Student punished for spaghetti beliefs

A student has been suspended from school in America for coming to class dressed as a pirate.

But the disciplinary action has provoked controversy – because the student says that the ban violates his rights, as the pirate costume is part of his religion.

Bryan Killian says that he follows the Pastafarian religion, and that as a crucial part of his faith, he must wear 'full pirate regalia' as prescribed in the holy texts of Pastafarianism.

The school, however, say that his pirate garb was disruptive.

As it would be if he came dressed as a medieval monk, or as a grand imam.

I'm an atheist, and while I find the FSM a useful tool to explain my (non)belief system, the simple fact is full pirate regalia makes as much sense as the other two examples I gave.

I applaud this young man for trying to make a statement, yet I understand how school officials want to keep that statement from interferring with their primary purpose.

I was just remarking that it's generally so much better after anyone leaves high school in general and can be around more people who are generally more interesting.

If you're not aware - talk like a pirate day is a nationally celebrated day in the U.S. and some people like to recognize the day - it started b/c of a guy who challenged the teaching of creationism in schools by claiming the pastafarian version of creationism should be taught was well.

he's more like a trekkie - at least among those I've seen who dress like up for talk like a pirate day - but LOTS of people at Universities, as I noted, are aware of the tradition and the joke and are supportive of those who want to do this.

that's why I said he just needs to wait till he gets to college to find people who don't have a stick up their asses all the time - people who have a sense of humor - that sort of thing.

Does 'disruptive' mean 'the students were making so much fuss about his costume they not only couldn't concentrate on their schoolwork but it caused rioting and sex in the hallways'...or does it mean 'someone in the administration got their panties in a wad and decided it was 'disruptive' because we don't have a 'zero-tolerance' policy to fall back on and they actually had to THINK about something for a minute'?

Someone needs to sit down with this obviously bright young man and explain to him that his right to free expression ends when it starts depriving others of class time. He'll get it...doing stuff like this is how kids learn.

Bobby Henderson, wrote to the Kansas School Board during the height of the controversy over 'Intelligent Design' being taught in science classes. His letter, also published on his website, demanded equal time be given to the teachings of the Flying Spaghetti Monster as was given to ID and evolutionary theory.

Bryan Killian is a lot like any other 16-year-old. The North Buncombe High School sophomore enjoys music, computers and hanging out with his friends. But when he decided last week to come to school dressed like a pirate, his life took a decidedly different turn, placing him at the center of a whirlwind of controversy over freedoms of speech and religion.

At first, Killian wore both an eye patch and inflatable sword (the kind offered with a Happy Meal at McDonald’s, where Killian works). When school staff asked him to shed the swashbuckling regalia, he put the sword away, but kept the patch—and continued to wear it even after administrators told him not to.

Killian: It is a religion created {as} a reply to them trying to teach creationism and intelligent design in Kansas schools, and {it was} basically created to say, “If you are going to teach intelligent design, then you are going to have to teach way of intelligent design.” ... The FSM isn't going to "be" anything... this kid graduated (or failed to) two years ago.
