What do more people do: buy a house in a small town OR vote for a small political party?
A small town usually has a greater risk of an economic downturn than a larger population center. Thus, there's a risk of needing to move to find work, and of being unable to rent or sell the house. It wouldn't help you to share that circumstance with others; you would be competing with them in the market to rent or sell a house, and also competing in the local job market.

In contrast, it's unlikely that your vote will break a tie. It's even more unlikely that your vote will both break a tie, and bring into power a dangerous political party. If this very unlikely situation were to somehow arise, mass protests could remove a dangerous political party from power. Thus, it would help you to share that circumstance with others.

If people are selfish, then shouldn't it be harder to persuade somebody to buy a house in a small town than to vote for a small political party?

6. Let's see-
I live in a smallish town. I vote in said town.

My vote for local elections is more likely to be a tie breaker. My small town vote can be the beginning of preventing someone's career in politics in the early stages, before they get to a national level. We've had local elections with very close results.

9. This is why voting in school board elections is so vital.
It's one way to keep the crazies from beginning on their clown train journey, and another way of putting in place those who truly are public servants and have the community's best interests at heart.

10. Exactly,
though I don't think this is what the OP had in mind. In a small town I can actually meet the candidates. In a small town I also know who is or is not crazy and vote accordingly.
