Photo of the Day (JAPAN)

A man holds his dog at an animal shelter in Ishinomaki, Miyagi Prefecture, on May 19, 2011, before he leaves the facility for a refugee shelter he has been staying at after his house was swept away by the March 11 tsunami. "I feel so sad when I leave the animal facility and I apologize to my dog again and again in my heart," he said. (Mainichi)

A woman passes by rows of small statues of “jizo,” the guardian deity of children, at Zojoji Buddhist temple in Tokyo.

3. yes, thanks AsahinaKimi
for all of your posts and updates.

Now this is corny, but these photos remind me of an OLD song - bless the beasts and the children.
I feel for that man - he is doing what he has to do to survive but it breaks his heart to have to leave his dog behind.
Then of course we know that the children of Japan need guardians (or a guardian diety) more than ever - especially those orphaned.

4. Oh, that first photo and story of the man & his dog is wrenching...
I'm so glad they have each other, but can feel his pain from here... They need each other--and not just when visits can be arranged. My heart aches for them.

5. That top photo just gets to me.
The look in the dog's eyes seems to share the man's remorse and pending departure. Very touching...
