A surgeon says an FIU student’s heart abnormality — and a speedy operation — were the only things that saved him after his girlfriend shot him on a dare

The bullet caused a blockage in the left anterior descending artery, the heart’s main artery, but because of his heart’s “very rare” structure, blood was able to flow through the opposite side of the artery ...

She hasn’t been charged because ... to be considered aggravated battery it would have had to have been unwanted. In this case, the victim asked for it, said Det. Alvaro Zabaleta, a Miami-Dade police spokesman ...

“Honestly, I didn’t think she would do it,” said Mendigutia, who changed his Facebook profile picture to show himself sitting up in his hospital bed. “I broke my No. 1 rule: Never point a gun at anyone. It was stupid.”
