1. Weiner doesn't have Kennedy's family background and global name recognition.
Such things matter in politics.

2. yes it is, but he was a Kennedy. That helped. And it was a different age
If it happened today, no way would someone continue on in Congress.

5. Do you think Teddy had something to resign for? My recollection is that he was an accident victim.

6. he walked away from a woman in a submerged car that he'd driven into the water
He admitted he drove drunk. He didn't report it- until the car was discovered the next morning. Yeah, I'd say that was something resign worthy. Yes, I'm glad he remained in the Senate, but I do think that kind of behavior is something someone should resign over. Look, the only reason he wasn't charged with vehicular manslaughter is because he was Teddy Kennedy.

8. Swam away. And I think you are judging him by today's standards, be it MADD or whatever.
Richard Pryor on the Sunset Strip discusses the responsibility of the paramour to get the hell out of the way of danger on her own.

Why did Mary Jo die and Ted survive?

Couldn't it have just as easily been Mary Jo got out and Ted drowned?

9. What?
If you and I are in a single car accident, and I look over and see that you are probably dead, are you saying that I should go home, sober up, and then call the police? Really? You'd be ok with that?

10. Time of day? Middle of the night. Seeing what? Nothing, consistent with the light to see with.
Do I have a duty to die myself trying to save you?

Richard Pryor says teach your old lady to run so she can race you home from the shooting. Or whatever the trouble is.

11. You don't know that Kennedy pleaded guilty and got a suspended sentence?
He really should have gone to jail.

12. Leaving the site of an accident? That would be very unusual to go to prison for that.
Who are you and why are u smearing Teddy Kennedy on Democratic Underground?

13. Because Chappaquiddick was an absolute disgrace.
Yes, people don't usually go to prison for leaving the scene of an accident. But when they crash their car into a river, swim away, leaving a dead or dying woman by herself to drown, then prison time *would* normally be expected. Ted Kennedy was an effective senator but I am not going to sugarcoat Chappaquiddick.

17. On this issue, I'll take the side of the poor woman who drowned.
As opposed to the guy who left her there to die.
