, that repression continues. And today in Syria, Iran is supporting the Asad regime’s vicious assaults on peaceful protesters and military actions against its own cities. The world was shocked by images of a 13-year-old Syrian boy, tortured and mutilated by Syrian security forces. It reminded us of a young Iranian woman, killed in the street two years ago for all to see.

As we remember the terror and tragedy that accompanied Iran's crackdown, and as we work with the international community to increase the pressure on Asad and his regime, let us renew our resolve to stand with citizens -- including the citizens of Syria and Iran -- who yearn to be free and to exercise their universal rights.

111. Tripoli bides time as Gaddafi support ebbs away

Libya's intransigent leader appears increasingly isolated as capital's wary residents wait for rebellion to break through

Xan Rice in Tripoli
guardian.co.uk, Tuesday 14 June 2011 16.08 BST

In the late afternoon the cafe was full of men smoking and drinking coffee, mint tea or strawberry juice. It was a very public setting, but the businessman judged that he was in like-minded company and so did not bother to lower his voice.

"Gaddafi is losing support every day," he said, placing another small coal on top of his shisha pipe. "If he wanted peace he would have quit."

These days of bombs and bluster and seemingly endless queues for fuel in Tripoli are the "glorious hours" of the Libyan people, according to their leader, Muammar Gaddafi, whose stern image gazes down from billboards across the capital. For nearly 42 years it has been only the exceedingly brave, or the foolish, who dared to dispute what he said. Or to talk openly about life without the "Brother Leader" in charge. But now, nearly four months into a conflict that has torn the country apart, people in Tripoli appear to be slowly losing their fear of speaking out.

"Ninety-five per cent of people want him to leave, not just because of politics, but because of our desire for a return to normal life," the businessman said.

...

In the backroom of another store, a small, friendly man old enough to remember the days before Gaddafi, confirmed this. "Most people want him out and more people can talk about this now than before because he is under pressure. But you still have to be careful. If you are caught, God knows what will happen to you."

112. LIBYA: The Guardian's latest news summary:

• Muammar Gaddafi's forces have pulled out of Kikla; rebels are now in control (see 12.45pm).

• In Tripoli, residents are becoming more willing to criticise the Libyan leader, although an uprising there is still unlikely, as Xan Rice writes here.

The accuracy of the air strikes, which appear to have caused few civilian casualties, mean that Gaddafi has been unable to convince people that this is "crusader aggression" against all Libyans, even if many agree that the bombing raids are no longer just about protecting ordinary people. "Nato good, good," is a common refrain from people talking to foreign reporters.

• Nato has dropped leaflets on Libyan government forces' lines today showing a lurid picture of an Apache helicopter and a burning tank and warning: "If you see this aircraft, your time is finished" (see 3.52pm). The leaflets landed on rebels who had moved five miles forward, unknown to Nato.

• Canada has recognised the rebels as the legitimate representative of the Libyan people.

• Douglas Alexander, the British shadow foreign secretary, has complained about Nato's post-conflict planning. "First, it was the United Nations' job, then was only 'embryonic', then it was Britain's job, and now Britain is said to be in charge of the 'thinking' … This simply isn't good enough. It is urgent that the British government brings clarity and coherence to its role, the UN role and the Transitional National Council's role in a post-Gaddafi Libya."

113. Liberia cuts ties with Gaddafi's Libya

Tue Jun 14, 2011 4:48pm GMT

MONROVIA (Reuters) - Liberia severed diplomatic ties with Libya on Tuesday, the latest African country to distance itself from leader Muammar Gaddafi since a NATO-backed uprising against him.

The move, announced by the office of President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, comes after Senegal received a delegation of Libyan rebel leaders last month and Mauritania's president was quoted last week as saying Gaddafi's departure was necessary.

"The Government took the decision after a careful review of the situation in Libya and determined that the Government of Colonel Gaddafi has lost the legitimacy to govern Libya," the statement from Sirleaf's office said.

"The violence against the Libyan people must stop," it said of its decision to withdraw the Liberian envoy from Tripoli and suspend activities of the Libyan representation in the Liberian capital Monrovia.

