"My Fellow Americans:
There has been a lot of political hot-air lately about cuts in Medicare and whether or not we should raise the debt limit. I have been charged as "demogoging" the issue by Representative Ryan from the other side.
The Republicans have been unwilling to compromise on anything that asks the wealthiest to pay more in taxes. Never mind that the top have done very, very well in the last decade while the rest of the country slides into an economic abyss.
The Republicans want to gut Medicare and kill it off in 10 years. It will no longer exist for anyone 55 years old or younger. It will be gone. That is their plan. That is a fact, not demogoguery.
But it doesn't have to be that way. We can take care of our elderly. If every other country in the world can afford healthcare for their citizens, then so can we. We will not throw them under the bus. I want the Republicans to listen and listen well.
You are not spectators in this sport about debt and deficits. We did not choose to spend the huge amounts spent in the last 2 1/2 years. We were forced to. Republicans spent as there was no tomorrow for eight years and their Vice-President said that deficits didn't matter. So they gave a huge tax cut to the wealthy that was not paid for and it did not pay for itself, contrary to their false belief in their misguided ideology. And they ran us off a steep cliff.
Now, it is hypocrisy of the highest order, to sit back and pretend that the debt was created by someone else other than the Republican Party. Look in the mirror. Look at the person that voted for the taxcuts. Look at the person that voted for trillions of dollars on unpaid wars and huge drug programs that were nothing more than big giveaways to the insurance companies.
We will work together or we will not work at all. I will veto any bill that cuts benefits to our needy and our elderly that continues to give taxcuts to those that do not need it and moreover, do not want it. We will not surrender to extortion. We will not play your game. It's time to stop the nonsense and return to reality."
