50. Actually, quite a few motherboards come from Taiwan.

While I know China considers Taiwan to be part of its sovereign territory, Taiwan tends to have better working conditions and compensate their workers better than many of these Chinese sweat-shops. At the very least, they at least seem to recognize the problem in some of these factories and address it:

I'm not so much opposed to us using gadgets from China as much as I wish more pressure would be put on some of these Chinese companies to improve labor conditions. I just don't like the attitude of "Oh, everyone does it" or "You can't find any gadget that doesn't come from these conditions" because it just excuses these Chinese companies' behavior and allows the harsh conditions to carry on unabated.

I'm sure many of us would benefit from your research of devices that are free of these unacceptable aspects and thus meeting with all of our progressive principles. Please suggest, say four or five such gadgets, including perhaps a couple of cell phones, laptops or tablets, music related players or accessories, GPS units, camera/video, game players, etc. Please include a brief statement as to why the particular gadget is believed to meet those goals.

I look forward to your suggestions,as I'm sure do others here.

I'm not sure what their vetting process is, but it appears they have a decent electronics/entertainment section.

While it may be difficult to entirely eliminate ALL sweat-shop produced products of the whole supply-chain (including power adapters, etc.) from the final product, it doesn't hurt to minimize the harm.

Anything we can do to entice manufacturers to provide safe and fair working conditions wouldn't hurt.

I wouldn't mind paying a little bit more for my electronics gadgets if it meant giving me peace of mind that workers were being fairly compensated and conditions weren't so harsh. While I admit I haven't been very conscious of minimizing my sweat-shop footprint, as I do own a Toshiba net-book and other questionable products, I am trying to pay more attention now.

One of the considerations in my decision not to donate this time around was that the prize was of absolutely no interest to me. I have no interest in Apple's proprietary lock-in. Of course, the bigger factor was no room in my budget right now or I might still have donated but with no interest in winning the prize :-/
