Ok on these assults of maids
why do hotels let maids clean rooms with people in them? That seems inheriantly dangerous for the maids and just plain dumb. Why not have a simple rule, no cleaning rooms unless they are empty.

1. I've worked as a maid before
and it's because in some places the rooms would never be clean, since they never leave. In other places I've had the guest stand over me, watching each and every thing I scrubbed, ordering me about to do extra work.

Sometimes you'll knock, announce yourself, and there will be no answer. You enter and there is someone sitting there, waiting for you to enter. (One guy was nude, masterbating, offering me extra money to watch. Another offered money for additional services.) In those cases you back up and walk out of the room but if it's a suite with multiple rooms you might not know the person is there until it's too late.

2. It would be an easy to solve crime tho.
I'm sure thats why they believe it's safe, harming a maid would either be pretty stupid,or would require alot of planning to make sure the criminal isn't placed at the scene.

3. In quite a few hotels I've stayed they would not clean them if you were present. They
said they would come back. They also always left the cart in the doorway keeping the door open while they were cleaning. Generally I stayed in certain chain hotels, so maybe that was just the policy for them.

9. In the case concerning Strauss-Khan...
the maid is said to have entered the suite as a room service person was collecting dishes sent up earlier. She was told that the suite was unoccupied by the other worker. The suite in question is very large and L-shaped; Strauss-Khan was in the bathroom at the far end of the bedroom section. The Times has a diagram of the room which makes the above more understandable:

10. That seems impractical, but what if they worked as a 2 person team?

That way no maid would ever be alone in a room with someone.

It might even cut down on the time needed to clean a room since some things, like making a bed, go much more quickly with 2.

12. Time & money
Those maids are timed and have a certain number of rooms to tend to.

With an 11 AM check out, people often "check out" on their tv, so the front desk sends a "clean that room" message to the maid service....BUT as long as the person in the room does not attempt to re-enter with his now de-activated room key, he can stay there until he gets good & ready to leave or another person comes along with the "new" key...or until the maid comes along to clean. Most people have no desire to be there while the maid is there

The maid showing up to clean is the "signal" that the room is ready to re-rent.

I have stayed in places where maids worked in teams, but not very recently.. I suspect that cost-cutting has done away with that practice:(
