There's Something About Those Helmets...

ARLINGTON, VIRGINIA- MAY 29: Todd Palin adjusts the strap of the motorcycle helmet
of his wife, former U.S. Vice presidential candidate and Alaska Governor Sarah Palin,
before the pair jointed thousands of motorcycle enthusiasts and military veterans
participating in 'Rolling Thunder' rally May 29, 2011 in Arlington, Virginia.
Although not an official guest, former U.S. Vice presidential candidate and Alaska
governor Sarah Palin is expected to participate in today's motorcycle parade from
the Pentagon to the National Mall. (Photo by Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images)

20. Is this what you're referring to?
Freikorps belt-buckle (vintage 1919-1923). Not quite the SS, but give them a decade of economic depression and the "right" set of leaders . . .

30. The Nazis aren't the only people in history to produce helmets
The US military today uses a helmet that looks even more like WWII-era German helmets than these do.

31. In NYC, post 9/11, we've
had a variation on the same menacing theme, the helmet even more Nazi-esque, the officers dressed in black uniforms from head to toe, and prominently toting the cutest little machine guns. They're usually clustered in small groups of 3 or 4.

52. Must they be veterans to be there?
<snip> While many members of Rolling Thunder are veterans and many ride motorcycles, neither qualification is a prerequisite. Rolling Thunder members are old and young, men and women, veterans and non-veterans. All are united in the cause to bring full accountability for Prisoners Of War (POW) and Missing In Action (MIA) of all wars, reminding the government, the media and the public by our watchwords: “We Will Not Forget.” <more at link>

32. Not a chance.
They may pass a DOT or ANSI standard - But the Snell standard is very stringent, and these helmets do not have enough coverage (and likely not enough energy absortion) to comply with Snell M2010.

I was thinking DOT.

I don't know anyone who bothers with Snell-rated helmets unless they are off-road or racing. The damned things are just to heavy and don't look very cool.

27. Ahh, I see. Don't know how I missed it. We call them yuppie bikers.
I know them well. They're also real big into the H-D merchandise, trinkets and such. Their ( mostly foreign ) cars and SUVs are festooned with HD logos, as is about every article of clothing it seems. It's like the image of the Harley thing has a life of its own that probably eclipses the whole tangible bike and riding thing.

Funny how so many are hard right teabagger types that no doubt HATE the actual HD production employees that build their bikes.

50. I have a helmet that doesn't have a scratch or blemish on it. I bought
it at the same time I bought my 2007 1500cc Suzuki, in 2007.

I wear it every time I ride. I rode two hours yesterday, one hour today.

I clean and wax it.

I know many people who do the same. I know people who have replaced their helmets if they dropped them on a hard surface, just in case it might have gotten damaged.

18. Returning veterans encounter VA mental health meltdown
Tales of 3 Marines underscore court decision blasting 'unchecked incompetence' at agency

"...The stories of Hunt, Northcutt and Towers are not unique. Similar allegations are leveled in a lawsuit against the Veterans Administration filed by two veterans groups that argue delays in the process of evaluating and treating returning veterans with mental health problems are systematic.

‘Unchecked incompetence'
On May 10, a federal appeals court judge ruled in favor of the plaintiffs, ordering the VA to drastically overhaul its mental health care system and accusing it of “unchecked incompetence.”

In a 140-page ruling, Judge Stephen Reinhardt of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco said the agency was violating veterans’ constitutional rights by denying them guaranteed health care and benefits, citing the Constitution’s Fifth Amendment and its guarantee of freedom from unjustified governmental deprivation of property...

...The ruling accused both Congress and the Obama administration of failing veterans. “We would have preferred Congress or the president to have remedied the VA’s egregious problems without our intervention,” wrote Reinhardt. The scope of the problem also was highlighted in an April 2008 study by the RAND Corp.,which found that 18.5 percent of veterans deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan since 2001 suffered from PTSD upon their return home. Fully one-third were seen at a VA facility for mental health within one year, it said..."

A buddy of mine rides with a Wehrmacht style helmet that could best be described as a cheap piece of crap that is probably more fragile than a human skull, but at least it's visible enough to keep him from receiving a ticket.
