Willie Nelson’s Teapot Party backs Republican Gary Johnson for president

The Teapot Party, founded by country singer and activist Willie Nelson, has officially endorsed former New Mexico governor and current Republican presidential candidate Gary Johnson.

"I am truly gratified to have the endorsement of such an iconic entertainer, philanthropist, innovator and champion for individual rights as Willie Nelson," Johnson said in a statement issued by the group. "Not only is he a superstar talent, he is a bold advocate for social change. Americans are demanding the freedom and opportunity to pursue their dreams without interference from a heavy-handed government, and Willie Nelson lends a tremendous voice to those demands."

Johnson, who announced his candidacy in April, is best known in recent years for his outspoken opposition to drug prohibition. The ex-governor also supports same sex marriage and withdrawing U.S. troops from Iraq and Afghanistan

At the Fox News Republican debate in South Carolina two weeks ago, Johnson noted that half of the money spend on law enforcement and prison is drug-related. Ninety percent of the "drug problem" is caused by the prohibition of drugs, not their use, according to the former governor.

2. I do not blame him. On the cannabis issue Obama has proven to be
very disappointing if not an outright liar. Holder is an absolute ass about it.

If democrats would support sensible cannabis re-legalization they could sweep the elections.

I think he's running for the wrong party. He's more liberal than some of the Dem establishment!

7. If you are a one issue voter, and pot is your issue, Johnson would be your guy
But most voters are more mature than that.

26. I would venture to say that most republicans in office
were put there by one issue voters with that issue being either abortion, gun control, or gay rights.

Mature voters?? NOT!

9. Like most libertarians, Johnson is right on a few issues, and dead wrong on most
I love Willie Nelson, and this won't change that, but he's looking at Mr. Johnson by focusing on just a few issues instead of Johnson's wider right wing/libertarian orientation . I speak as a very slight acquaintance of Gary Johnson ,and I like him personally. One other thing that differentiates him from most repubs is that he is pretty much a straight shooter, and a couple of friends here in NM , who are in one case a former, and the other case current, very liberal public officials have both told me that the one thing they respected about Gary is that he never tried to bullshit them. But at the end of the day, he IS a right wing libertarian, and like a less insane and non-racist Ron Paul, he is anti worker, anti unions and anti most things that progressives stand for. A basically good decent man but with a generally right wing ideology (with some notable exceptions) that I can't believe any progressive could logically support.

13. So, while he works to make your life shitty, he'll still let you take solace...
... in the arms of your same-sex spouse while you self-medicate your misery by smoking pot.

23. Huh? I'm assuming (?) you meant this as a reply to someone else or the OP
My post was an attempt to advise people to NOT support him. Just because of a couple of issues that we progressives agree with, it is important to realize,as I pointed out, that he is very right-wing .

11. A country star supports something horrible?! Who could have guessed?
Sarcasm. Country music is terrible, and those who create it should be punched in the little toe. BAM! Take that little country star toe!

14. As Republicans go, he wasn't a bad governor. He didn't do much damage
in other words. He also had the guts to speak out against the drug war while he was in office.

That's why he doesn't have a chance of gaining the nomination.

I wouldn't brag too much about this endorsement (even though I love his voice and music).
