Wash. Supreme Court: You can be fired for using medical marijuana
Source: Seattle Times

... The Washington state Supreme Court ruled Thursday that TeleTech Customer Care, a Colorado-based firm that handles customer service for Sprint from its Bremerton facility, was allowed to fire a woman for failing its required drug test.

The plaintiff, who sued under the pseudonym Jane Roe, was pulled out of her training class after a week and fired Oct. 18, 2006, because she failed a pre-employment drug test. She had a valid medical-marijuana authorization from a doctor.

... Roe's attorney argued that state law implied employers had to accommodate medical-marijuana use outside the workplace. The court disagreed in a 8-1 decision, explaining that the law explicitly permits employers to disallow on-site medical-marijuana use, but remains mum about medical-marijuana use outside the workplace.

The state Supreme Court majority opinion noted that the state Human Rights Commission, which investigates employee discrimination cases, cannot pursue claims related to medical-marijuana use because it is illegal under federal law.

3. Meaning essentially that you can get fired for having cancer.
If you don't take marijuana to alleviate the nausea of chemo, you miss work anyway and you'll be fired.

8. What's really frightening, is that we haven't hit bottom of stupid, yet.
I feel like I'm caught in a freak show that just gets more bizarre & heinous every day.

10. I know exactly what you mean! I was telling someone just awhile ago I
feel like I'm trapped in a box. In this state the weird just keeps getting weirder. My first thought is where do these people come from, and then what really concerns me are those that support them, vote them in, seem to be growing in numbers. I'm concerned about what the 2012 election will bring. And as you say, we haven't hit the bottom of stupid, yet.

6. So I guess you can get fired for taking any prescription medication now.
Isn't that basically what this means.

11. what about marinol?
it would show up on a drug test, yet it's legal. so, depending upon whether you found marinol or whole-plant to be more effective - one would get you fired but the other is federally protected?

the problem here is the hypocrisy, not the substance.

9. Federal law needs to change, but it won't.
We need to feed the prison industrial complex & our drug laws make it easy to lock up commoners, instead of the banksters & white collar shysters.

Destroy an economy, get a bonus.
Smoke weed, get a sentence.