114. Libyan Rebels: A Sound Track
Libyan Rebels: A Sound Track
In Misurata, fighters turn to Pink Floyd in their war against Qadaffi.
By Xan Rice

Many men have psyched themselves up for war by listening to rock and roll or heavy metal. But how many have sung Pink Floyd’s “Mother” within earshot of the enemy in the dead of night? “When it got really quiet, we’d play guitar and sing ‘Mother, do you think they’ll drop the bomb?’” said Abdulfatah Shaka, 22, his rocket-propelled-grenade launcher at his side. “The snipers would get furious and start shooting everywhere.”

It was the last week of April in the Libyan city of Misurata, the scene of the most-intense battles of the revolution. This is an old-fashioned, urban war: nonsurgical and hugely bloody. Muammar Qaddafi has deployed tanks, multi-barreled rocket launchers, snipers, foot soldiers, and foreign mercenaries. Facing them are civilians with light weapons, Mad Max–style pickup trucks, and, in the case of Shaka and the dozen or so merry young men he leads, a zest for rock music.

Less than three months earlier, Shaka was an engineering student who had never even held a gun. Bassam Essraity, a handsome 23-year-old with gelled hair and a trim beard, who now sat opposite him cradling a Belgian-made assault rifle, was doing media studies. They would play guitar together, jamming on the beach or hanging out in parking lots at night in their cars, doors open, drinking strong coffee or bottles of non-alcoholic beer.

After asking me to sit on his left—firing RPGs had destroyed the hearing in his right ear—Shaka explained that his introduction to pop and rock, and to the English language, came via the Backstreet Boys. As he learned to play the guitar, and broadened his musical horizons through Internet downloads, his taste grew more refined. “Neil Young, Metallica, and Pink Floyd, especially Dark Side of the Moon,” he said. “Iron Maiden and Nirvana too,” Essraity added. “We were just young guys enjoying music, dreaming of freedom.”

116. That story should end any remnant stereotypes
or old ideas of a monolithic Libya. I have to admit I didn't quite know what to make of it myself.

TributeFM just doesn't buffer well at times, esp. early in the show. By accident more than design, I found that the m3u file (bottom link) run through RealPlayer(of all things) will work when nothing else does.

I've been trying to piece together a story of some GF Generals who didn't like what they heard on the radio. Late last week I think it was, there was a report that three GF Generals were ordered to attack and retake the Nafusa or they would be executed.

Sun or Monday there was a tweet (which I've lost) about one G General who had defected in the south and had escaped over the Algerian border.

Then this:

#Nafousa 06/13/11: #Colonel #Mohammed #Muftah: in charge G forces in area btwn #Tiji & #Wazen defected; handed himself to Tunisian officials

Now this:

G forces assassinated Mr #Ahmed #AlTunsi (Also from #Tuareg) on June 7th-he refused orders to kill innocent people & advance #AlQala #Yefren
cont. #Ahmed #AlTunsi's body was given to his family. They were lied to & told that he had been killed during a NATO strike

I'll leave it at that and head off to Afriki Djigui Theatr -Thanks!

The Libyan army has fired more Grad missiles into Tunisia near the border crossing of Dehiba say locals. They report hearing at least five explosions although there appear to have been no casualties.
Meanwhile rebel forces have edged further out of Misrata pushing pro-Gradaffi troops back from the city. They have reached the outskirts of Zlitan which lies west of Misrata on the road to Tripoli. There have been reports of heavy fighting in the area.

118. Libya’s DIY Rebels Outfit Trucks With Copter Rockets
Source: Wired (news blog)

By Spencer Ackerman June 14, 2011 | 5:33 pm

Most people look at a rocket mounted on a helicopter and their imaginations end there. In Libya, rebels seeking to oust dictator Moammar Gadhafi don’t have that luxury. They see rocket pods and think: that would look good mounted on my flatbed truck.

Our pal Brian Conley’s Alive In Libya website brings us this video (at link, 1:34), in which Abdulsalam Elshein of the “Free Libya Martyrs Brigade” explains how his colleagues in the city of Dorna stripped captured helicopters of their rockets and outfitted them on trucks the rebels drive to fight Gadhafi’s forces. (Elshein refers to these as “C5 rockets,” but I think he might mean the Soviet-made S-5 model.) Anti-Gadhafi machinists welded the rocket pods to the back of Elshein’s unarmored truck. Instant missile launcher, Mad Max-style.

