Either political naivite or stupidity or arrogance or all of the above

You're a democratic officeholder.

You know that you have a hit on you by Andrew Breitbart, James O'Keefe, and Matt Drudge, just to name three.

They have the option of hacking, but really don't have to go through the work to find dirt on you.

All they have to do is wait for a phonecall or an e-mail.

From someone who knows about anything you've done that will compromise your political status and career. NOBODY keeps a secret. You CAN'T TRUST ANYONE.

The person with whom you've rubbed online will end up on the national evening news, giving an expose. Or become another Drudge headline.

You're feeding your enemies.

You can't "afford" a "private" life. Those days are over.

1. Damn shame, too.
Everybody should be entitled to a private life.

We didn't have to wait for the surveillance society-we welcomed it into our lives.

2. Of course all of us are entitled.
Doesn't mean that right is respected.

The media had the option of ignoring Anthony Weiner's private life and didn't. And Breitbart, O'Keefe, and Drudge and their ilk are not prosecuted.

You have a private life to the extent you're allowed to have one.

3. I'm also pretty proactive in protecting my privacy.
No facebook or twitter.

Nothing's perfect, but there are a few things one can do that don't involve getting too public.

5. Agreed.
My main contention is the "original" social network: People talk. The right amount of being offended, the right amount of money, the right amount of fear (fear that if they don't cooperate with "the media", the same media will exaggerate their role in the controvery), etc. and you've been outed w/o the benefit of Facebook and/or Twitter.

6. My GF asked me once why I wouldn't run for local office...
My reply was, "even on the local level, these days, you live in a fishbowl". I added that she would live in that same fishbowl. (she's a very shy person). She suddenly realized that politics is less about issues than it is about image.

I like my nice quiet life.
