State Dems already planning for 2012 Walker recall

DINESH RAMDE | Associated Press | No Comments Posted | Posted: Sunday, June 5, 2011 7:24 am

MILWAUKEE - With recall elections for six Republican state senators all but certain, Wisconsin Democrats have begun focusing on their biggest foe - Republican Gov. Scott Walker.

..........................

"It's not just what his policies are," said Freeman, 43, of Madison. "It's the way it's happening - railroading people, meeting in violation of open-meeting laws. It's way broader than just collective bargaining."

...........................

Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett, who lost to Walker in the governor's race, told those at the convention Friday that they needed to be tireless in holding the GOP accountable for its agenda.

"This group of Republicans is drunk with power. They have sold out the middle class and Wisconsin values for a 12-pack of special-interest brew," he said. "Now is the time to sober them up."

Grand to see the WI Dem Party behind the recall effort which, legally, can begin in November.

1. Walker will be swept from office...as will the 6 Repukes.
THis was extreme as it gets in politics. The campaign said NOTHING of the policies to be implemented. Had Walker and the GOP run on collective bargaining removal and massive education gutting to fund more tax cuts for the rich.....not one Republican would of been elected.

2. Recalling Walker will not be a piece of cake. It will require a lot of hard work & determination.
It will require all Democrats and those who agree that Walker and his minions must go to participate and to vote. No excuses.

3. Hundreds of thousands of Dems will be removed from the voter rolls by then
Sadly, this isn't going to work, and then we'll be REALLY screwn.

4. yes, I fear
you are right. Many older folks, and folks who do not drive may* not be motivated to get their state ID's. They will be eligible to vote at the polls come the summer recalls but I think they have to show an ID within a week? I am not sure about that caveat.

6. Not true. They will be ASKED for ID but will still be able to vote without. Not provisional.

7. IDs will not be required this summer
That law doesn't go into effect until next spring. At that time, people without photo IDs will be allowed a provisional ballot and have to bring their ID to the municipal clerk by the following Friday to get their vote counted. However, that will actually help only people who have just forgotten their ID at home. Since the Real ID requirements will start in Wisconsin this summer (thanks, Rep. Sensenbrenner), the actual ID will no longer be handed over on the spot at the DMV but will be sent in the mail within a week or two.

And motivation may not be enough. They will have to provide a birth certificate to get the photo ID. Someone I know had to send for a birth certificate last year, and he needed to send a copy of his driver's license with the application. So for someone who has lost the original certificate, that's a Catch-22.

5. Uh, we have same day registration in Wisconsin. Oh, and we don't register with party.
Open primaries and stuff.

9. True, and luckily same-day registration survived
but the photo ID requirement will give the same result as taking them off the rolls, in many cases. Without ID, being registered is irrelevant--which some Republicans will also discover, and then we'll see what happens.

10. I agree. Gwen Moore nailed it at convention regarding Voter ID, but the claim that Dems will be
removed from the rolls is wholly impossible because we don't identify party.

11. Well then thousands of voters in DEM-LEANING AREAS
will be removed. Fer chrissakes, it's unbelievable how much people here like living with their heads in the sand. Do you really think the repukes are doing all of this voter suppression for nothing?

We still have same-day registration so they can "remove" people all day long and they can re-register on election day.

I agree that the GOP is trying to suppress votes but you're wrong about this "removal" theory. I don't have my head in the sand, but thanks for checking. I just know how we do things in this state a little better than you do.

Removing names would be ineffective here. In this state, they are using tactics like voter ID and caging:

http://news.firedoglake.com/2010/09/20/voter-caging-scheme-uncovered-in-wisconsin/

Wisconsin has same-day registration, so the issue here is not purging the voter rolls. Instead, the plan is to challenge particular voters identified by the right as not having a residence in Wisconsin.

You can read about the entire scheme and hear the audio at http://www.savewisconsinsvote2010.org/">Save Wisconsin’s Vote 2010. Basically, the Republican Party of Wisconsin would identify minority and student voters in Wisconsin using the voter file. Americans for Prosperity would send mail to this list “indicating the voter must call and confirm their registration information, and telling them if they do not call the number provided they could be removed from the voter lists.” This is untrue, and also could be illegal coordination between a state party and an outside group. But this highly mobile group of voters may no longer live at the addresses provided, meaning that the mail sent by AFP would get bounced back to them. Then, tea party affiliates would send their members as monitors to the polls on Election Day, with a list of individuals whose postcards were returned to challenge those voters at the polls. This is textbook voter caging, a technique Republicans have used in past elections.

8. No lie--this one will be the most difficult to accomplish.
It's going to require every ounce of effort the Wisconsin Democratic Party has because I guarantee you the Koch boys are going to pour millions into Walker's campaign coffers.