“It is an effective weapon with high accuracy targeting,” Elshein says, “and praise be to God, it has an effect on the enemy.” ....

This is hardly the only example of Libya’s DIY weapons tech. Some string together Grad rocket pods, power them with a car battery and fire them with harvested doorbells. Others scavenge ancient guns and artillery out of decaying army depots, ending up with antique Lee-Enfield bolt action rifles. They don’t have much experience placing accurate fires, and Elshein admits he doesn’t have much training on his new rocket-enhanced truck.

But still, on Monday, they broke free of Gadhafi’s siege of Misurata and started marching to Tripoli. Score one for DIY.

The Mind of a Dictator
For the past 18 years, I have studied the brain activity, psychology, and genetics of psychiatric patients and the brain scans of psychopathic serial killers. A few months ago, I was approached by a non-profit human rights organization to create a presentation on the mind of a dictator--an especially compelling issue in light of recent uprisings against autocrats in the Middle East and North Africa. After combing through literature on the world's worst dictators and combining it with my neuroscience research and that of others on psychopaths, I presented my theory in May at the Oslo Freedom Forum, an annual conference produced by the Human Rights Foundation. The following article is based on my speech, an attempt to look inside the minds of these elusive and powerful world players.

London 2012 Olympics: Libya gets hundreds of tickets amid fears Colonel Gaddafi will disrupt Games
The Libyan regime has successfully requested close to 1,000 tickets to events at the London Olympics and the country’s attendance at the Games is being co-ordinated by the Gaddafi family.
The Libyan Olympic Committee is headed by Muhammad Gaddafi and the Government now fears a major diplomatic embarrassment over the attendance of regime figures.
The decision to grant Libya the valuable tickets will infuriate the million Britons who have missed out on attending over-subscribed events.
Government sources warned of a diplomatic crisis last night after it emerged that Col Gaddafi himself may try to disrupt the event as a publicity coup if he remains in power in 2012.

The House of Commons has overwhelmingly voted to extend Canada's mission in Libya for three and a half months.

The Conservative motion passed by a vote of 294-1, with Green Party Leader Elizabeth May being the lone member of Parliament to vote against.

...

MPs began debating whether to extend Canada's mission in the country on Tuesday morning.

...

"We live in a world that's not stable, where democracy isn't there for everyone or human rights aren't respected," (Liberal Leader Bob) Rae said, defining the debate around the rights of citizens.

"Do we simply take the case of national sovereignty and say we can never intervene in the affairs of another country ... or do we understand that the entire evolution of international law has taken us to this point, that we have to say whatever goes on inside a country is just as important as what happens between countries?"

"The answers are not always simple and in fact the answers are not always clear. But we are slowly but surely as a world taking the human footsteps to the point where we can say we will not allow people to be brutalized by their government."

122. With Roman Ruins Under Threat, Libya's Ancient Past Presses Against Its Present
Source: TIME

Posted by Ishaan Tharoor Tuesday, June 14, 2011 at 7:20 pm

According to a report on CNN.com, NATO officials overseeing the aerial bombing campaign against the forces of Muammar Gaddafi in Libya could target positions nestled within an ancient complex of Roman ruins. Rebel sources claim that Gaddafi troops have stashed rocket launchers and other military equipment at the site of the ancient city of Leptis Magna, a remarkably well-preserved relic of Roman antiquity halfway down the road between Tripoli and the besieged rebel-held port of Misratah. With NATO having escalated its efforts to topple the Gaddafi regime, no archaeological treasure — not even a UNESCO heritage site such as Leptis Magna — may be entirely safe.

That Leptis Magna can fall under such peril is testament to how drastically things have deteriorated for Gaddafi and his family, whose rule seemed comfortably assured a few years ago. Then, as Libya was gradually ingratiating itself with the mainstream of the international community, Gaddafi's most visible son, Saif al-Islam, marketed the country's impressive array of classical Greco-Roman ruins, which span the breadth of its long Mediterranean coast. In 2007, in the shadow of a Greek amphitheater at Cyrene — near the present day rebel stronghold of Benghazi — Saif presided over the glitzy launch of a mega-billion dollar project aimed at conserving the Libyan coast and paving the way for high-end tourism. Breathless accounts in the Western media followed of Libya's historical curiosities — many conveniently accessible to Europe's well-heeled aboard yachts and cruise ships skimming the shores of North Africa.

