Senator McConnell Leaves House Republican Budget Twisting In The Wind - TheHill
Senator McConnell leaves House Republican budget twisting in the wind
By Alexander Bolton - The Hill
05/19/11 05:49 AM ET

<snip>

Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.) is leaving Rep. Paul Ryan’s (R-Wis.) budget plan to its own fate in the Senate by not whipping his GOP colleagues on the vote.

Republican senators say McConnell has made it clear he will vote for the House Budget Committee chairman’s plan, but has said rank-and-file members should vote as they want on the 2012 budget proposal.

Sens. Jon Kyl (Ariz.) and Lamar Alexander (Tenn.), the second- and third-ranking members of the Senate Republican leadership, say they will also vote for Ryan’s plan. But as for the rest of the GOP conference, “every senator will have to decide that for himself,” Alexander said.

House GOP Leaders whipped the vote on the Ryan budget, and it was approved with only four GOP defections. Every House Democrat voted against it. The decision to let GOP senators vote their conscience means there might be more “no” votes on the budget plan from Republicans in the Senate.

1. Come one now, if the GOP budget is popular, surely
you have not problem getting your party in line for it.

I hear that Scott Brown has hurt himself with his support for this budget.

11. Right
I thought that everybody (on the right) was saying how "bold" and "courageous" Ryan's plan is. Why is (virtually) nobody on the right willing to stand up and support it????? The Ryan budget is a teabagger's wet dream and didn't the 2010 election give the Republicans a "mandate" to implement "teabagger" policies that "the American people" allegedly wanted? C'mon! Why aren't they standing behind this?????? Maybe this isn't really what "the American people" really wanted after all? Or maybe it's just because the Republicans haven't sold it well enough. That's what Bush probably once thought about his Social Security privatization. One thing you can say without a doubt is that, whatever else "the American public" wants it's NOT cutting Social Security and/or Medicare. Yet the Republicans have now stupidly tried to cut both.

7. he said that about 3 weeks ago.
I got the impression that he held back because he feared some Dems would cross over and the damn thing would actually pass.

4. “every senator will have to decide that for himself,”
This is the problem
The parties exert too much pressure and then the people do not get represented

The parties act like terrorist groups

8. American political parties have amazing freedom to vote their "conscience"
Most countries don't. Usually, the party decides how everyone should vote. If they don't, they could face expulsion from the party.

That's one major difference between our two countries. The "party line" is strictly enforced. However, usually after an extended consultation.

5. Destruction of Medicare is the new conservanazi litmus test.
Let's see if the conservanazis have the balls to push it. Seniors aren't going to like it. If FUX news gets the old folks to believing it's a good deal, then they can probably sell them toxic waste as a formula for youth.

12. Anyone notice that not ONE of their presumptive punching bags...err, I mean
"presidential candidates", has actually stepped up to say what an amazing thing this Ryan plan is?

Newtie the Blowfish got drawn and quartered for slamming it, but I sure didn't hear an endorsement from anyone else currently holding office, or planning to hold one in the future...
