Harold Camping flies the coop - THE LINK
I apologize to everyone who asked me yesterday for a link, and I couldn't provide one.

Well here it is: finally

MILPITAS, California (Isabelle Zehnder reporting) -- Harold Camping - the head of the Family Radio Broadcasting who claimed May 21, 2011, would be the day of the rapture - went missing when it was clear his predictions were incorrect, the International Business Times reports.

Camping estimated 200 million people would Rapture to heaven Saturday, and that those left behind would witness the destruction of the earth which would come on or about October 21, 2011.

Family Radio paid for thousands of billboards across the U.S. and in a number of locations abroad. Because Camping was certain “without a shadow of a doubt” that the rapture would take place Saturday, a number of followers were prompted to quit their jobs and use up their life savings in order to help spread the word about the upcoming apocalypse.

3. They should freeze his accounts since he won't be needing his illgotten
gains in heaven where he undoubtedly is hoping that people will think he has been taken.

19. He can afford to pass on the bank
Less then 2% of the booty is in banks. The bulk of the dough, valued between 75 and 100 million depending on market fluctuations, is invested in stocks and bonds. A very diversely invested portfolio, by some accounts.

I'd look for an old geezer carrying an attaché case at the airport.

5. If he's missing, and he's the only one who is, it's obvious...
...that he was the only person on earth worthy enough to go to God's Kingdom. :(

6. Old fart should be arrested and charged with fraud. A lot of people lost money because of him.
I know they did it voluntarily but it does seem that there should be some requirement for Camping to return some of the donations he received from gullible followers.

9. I agree. As much as I love to mock the fleeced, I do feel sympathy for them
People make mistakes, and "faith" can make those mistakes tragic and fatal

Some other idiot euthanized his two dogs.

7. He's not really missing.......
.....the RNC is qualifying him for a presidential candidacy. There seems to have been a sudden decline in the number of people willing to run for the GOP and they are now accepting walk-ins.

10. "Fleecing the flock," "a sucker born every minute," and all that...
I doubt that Camping broke any laws but he's still a predatory slimeball. As for the believers who forfeited their proverbial worldly goods, if they're at least a little wiser from the experience, then all was not lost, I suppose.

Moving on...

11. Your homework: Read about "The Great Dissapointment" and the Millerites
After TGD, many of the flock went on to found other cults and sects. And a bunch joined the newly established Mormon Church.

I wish they would learn from this, but I have no expectations they will.

17. They'll all learn something but it won't necessarily qualify as "wisdom," in every case.
More accurately stated, they won't all become "wiser," by my definition of the word or by yours. I guess that's what keeps things "interesting," shall we say? :hi:

22. And some of them
will see this as a "test" of their faith and believe even more in whatever it is they believe.

That's how my Fundy sister sees stuff like fossils and things.

God put 'em there to "test our faith".

yech.

18. the sects they founded were basically schisms -- no different from the schisms
that are a constant in other religious traditions. and weirdly, the schisms weren't all about interpretation of the non-second-coming.

i don't see much evidence of a mass defection afterwards.

Mebbe he was saying haven rather then heaven all this time.
So he may be in Dubai after rapturing himself to this tax haven with assloads of cash.

21. Because if there is a rapture anyone that dishonest is not going to be part of it.
And if there is a hell there must be a special place in it for people who use religion to fleece their flock.

Camping is one of these guys who takes "no salary", works as a "volunteer" but yet manages to have a pretty nice life.
