Yokohama cop drowns after rescuing man (JAPAN)
The Yomiuri Shimbun

YOKOHAMA--A senior police officer drowned late Friday after jumping into a Yokohama river to rescue a drunken man, police said.

The man survived, as did a passerby who also jumped in to help.

According to the police, 40-year-old Masahiko Kaneko, an officer of the Kanagawa Police Station's Community Police Affairs Division, was found on the riverbed at a depth of four meters about an hour after the man, a 34-year-old company employee, was rescued. Kaneko was taken to a hospital but was pronounced dead.
