Oklahoma man arrested in O'Hare gun incident

4:35 a.m. CDT, June 1, 2011

A 44-year-old Oklahoma man was arrested and charged Tuesday for carrying a loaded handgun in his carry-on while going through security at O'Hare International Airport, officials said.

Christopher Baldridge was arrested early Tuesday morning when airport security spotted a loaded gun inside his backpack, police said.

5. Seriously.
My husband is a white man who lives in Oklahoma (though he was born in NJ). He has a very white-bred name. He looks like a member of the IRA, according to friends' jokes. Would you have said the same thing about him? He's a staunch liberal (and doesn't own a gun, so this story would never apply to him).
I'm very close friends with lots of Democrats in Oklahoma who carry guns and own lots of guns. Doesn't make them any less of a Democrat than you or I.

Ahh, I love the smell of generalizing in the morning.

8. This isn't about responsible gun owners
This is about a stupid yahoo who has obviously been living in a cave for the last 10 years thinking he could bring a LOADED gun onto an aircraft. I also know many liberals who are gun owners.

10. But the only people whose stuff needs to be checked are the ones who look like terrorists

So, surely, we know who looks like a terrorist or someone on whom a terrorist has placed a weapon.

24. You have to be famous or well-connected in order to get away with that
DALLAS FOOTBALL COACH BARRY SWITZER (1997): "...I keep a gun for protection...And I keep it loaded...(in) a night stand...(My) son was...looking for some things...the gun...was in his way...and he set it on the bed. He found what he wanted, closed the door behind him and walked out...there (are) a bunch of people over...(including)...young kids...and there's a gun on the bed, so I throw it in my bag...The phone rings...I have a 10-minute phone conversation. And I never thought about it again until the cop tapped me on the shoulder at the airport..."

SEBASTIAN TELFAIR, PORTLAND TRAILBLAZERS (2006): "Telfair explained to local authorities that the gun belonged to his girlfriend and that he had inadvertently grabbed the wrong bag when leaving for the team’s road trip..."

SHAUN ROGERS, CLEVLAND BROWNS (2010): "(A) police spokesman...could not confirm reports that Rogers told police he forgot the gun was in his bag."

DAVID HUCKABEE (2007):, a son of Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee, was arrested at an Arkansas airport Thursday after a federal X-ray technician detected a loaded Glock pistol in his carry-on luggage...a one-year suspended jail sentence and ordered him into 10 days of community service which Huckabee can avoid by paying $100. Huckabee will be on probation for a year...

Usually they just confiscate things and they get tossed out. I would hate to have to clean up that mess.

Loaded. In his carry-on luggage. In this day and age. I'd call that VERY foolishly.

21. I went through the TSA when I came to Boston...
In Omaha, it was different than the changeover in Detroit...(had to do that nicotine thing outside, so double duty)

In Omaha, after the shoe removal, pocket emptying and host of other innocuous indignities I kept setting off the metal detector, even after I removed my belt. The only thing we could figure it was the rivet to the jeans the zipper is a copper alloy, should have been no problem. Well, they approach me with a wand, while holding up a good portion of the line behind me...Lo and Behold, the wand gets near my groin and goes off! The TSA guy scratches his head, and I matter of factly mention somewhat loudly, "Oh, those must be those stainless steel balls the Army said I had." There was a little old lady behind me that started laughing, and it went down the line...the TSA guy said, "I won't be messing with you partner".

It was nice to see people having a good time, even when being treated like cattle...:D

Detroit had the whole body scan thing, no problems at all.

As for the Baldridge dude...apparently he's pretty low in the gene pool. Some people are just plain stupid, this is a pretty hefty level of stupidity though. On the other hand, how did he get to Chicago from OK w/a loaded gun in the first place, or did he purchase it in Chicago? Bus, train, drive...if he flew, how did he get out of OK w/a firearm unless it was in checked luggage. Another thing that is odd, is that it was in a backpack. If you come across a situation where you may actually need said weapon, a backpack is a pretty poor holster...not many people who may harm you are going to let you rifle through your backpack...;)

22. TSA has a spotty record for finding contraband.
Edited on Wed Jun-01-11 08:36 AM by RC
That's why they make you take off your jacket or coat, so if you forgot your Glock in its holster on your hip, they have a better chance of finding it.

26. Like everything else, the devil is in the details....
things tend to look good on paper, once in practice though, the flaws become pretty obvious.

I've said time after time, that any engineer should have to use what they deigned before it goes to market. Just changing an oil filter has become a nightmare on some vehicles...:eyes:

27. The article doesn't say
But I think people are allowed to bring unloaded weapons in their checked baggage but not their carry on as this fellow did.

But I would like to know the answer to your question as well. Did they just wave this guy through in Oklahoma because he didn't fit the profile?
