Sometimes the most qualified don't get the job (I have applied officially for a new job)
Edited on Wed May-18-11 09:25 PM by Omaha Steve

Today the Vice President of my local union was granted a disability pension for medical reasons. There is a year and 1/2 remaining on his term. I feel I am the best qualified candidate for the job. But politics can do funny things.

In the 3 way race for the job in the summer of 09, first place got 63 votes. Second place got 61. Third got 59. I missed the run off election by 2 votes. Five people in my shop didn't vote. :-( First place lost the run off election by 1 vote, even though I endorsed her. Some men just don't want to vote for a woman.

Anyway my name is in the hat. It is not an increase in pay like it would be for most of the others that want the job. It is Monday through Friday salaried. Since we cover half of Nebraska there is travel and late nights. It's the grunt work of organized labor. I would love it. I'll have some very good written endorsements behind me.

The Executive board (all elected) will make the decision on the person that finishes the term. I have no idea yet who else will put their name in the hat. As soon as there is a chosen replacement, I'll be sure to post win or lose.

Omaha Steve A.K.A. OS

P.S. The conservatives in Nebraska are going to try to end all public unions at the ballot box. There is a better than 50-50 chance I will have to go back to my current job in Dec. of 2012 should I get the VP slot.

9. I've been told several times that I'm "overqualified" - a code word for "beyond salary cap"
Every time that's happened, it was before I was even asked about the salary I expected. "Too much experience" can be a disadvantage. The only reason an employer asks what salary you expect is because there's a chance you will low-ball it to get the job and they can save money. I've hired a lot of people and the bean-counters always set the range for the position. You have to pull teeth to get it increased for a candidate you really want. You can scan a resume (by eye, not a scanner) and have a pretty good idea what the expected salary for a candidate will be.

10. LBN has the story my union will not have to be approved by Ne voters

Had I known last night a deal would be reached, I would have waited to post about my applying for the VP spot.
