Rep. Giffords has successful surgery to repair skull

Bless her heart.

Doctors used a hard plastic implant to cover a hole in Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords' skull on Wednesday, the latest milestone in her recovery from an assassination attempt and a procedure that experts say will improve her quality of life.

A gunman shot her in the head more than four months ago in Tucson, Arizona, and doctors had to remove a portion of her skull to relieve pressure on her brain.

On Wednesday, she underwent the surgery to cover the hole, according to a statement from TIRR Memorial Hermann hospital. The hospital planned a briefing on Thursday to give an update on her medical condition and discuss the next steps in her rehabilitation.

3. Good for her!
I saw earlier this morning that she was going to have the surgery.

The good news is that we're now into basically cosmetic stuff, as surgery goes. She's making a blistering recovery compared to my mother's TBI that she had about 17 years ago. Giffords is younger than Mom was, and therefore should recover faster, but this is still phenomenal compared to my experience with my mother.

I am so happy for her that she got to see her husband go off to space and that she's doing so well. I couldn't be more proud of such a fine, strong American and Democrat!
