And would you be willing?

I believe we need a whole new crop of Reps and Senators.

1. I could.
I have a PhD in history. I'm a woman. I was born in NJ (though I do not have a long form certificate, only a certification of vital stats). I now live in Oklahoma, a state desperate for voices of serious reason.
However, I would not subject my husband and family to the abuse that would be heaped upon them. I could deal with it with my usual wit. Oh, but I have a bunch of tattoos (all hideable-you'd never know I had them if I didn't tell you). That would disqualify me in the minds of many (including a bunch of folks on DU).

6. Thanks for the post. I understand and have concluded that one almost
has to be wealthy to run just to protect one's family and business, etc. There are so many who would harm a rational voice, imo. This is a real shame.

3. Do You Mean......

....... Someone not owned by lobbyist or corporate America???....do you really think that the DNC or RNC would advance a real outsider to the general election.... I don't.

7. I don't think they would either but the people still outnumber the powers
that be. Just to have a chance to speak and be on a ballot. Even if you had to speak from YouTube.

4. I'm sure there are many that can.
Maybe we should find some candidates in our states and get behind them.

10. Mebbe that could/would work......
....speaking for meself, I'd rather see your 'skeletons' before an election, rather than have to see them on the front page of DU/or the Daily What after you'd been in office for awhile.

Upfront skeletons!!! I'm all for that!

the boyfriends would come out of the woodwork. I wouldn't care, my family and husbands already know. But the Right would line up and call me harlot.

12. In 1998, I ran against the Republican Chair of Ethics Committee...
..during the height of the Lewinsky scandal.

At the time, that was Joel Hefley of Colorado.

I had never held any elected office before. I even won in a primary. Granted, Colorado Springs and El Paso County are not Democratic strongholds but I did as well as almost every other candidate that had run on the Democratic ticket. Tom Cronin, ex-Kennedy assistant and Colorado College professor, had gotten over 40% running against a rather unknown Republican in an open seat several years earlier. No Democrat has hit 40% again, as far as I know.

Some people wanted to know why I didn't run for school board or commissioner before running for Congress? I saw no rules that required that and it looks like professional politicians to me.

So, anyone can run. That does not mean you will win but if you live in a Democratic district, you stand as good a chance as anyone else. Look at some of the morons we have in Washington at the moment. Some folks here would be a big improvement.

And I might run for local office if I could. But I'm poor, nobody knows me, and I am kind of stuck abroad at the moment.

15. Well I've actually been asked.........
by folks on DU who don't have any more power to actually do it than I do. Plus I have the usual 60s skeletons, namely sex, drugs, and rock and roll. :)

I've actually thought about it, at least the opening salvoes os a campaign. And the ONLY reason I'd do it is to put the message out there, because there's no way that I could win. If I even became a threat with my message, I'd be in SERIOUS danger of assassination. Revolutionary Marxist and all that.

35. I'm glad that my possible assassination provides
you guys with amusement. Ever hear of Huey Long?

All I really said was that IF my message started getting popular, never saying that it actually WOULD, but if it DID, I would be in danger of assassination. I didn't even say I would be assassinated, just that the possiblility was there.

24. ask howard dean for help. dfa gets it done.
dfa is out there organizing and training, training people to work campaigns, to run for office, to pollwatch.

my local chapter of dfa, northside (of chicago) dfa is a force to be reckoned with. several of our local candidates have won.
their philosophy is to get progressive candidates elected up AND down on the ballot.
we are so mighty that howard dean is doing a small fundraiser for this chapter. :bounce: i get to go.

he is still out there, still giving them hell and still speaking for me.

25. maybe someday
However I'd prefer to run at the local, county, or state level.

I do enjoy the work I do behind the scenes on campaigns and my career as a campaign staffer. For now I want to stay there.
