PITY THE POOR SYRIANS. They get death and torture cus the Powers don't need them
Edited on Sun May-22-11 09:29 AM by Distant Observer
Murder, arrests and torture of peaceful protesters go in Syria month after month. The massive inconsistency in US treatment of the Arab protest movement had stripped the US of all credibility.

Sadly, the President’s words are just mockingly dismissed in the region as they see stark contrast between the impotence in dealing with allied countries such as Israel , Saudi Arabia or Bahrain, and the rapid move to bomb Libya when an opportunity opened to solidify control of the largest reserves in Africa. THE HYPOCRISY AND DISINGENUOUSNESS IS BLATANT AND NAKED FOR ALL TO SEE.

Nothing has been done to develop any consistent and respected mechanism to mediate and moderate these conflicts in a non-violent way. The West has done little to truly support non-violence but rather has aggressively promoted the role of military force and militancy in the region.

Pity the peaceful protesters in Syria.

Syria's defiant women risk all to protest against President Bashar al-Assad

Women on the frontline of demonstrations against Syria's brutal regime are now being targeted by security forces
Peter Beaumont
guardian.co.uk, Saturday 21 May 2011 18.45 BST
They came for the men first, as the security forces of Syria's President Bashar al-Assad killed, beat and arrested people protesting against his regime.

Next, they came for the women of Syria's revolution. Despite the threats, however, they refuse to be silenced.

As the violence has become worse, women activists have organised a Friday protest of Free Women showing solidarity with those seized or killed. Women-only protests in towns across the country have led the effort to let the outside world know what is happening in Syria. But they are now being targeted as well, with the same lethal brutality.

Two weeks ago three women were shot dead at an all-women march near the besieged city of Banias. A week later human rights activist Catherine al-Talli, 32, was detained in the Barzeh district of Damascus after being forced off a minibus when it was stopped at a checkpoint by the secret police.

Syria: Rampant Torture of Protesters

HUMAN RIGHTS WATCH. APRIL 15, 2011

(New York) - Syrian security and intelligence services have arbitrarily detained hundreds of protesters across the country, subjecting them to torture and ill-treatment, since anti-government demonstrations began in mid-March 2011, Human Rights Watch said today. The security and intelligence services, commonly referred to as mukhabarat, have also arrested lawyers, activists, and journalists who endorsed or promoted the protests, Human Rights Watch said.

5. It is interesting.
I'm guessing that the capitalists and their defenders haven't figured an angle on Syria yet.

15. So you suggest the US or NATO start bombing Syria, too?
How many more countries while we're about it?

16. So you don't think the sanctions against Syria go far enough, then?
What more do you want? We know you oppose the military action against Libya. What are you asking for, for Syria?

17. Mechanisms in the UN to mediate have been perverted by the US rather than advanced
There is nothing good that he US can do at this point. Maybe Russia or China can credibly take a role with the regional interests engaged.

3. Some nations are more 'strategic' than others...
It's nothing new...FWIW there have been 3000+ killed in the Ivory Coast since last November, and that went almost completely unnoticed in the U.S. media...

13. The UN's successful involvement in Ivory Coast was largely ignored by the US media.
The UN put thousands of "boots on the ground" there which helped lead to the elected president being inaugurated yesterday.

The UN is in a much better position to be a "global cop" than the US or any other single country.

18. That involvement was careful, involved elections, and then measured support for the results
I was not blatantly motivated by imperial agendas.

7. There's no political upside.
Qaddhafi is Qaddhafi. Berbers? Clan conflicts? Eh. We have to mean business and be on the right side of history. There's an unambiguously feel-good war to be haD ON THE CHEAP.

But to unambiguously act against Syria in a meaningful way, and above all quickly, is to act against (a) one of those countries challenging the evil running sharks of Zionisn, (b) a kingmaker in Lebanon, (c) protector of the Alawite Shi'ites, and (d) an ally of Iran. Lt's not even mention the Palestinian "refugees" and Kurds.

8. K&R. And 3-2-1 before someone invokes the Muslim Brotherhood.
We have no interest in mediating. And the people need no mediation, they need us to get the fuck out of their way.

10. Agreed. That is the situation we have. The UN and Arab League has been so manipulated their is no
trusted mechanisms for honest mediation.
