A passerby used a chunk of wood to fend off a vicious dog that attacked an elderly kennel owner Thursday.

Marcella Gilbert, 78, owner of Gilbert’s Boarding Kennels near 156th and Ida Streets, was attacked by an adult pit bull mix, said Mark Langan, vice president of field operations for the Nebraska Humane Society.

The 60-pound dog had been brought to the kennel by Bennington police in the past two weeks, and Gilbert had contacted Langan in an attempt to find the dog’s owners.

It was unclear what led to the attack, but Sean Vorel, a 27-year-old asphalt worker, described the scene he came upon as “the worst thing I’d ever seen.”

The kennel is located north of Stone Creek Golf Course.

Vorel was driving to Walmart to get groceries about 9:30 a.m. He realized there was trouble when he saw the shocked look on some golfers’ faces.

1. Shocked look on golfers faces? Why not use the golf club to fend off dog?

3. my thought exactly. those golf clubs would have made good
weapons . . . but you know that would have interrupted the golf game. :eyes: i wonder how long the golfers watched before the rescuer pulled up, parked and leapt the fence to help an old woman.

5. Now it doesn't even have to be a pit bull... just a mutt with possible pit bull blood in it.
sheesh.

7. Very sad, but it could just as easily be the "mix" part of pit-bull-mix that went berserk.
