Illegal Students Worry About Going To College
MABLETON, Ga. -- Watch Now Students at Pebblebrook High School in Mableton took a stand against laws targeting illegal immigrants on Tuesday.
A group of students, some legal, others illegal, walked out of class in protest of House Bill 87.
"I just want to be successful, and accomplish my ambitions and dreams," said Rolando Xenteno. "I want to be great. I want to be a productive citizen, a productive American citizen. I consider myself an American. People don't consider me American, Mexicans don't consider me to be a Mexican. I don't know what I am. I am stuck in that boundary, I am confused," Xenteno said.
House Bill 87, signed into law by Gov. Nathan Deal, will go into effect on July 1. The new law allows law enforcement officials to check the status immigration status of criminal suspects. And it requires all businesses in Georgia with more than 10 employees to register for E-Verify, a federal database that checks an employee's immigration status. Student protesters said HB 87, coupled with a decision by the Georgia Board of Regents last year, is making it nearly impossible for undocumented students to attend higher education.
