In some ways I can understand Edwards. First, because the sick wife was probably not having sex with him. Second, because there is an expectation that she will not live long, so you begin to emotionally move on. Also, FDR probably never had to answer such questions. So he got to cover up his affair without having to lie about it, except to his wife, but apparently she was also having affairs with other women while he was President.
