Whistling in the Dark About Republican Chances to Re-Take the White House
Don't write off Mitt Romney as a threat. He's very polished and convincing. When he says he'll get America moving again, lots of people will believe him.

And don't laugh off Sarah Palin. She's nervy, and people like that.

Whistling in the dark is how assholes like Reagan and Bush were elected. It's not a good idea to get lazy.

2. Repubs are fearless...
in regards to their leaders. Sarah Palin and Newt Gingrich do not scare them. If you want to put fear in their hearts, you have to address them personally, not thru their candidates.

5. Hostile When Cornered
People are already tired of government's do-nothing response to the worsening economic situation. Republicans may attack Obama's timidity, the fact that he's not willing to try things. A lot of people are feeling cornered these days. They've got nothing to lose, and they're already worried about being out on their asses if nobody does anything.

Democrats are whistling in the dark if they don't heed Howard Dean's warning. Americans want something done.

8. Try Some Doors; See If They Open
There's a real danger of being perceived as too timid to do anything. That's when people start talking about limousine liberals; i.e., people who willingly put other people at risk but don't take any risks of their own. F'rinstance, why isn't there a jobs program - there ought to be. Are Democratic lawmakers afraid to piss off the bankers?

Issues don't have to be based on reality. Perceptions do nicely.

3. Bullshit.
I work in political advertising. Romney has served it up on silver platter. I can't wait to tango with this guy.

4. Romney is like fat-free milk--tasteless. He never
says what he will do as president. He just says that Obama isn't doing anything.

7. Americans Aren't Interested in Ideology
Americans have never been interested in ideology. It's never been about what a candidate says, only what a candidate seems likely to do. Romney's not dangerous because of his ideas; he doesn't have any. But he's still a threat to take the White House if the Democrats continue whistling in the dark. You and I wouldn't vote for an empty suit like Romney, but remember, people voted for Bush.

10. Bob Strauss' Warning
Robert Strauss, then the head of the Democratic National Committee, warned fellow Democrats about Ronald Reagan. "He's no joke," said Strauss. "He could actually become president."

14. Blanche Lincoln
Blanche Lincoln, the incumbent Senator from Arkansas, did not deserve to be re-nominated. She went on to be clobbered in the general election. But she did win the primary, largely because of the built-in advantage of incumbency.

This system of giving the incumbent the re-nomination by default is dysfunctional. We should replace it with something that places more of a burden on the incumbent not to alienate the base of the party.
