It's not exactly news that Michele Bachmann, the Republican congresswoman and likely presidential contender, is a kook of the highest order. After all, not so long ago she publicly sought assurances from Ben Bernanke and Timothy Geithner that they wouldn't ditch the dollar in favor of a foreign or global (as in, "one-world") currency. But it turns out she may be also be a full-on End Times crank. According to Mother Jones, Bachmann is a longtime associate of Jann Markell, founder of Olive Tree Ministries, an evangelical Christian organization dedicated to "interpreting current events from a Biblical perspective," who tells Mother Jones that "when it comes to interpreting the problems that surround America and the world.
has my perspective." That perspective would seem to encompass a belief that if the United States turns its back on Israel – say, by brokering a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict - "a curse" will be placed on the land (for which, see Genesis 12:3); and a conviction that, as she told Markell in 2004, "We're seeing the fulfillment of the Book of Judges here in our own time, where every man is doing that which is right in his own eyes—in other words, anarchy." All of which leaves MJ's Tim Murphy with the strong impression that for Bachmann "combating globalism and multinational diplomacy aren't simply planks in her platform; they represent mankind's last best chance at staving off impending doom."
