Hungry eagle inadvertently swoops toy poodle away to better life
Hungry eagle inadvertently swoops toy poodle away to better life
By Gerry Bellett, Postmedia News May 18, 2011

She's a vagabond toy poodle, named May by SPCA staff because earlier this month she fell out of the sky and landed in the grounds of Sechelt's Shorncliffe Nursing Home.

How she came to be flying over the nursing home is explained by the deep talon marks in her back and sides, showing she was probably the unwilling passenger of a hungry eagle that had picked her up but eventually found her 18 pounds too much to hold on to.

May, her ribs broken, her body lacerated, was found by nursing staff May 2 and delivered to the Sunshine Coast SPCA.

The fall injured her, says BC SPCA official Lorie Chortyk, but the whole unnerving ordeal likely saved her life.

16. Rapturing disrupted.
All eyes were rapt on the scene of the falling dog, her former life ruptured.

11. This scares me
Lots of eagles where I live and am always worried about them taking my cat - she's only 7 pounds. Would keep her in but she would go nuts. So I will go nuts instead.

22. Keep her in. She'll get used to it.
The lives of indoor/outdoor cats on the whole are so much shorter than those of only indoor cats. There are so many hazards out there: not just eagles but also hawks, coyotes, stray dogs, other cats carrying diseases, raccoons, foxes, poison put out for rats, traffic, sadistic humans who like to kill, thieves who know there's a lucrative market in "no questions asked" animals for experiments....

How is that worth the risk? Never mind the damage that cats, who are natural hunters and obligate carnivores, do to native bird species.

23. We have hawks around here that will snatch a cat if they see one, so I keep my cats indoors--
except for my 18 1/2-year-old Lila. I often sit outside with her so she can lie on the porch in the sun and cook her old, achy bones.

We also have foxes and coyotes who sometimes steal people's small pets if they leave them outside.

13. According to the news here in BC, the cutie was saved as the Eagle
could not hang on to her anymore. Poor thing, she cannot be a stray as poodles are not in shelters here. Most likely, she was from a puppy mill! Am glad she was saved and I donated to get her teeth fixed.

The things humans do to pets is unbelievable!

...they used to bring a trained falcon to fly around Bryant Park and scare away (or eat) the rats. Worked great until someone brought in a chihuahua...
