Hero saves jilted bride from suicide

A jilted bride-to-be tried to throw herself from a seven-storey building in China after her boyfriend called off their wedding.

The 22-year-old college student, named only as Miss Li, put on her wedding gown before stepping through the window of the residential building in Changchun, eastern China.

But before she plunged to almost certain death, care worker Guo Zhongfan caught her by the neck and held her as others rushed to help pull her to safety, MSNBC reported.

2. I couldn't help thinking
Seeing how he grabbed her by the neck, that it would be really bad luck if she ended up with brain damage from lack of oxygen.

3. He looks strong enough that the neck hold part would have been over fast.
Minute or two tops.

No brain damage, but she may spend the rest of her life as the brunt of Chinese redneck jokes.

:P

4. I heard an interview with Guo on the radio today.
He said she was pushing against the wall with her feet and he was afraid they'd both take the tumble. When he described his state of mind when he leaped to her rescue, it reminded me of what Arthur Schopenhauer described in "The Foundation of Morality" and written about by Joseph Campbell in his "The Mythology of Love."

How is it, he (Schopenhauer) asks, that an individual can so forget himself and his own safety that he will put himself and his life in jeopardy to save another from death or pain — as though that other's life were his own, that other's danger his own? Such a one is then acting, Schopenhauer answers, out of an instinctive recognition of the truth that he and that other in fact are one. He has been moved not from the lesser, secondary knowledge of himself as separate from others, but from an immediate experience of the greater, truer truth, that we are all one in the ground of our being. Schopenhauer's name for this motivation is "compassion," Mitleid, and he identifies it as the one and only inspiration of inherently moral action. It is founded, in his view, in a metaphysically valid insight. For a moment one is selfless, boundless, without ego.

5. I heard Campbell speak about that and the Hawaii incident in the Moyers interview. Riveting stuff.

6. NO man is worth killing yourself over.
Not criticizing her, just saying that people put too high a priority on finding The One. 22 years old...her whole life is ahead of her, and she'll meet many guys. No doubt, one of them will make her wonder why the hell she pinned so much of her life on this one jerk.

7. You know why she didn't know that?
Because she's 22. And she's a young woman in China.

10. My daughter once said that she knew she had found the right man when she got married, because
when she looked back at her past relationships, they seemed completely trivial compared to the one she had with her husband.

13. How do you know he's a jerk?
Maybe he's wise to get cold feet over someone this unstable?

8. Inspirpiring. A real hero.
That young lady might think her world was ending, but she'll soon understand how lucky she was that such a man had the strength and character to save her from such a foolish impulse.

11. That is one of the most dramatic photos I've ever seen.
Wow, this guy is amazing...If this were a movie, the jilted bride and her rescuer would get together. :)

12. Filthy bastard.
Exercising his dominant male rights over this poor woman. Just trying to seduce her.

I only hope he was wearing a condom.
