2nd report of hundreds of dead birds in Kentucky
http://www.fox41.com/story/13779745/dead-birds-appearing-in-kentucky

(snip)

On Tuesday afternoon, Fox 41 News spoke with Mark Marraccini, a spokesman for the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife. Marraccini confirmed that several hundred dead birds had been found last week near the campus of Murray State University.

He said the birds had been found "scattered round" several city blocks near the university, and included grackles, cowbirds, starlings, red-winged blackbirds and robins.

As with the cases in Arkansas and Gilbertsville, Ky., wildlife experts are at a loss when it comes to a cause.

Marraccini said authorities, "did a full toxicology screen and necropsy, and there was no poison, no disease, no trauma. There was really nothing they could put their fingers on that would cause the deaths."

1. It's the Rupture.
The True Christians™ are next. That is, if any such exist, in reality.

2. Been seeing the info and ideas about this.
Though some say it happens all the time, (which it may) it is odd that we are seeing so many close together in time. This one sounds like the strangest of the recent reports and includes several species.

Now, either this is just because people and reporters are paying attention, (and therefore filtering for information), or ...

Canary in a coal mine, comes to mind.

4. Sort of like the bees!
Lots of speculation and no explanation of the cause.

6. No such thing as a "full" toxicology screen... they tested for COMMON
toxins. Quite a difference.

7. What's the percent of oxygen in the air these days? Would a slight
decrease affect animals that burn a lot of oxygen?

Here's a 2007 thread from the Fortean Times discussion board:
http://www.forteantimes.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=1055926&sid=3974caa31996a1dbf2d65da4cb6f5b2e

They were discussing an incident in Australia that had been linked to lead dust from a mining operation, but then there was a second incident elsewhere with no clear explanation.

On edit: Here's another case from New Jersey in January 2009. The full story is only available from the paper's archive -- but from the headline, it sounds like the state government's claim that it was a deliberate culling program was not a definitive answer.

Dead birds by the hundreds, but few answers

Ten-year-old Skylar Venus was Rollerblading in her Franklin Township neighborhood over the weekend when she noticed a dead bird lying on the road. Then she saw another one. . . .

The Venuses' neighbors in the southern part of the township in Somerset County were having similar experiences beginning Friday night. Franklin residents said they believe hundreds of dead birds fell onto lawns and roads.

Standing in her Park Lane driveway, beside a dead bird, Venus pointed yesterday afternoon to houses where black birds with yellow beaks also lay dead. One neighbor even told her he had seen birds falling straight from the sky, their wings still as they came down like rocks. . . .

Last night, a spokeswoman for the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services confirmed the dead birds were part of a USDA program to reduce the European starling population. Donna Leusner said the state health department was not part of the culling program but had been notified of plans to feed the birds a "controlled substance."...

10. Link to a Weather Underground list of many more past incidents
I find it especially interesting that on two separate occasions -- in 1941 and 1970 -- thousands of birds crashed into the Empire State Building for no apparent reason.

11. It's a sign to not follow a leader or society to the point of crashing.