Of course, now, a budding tourist industry has been left out in the cold, replaced by the specter of bomb attacks and troop offensives. The grandeur of Leptis Magna's sweeping colonnades and pristine temples seems insignificant when faced with the reported atrocities perpetrated by Gaddafi soldiers and the geo-political headache the West's intervention into Libya has created for NATO's member states.

...

Still, the politics of a Libya that may soon be free of Gaddafi will hardly be measured in the cold stone of its many ruins. Rather, it'll be realized through the complex alliances of its tribes, the negotiations of regional and local powerbrokers and the significant economic interests invested in the country's oil reserves, considerations that trump the symbolic weight of history. But after the schemes of men hatch and fade, those ruins will still stand in mute testament.

125. DIY Weapons of the Libyan Rebels
Edited on Tue Jun-14-11 08:48 PM by tabatha
I hate weapons and killing hardware.

But these pictures completely trash the notion of a planned, armed, co-opted revolution.

Take the office chair to the war.

WTF am I doing here?

For the past four months in Libya, rebel forces made up of civilians and army defectors have been waging battles against Muammar Qaddafi's armed forces, holding their own and sometimes advancing with the assistance of NATO air strikes. Scrambling to arm themselves against mercenaries and a professional army, rebels have been making use of everything they can -- from using captured weapons and munitions to rigging anti-aircraft guns and aircraft rocket launchers to the backs of civilian pickup trucks. Collected here are recent images of some of this weaponry used by the Libyan rebels.

I am incredibly impressed with their engineering skills and their will to dive right in.
Just think how those skills could be used in a free, democratic society.
There is some really good brain power there.

126. Of course, and the same people saying that will also say that...
...they were "fooled" into "fighting an enemy they couldn't win." So on one hand they're Islamic militant terrorists who are well armed and equipped and trained and on the other hand they're useless people with no training or weapons and they shouldn't have dared to rise up to begin with.

Thank you for the picture gallery! :)

127. How social media users are helping NATO fight Gadhafi in Libya
Edited on Tue Jun-14-11 11:09 PM by tabatha
Every morning at 7:30 a.m., in the picturesque woodlands of rural Ontario, a retired auto shop manager named Janice Clinch helps her grandson get ready for school and fires up her computer for another day of battle in the Libyan desert.

The 59-year-old has never met anybody from Libya. She has not visited the Arab world; chronic pain makes it hard for her to get around. But from her home near Seeley’s Bay, 40 kilometres northeast of Kingston, she joined a committed cadre of social media users who have become, in effect, volunteer intelligence analysts. On Twitter, Facebook and other services, they discuss satellite images, vessel tracking data and the latest gossip from their sources inside the country.

....

Ms. Clinch was among the first to respond. Months of online activism earned her a role as administrator of the Libyan Youth Movement page on Facebook – the only non-Libyan honoured with the job, she says – and on Monday she noticed that a regular member, somebody located in western Libya, had pinpointed a gas station converted into a temporary headquarters for Col. Gadhafi’s forces. She tweeted the co-ordinates, along with the longitude and latitude of a few other targets passed along from the same source, asking NATO to “clean up” the government troops.

Rebels take control of Libyan town
KIKLA, Libya, June 14 (Reuters) - Forces loyal to Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi have pulled out of the town of Kikla, about 150 km (90 miles) southwest of Tripoli, and rebels are now in control, a Reuters photographer there said on Tuesday.

The photographer, Youssef Boudlal, said pro-Gaddafi forces had retreated to positions about 9 km from the town. The rebels were setting up defensive positions in case of a counter-attack, he said. (Reporting by Youssef Boudlal; Writing by Christian Lowe; Editing by Janet Lawrence)

UPDATE 2-Libyan rebels edge forward on eastern front
AJDABIYAH, Libya, June 14 (Reuters) - Rebels fighting Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi advanced westward on Tuesday aiming to retake the oil town of Brega in a push to extend their control over the east of the North African country.

