Just HOW Hard Can We Make it to Save a Dog’s Life? NYC’s ACC Is Looking to Find Out.
One of the many, many complaints rescuers (and regular adopters) generally have with high kill shelters is how incredibly difficult they often make it to adopt/pull an animal. And despite all the negative media attention they’ve recently received, NYC’s ACC took the cake today in terms of stacking the deck against kind-hearted people trying desperately to save a life. ACC, you disgust me.

This morning, on the Urgent Part 2 Facebook page (this page is the work of a dedicated volunteer who posts each night’s euthanasia list and desperately tries to network the animals to save as many lives as possible), a photo of a dog was posted. This dog, Ebony, was on last night’s euthanasia (KILL) list. In today’s photo, she was lying in her own waste.

Nathan Winograd posted this photo to his Facebook page today, along with the following comment: “This is Ebony. She is scheduled to be killed in New York City’s pound, right down the street from the richest SPCA (the ASPCA) in the nation which last year took in over $100,000,000, despite the Mayor’s Alliance receiving over $20,000,000 in Maddie’s Fund grants, despite the largest adopter pool in the U.S. (8,000,000), and despite a per capita intake rate 1/7 that of No Kill Reno, NV. And while she waits for her death, she is kept in the filthiest conditions possible. NYC’s claim to be a ‘national model’ is a cruel hoax.”

And, in a perfect example of the power of human compassion, dozens and dozens of people came forward wanting to help Ebony – people from across the country (and world). There were promises of donations, offers to foster/adopt, etc. You can follow the attempt to save her life on the threads from her photos, linked above. There was someone willing to take her, plans were in the works … she had a lifeline.

6. We are getting ready to adopt our third rescue dog. One is a rescue from Michigan and
and one is a rescue from Georgia. The 3rd one is also coming from Georgia. I live way up north in NYS. There are so many high-kill shelters in the south and the way they often euthanize by gassing makes me sick. These are wonderful dogs who by no fault of theirs, end up in horrid conditions. The people that owned them and dumped them and more often then not, abused them, should be facing criminal charges.

3. I cannot bear to look further than the post.
I appreciate the issue and the topic, but if I read further, knowing I cannot afford another pet in addition to the ones we have, I will be sad and depressed and haunted for days.
And that is a regrettable fact.

5. it breaks my heart every day. But I continue to read and post
joining the hundreds hoping the policies will change. Evil people forgetting God's Word, the animals we cast aside as pets know not their fates, but go sadly alone into the darkness.

8. Got my boys through Pet Rescue
(two beautiful long haired tuxedo cats). I never even considered going to a breeder and am adament with everyone about the need for neutering. All we can do is continue to bring attention to these kinds of situations.

7. Those interested should check out the website--The League of Humane Voters of NYS.
There is also one in NYC.

9. there are many fine people in rescue. sadly
there are also many, many nuts. i tried to adopt a terrier a few years ago. the third degree was unbelievable. several people were outraged that i wanted a terrier for vermin control-"we only adopt companion dogs". sheesh
so, i ended up getting a puppy (2 sisters, actually) from a less than fantastic breeder.
i tried.

from now on i will stick to the chicago pound, where they are thrilled to see a dog get a home.

10. I tried to adopt a cat at a local 'non-profit' shelter 3 years ago
they turned out to be for-profit, and I will never go to them again, she was 8 yrs old, had been there for almost a year, they wanted $300 AND a letter from my employer vouching for my character. She stayed up on adopt-a-pet for another 9 months before her listing was gone.

The words fuck you came easily that day. And they are within walking distance from where I live. Shame on them forever.

11. I'm sorry you had that experience, but. I understand why they do that.
I used to volunteer at a local shelter, and you'd be amazed by the number of animals that ended up back at the shelter after the adopters had passed the screening process - I remember one that was turned in by a neighbor after the adopters moved and left the dog in the back yard of the house to starve after they left. Some people do horrible things. Sometimes perhaps shelters don't have the best approach.
