Republicans demand TV station yank ad claiming GOP plan would `end Medicare’
By Greg Sargent
Attention, people, this is important: The battle over whether it’s true that the Republican plan would “end Medicare” is about to play out in a critical way in New Hampshire.

The National Republican Congressional Committee, which oversees House races for the GOP, has written a sharply-worded letter demanding that a New Hampshire TV station yank an ad making that claim. Whether the ad gets taken down could help set a precedent for whether other stations will air Dem TV ads making this argument, which is expected to be a central message for Dems in the 2012 elections

<<<<snip>>>>

The Budget Resolution as approved by the U.S. House of Representatives does NOT end Medicare. In fact, the Budget Resolution makes no changes at all to Medicare for current or near retirees, as none of the Medicare-related provisions in the Budget Resolution would even take effect until 2022. This fact makes the Advertisement especially misleading, as the woman featured in the Advertisement is a current Medicare beneficiary, and would not have her Medicare benefits ended, or even changed in any way, under the Budget Resolution...

1. In all fairness, it is all in the wording.
You'll notice that virtually every other ad about the subject, and even the Dems themselves when they go on tv, always say "end Medicare as we know it" It isn't factual that the GOP budget will "end Medicare," so there is justification in their complaint.

I work at a big political agency...all of our stuff on this subject has to say "end Medicare as we know it."

However, I do agree that they will try to do more of this. They're scared to death of the coming campaign season and how Dems will hammer them on this. They're trying to change the message again.

7. You could continue to CALL it "medicare".. But if you're replacing
the current system with a coupon to go shop the private market with then Calling it medicare doesn't MAKE it medicare....

8. IMO, proposed changes are so radical, calling it 'ending Medicare' is justified. nt

10. yes, it's all in the words.
They are using Scientology methods of trying to discredit the Dems message, pick one little white lie or mislead and discredit the whole argument. In today's local paper there was an article, the headline said in essence that Democrats are Lying, then when you read the article, it's all in the words. Such as Debra Wasserman Schultz said, "They would take the people who are younger than 55 years old today and tell them: " You know what, you're on your own. Go and find private health insurance in the health care insurance market: we're going to throw you to the wolves and allow insurance companies to deny you coverage and drop you for pre-existing conditions. We're going to give you X amount of dollars and you figure it out." The repubs say that's a lie. Why? because they'll be able to pick an insurance policy out of plans that will be offered by Medicare. That's the lie?

Then at the end of the article (where many people will not even read, if they read past the title of the article at all) it says: The CBO said future retirees would pay more under Ryan's plan than if they went into traditional Medicare. By 2030, a typical 65-year-old would be paying TWO-THIRDS of his or her health costs. (note it doesn't say health insurance costs, it says HEALTH COSTS).

So maybe Dems should just change the words in their ads to say "BY 2030, A TYPICAL 65 YEAR OLD WOULD BE PAYING 2/3'S OF HIS OR HER HEALTH COSTS . Accenting the health costs part.

Can you imagine your parents or grandparents coming up with tens of thousands of $'s that late in life to pay for health care? Just for my mom's transfusions which she gets every other month it's $6000. a shot. Then think of yourself or your kids in the future with even more costly procedures and having to try and save that much more for their retirement? God, I know my daughter isn't going to be able to handle it and I'm too old to make much more money to leave her...Her old age is going to be terrible if this passes...everything including food, clothing and energy is going to be at least 3Xs more expensive by the time she gets old.

3. Current seniors will see changes under the Ryan plan

Under Ryan's plan, current seniors will experience 100%+ increases in their out of pocket expenses according to the CBO.

5. "If" something like the Ryan plan ever got through, seniors can bet their
last dollar they're coming for them next. Once the ball starts rolling it will cave in seniors, social security and what legislation Obama got through on healthcare for the rest. The republicans are intent on creating a form of dystopian society

The Ryan plan is just the tip of the iceberg as the US is converted to a complete sociopathic society. There are many that enjoy the pain and suffering of others just for the hell of it. We do not live in a healthy society anymore. I'm not saying there aren't good people anymore, but there is a hell of a lot of bad going on and some of the politicians of today are absolutely off their rockers. I still don't think a lot of Americans get what is going on. I know some of them.