Blasts rumbled around the desert as the offensive, launched on Sunday, gathered momentum after weeks of deadlock between rebels and Gaddafi forces on the eastern front. Up to 21 fighters have been killed, rebels and doctors said.

"There is fighting happening there right now. We have advanced to 20 km (east of) Brega. They (rebels) are advancing now. Very soon they will be in Brega," said fighter Osman al-Maghrabi, 35, who used to serve in Gaddafi's army.

128. Tripoli bides time as Gaddafi support ebbs away
http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2011/jun/14/tripoli-support-gaddafi-ebbs-away">Tripoli bides time as Gaddafi support ebbs away

"If he wanted peace, he would have quit."

...

"Ninety-five per cent of people want him to leave, not just because of politics, but because of our desire for a return to normal life," the businessman said.

Foreign reporters are not permitted to work freely in Tripoli, so obtaining a genuine sense of people's feelings here is difficult. But on several furtive trips around the city without government minders, it was possible to talk to a range of residents on the streets. The picture that emerged was of a people weary of the inconveniences of war, and weary of being held hostage to the whims of one man - a people now just waiting for the end.

Soon, Tripoli, soon.

129. Tunisia ready to recognise Libya rebels; fresh reports of Libyan soldiers deserting

Tunisia toughened its line against the Tripoli government, declaring itself ready to recognise the rebel administration, as residents near the border reported more Libyan shells landing there on Tuesday.

There were fresh reports meanwhile of Gaddafi's soldiers deserting his cause and crossing into Tunisia to escape the conflict.

130. LIBYA: Round-up of latest developments and analysis

Britain and its Nato allies no longer believe bombing alone will end the conflict in Libya, well-placed government officials have told the Guardian. Instead, they are pinning their hopes on the defection of Muammar Gaddafi's closest aides, or the Libyan leader's agreement to flee the country. "No one is envisaging a military victory," said one senior official.

Xan Rice in Tripoli reports on the growing frustration in Libya at Gaddafi's intransigence
. A business man told him: "Ninety-five per cent of people want him to leave, not just because of politics, but because of our desire for a return to normal life."

Xan writes:

Even among some senior officials close to Gaddafi there is sense of gloom, regret, and even inevitability.

Nato dropped leaflets threatening Apache air strikes against government forces near the western rebel stronghold of Misrata, but they landed on ground claimed by the rebels, writes Chris Stephens. Thousands of leaflets were sprinkled from a bomb that detonated above no man's land east of the city, raining down over rebel units who had moved their frontline five miles forward from the shattered village of Dafniya. The rebels had apparently neglected to tell Nato about the move.

Hundreds of tickets to the London 2012 Olympics have been allocated to Libya, the organisers of the Games have confirmed. Libya's Olympic authorities, which is headed by Muammar Gaddafi's eldest son, Muhammad were allocated "a few hundred" passes to the event.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Selcuk Unal said Wednesday that an application to visit the refugees has been made on behalf of the Hollywood celebrity and goodwill ambassador for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.

Unal says the application is being assessed.

Hurriyet columnist Murat Yetkin says if she is allowed to come it will draw attention to the refugee crisis.

If she comes, we can be sure that the world public attention might triple thanks to the presence of Jolie at the Turkish-Syrian border.

132. Misrata leader appeals for NATO help for Zlitan
The leader of the besieged Libyan rebel city of Misrata made a personal appeal through the Guardian today for Nato to save the inhabitants of a neighbouring town facing annihilation by government forces, Chris Stephen reports from Misrata.

Sheikh Khalifa Zuwawi, the chairman of Misrata council, made the appeal after reports that Muammar Gaddafi had demanded that rebel-held districts of the town of Zlitan, 30 miles west of Misrata, surrender or face destruction.

Zlitan's rebellion began on Friday with battles around the town's hospital, but sources in Misrata say the rebels are now pinned back into one district of the town under heavy artillery fire.

Photographers who got to within four miles of Zlitan through no-man's land yesterday took pictures of government rockets exploding in the town.

Misrata's own rebel forces say that without heavy weapons or Nato support they are powerless to break through a fortified ring around the town and save the inhabitants.

"As you know our forces could not get into Zlitan," Sheikh Zuwawi told The Guardian. "We need Nato help. We are very surprised because Nato has delayed to bomb the Grad (rocket artillery) forces."
