How do we destroy the blue dogs?
These guys have been the thorn in our side ever since I can remember.

They are the "democrats" who bolted from the party when they learned they might have to share some of that wealth and power with African-Americans

They were the "reagan democrats" who sold out our party to a hack actor and a spook

They were the "Clinton Democrats" who pushed "tough on crime" policies, let the prison industrial complex take shape and bombed the shit out of Iraq on an almost daily basis

They were the Joe Liebermans, the Zell Millers, the Rahm Emanuels

They were always carrying water for corporate America first, the American people, last

We need to find a way to eliminate them - and not just marginalize them and destroy their careers, but make an example of them so three new heads don't grow in the severed one's place

In short, we need to take away what they most value in the world: money

We need to bankrupt them. Stigmatize them. Destroy their 'thousand dollar plate' fundraisers.

We need to make them bankrupt

We need to find any and every method to put them and their families out on the street, just as they have done to so many American families so far

The GOP? They're crazy and are eating their own.

The real threat is the Blue Dog

He is OUR enemy

1. i've been thinking
that repubs will eat each other, die off by attrition -- then blue dogs become the opposition to democratic party ... a somewhat strange theory, but maybe? kind of like the crazies move out and the right of center becomes the next party of the right? sort of self correction?

3. It may involve some time in the wilderness. The party will drift further right, lose another

election and then remember that its base is composed of progressives, gays, immigrants, feminists, academia, unions, etc.

I think the current strategy of trying to sway the right-leaning independents away from the Tim Pawlenty/Mitt Romney ticket will probably win Obama a second term... but the long term consequences of capitulating to the right aren't very promising. We may have a "President Palin" in 2016.

And if his district goes in that direction, maybe we need to engage in some shenanigans, you know what I mean?

In the end its all about GOTV. Liberals would rule this country with a recycled iron fist if we just got out the vote...and made sure other's didn't

100. i agree. but thinking we can just throw up liberal candidates in these areas and win in an
instant gratification mindset that does not work.

the republicans spent 30 years working from the ground up, from dogcatcher to school board, to city councils, all the way to the senate, shaping the minds of the red state voters.

just putting up a liberal candidate in areas where the very word liberal is an insult, isn't going to work.

we've been fighint a political battle in these states where it should have been an ideological one. you can't change the mindset of a state or region in one election cycle and have it stick.

33. here's the thing, that's what we need to do. but you can't do it without years, maybe even decades
of groundwork. people like the OP think that the entire country is super liberal and you could run kucinich in oklahoma and win. they'd rather put up liberal candidates that'd get slaughtered in an election than to fight the ideological battle the repukes have been doing for the last 30 years. from school boards on up, they shaped the views of the electorate.

it'll take a lot of work and time to change the mindset of red state voters to be open to liberal candidates and ideas. the instant gratification folks just can't grasp that.

29. rather than working on promoting a liberal ideology in conservative areas you'd rather have less
Edited on Tue May-17-11 12:49 PM by dionysus
democrats.

what a fucking brilliant way to reach a majority.

your focus should be on changing the mindsets of voters so you can elect a kucinich or a russ in a red, not focusing on how small you can make the democratic caucus.

i swear if you guys were in charge you'd manage to make the democratic party an unelectable fringe party within a week.

54. So, you'd like them to become Republicans then?
Edited on Tue May-17-11 01:55 PM by brooklynite
There's a reason the Republican's have been shrinking into an arch-conservative southern white male party.

There ARE moderates in the world. Absent a "Moderate Party", they can choose between Democrats and the Republicans.

You want to force them out of the Democratic Party, so they'll go the Republicans.

We'll have fewer votes, they'll have more.

(here's where you tell me "if we had 'real' liberal candidates, we'd attract more progressive voters"; the Republicans have been saying the same thing about conservative voters for years)

55. Plus, people who have recently switched from repub to Dem
are going to be rather conservative for a while. As time passes they'll become more liberal. We certainly don't want to destroy them. We want to educate them and welcome them

77. There's nothing moderate about where this country is and has been heading.
The comparisons are also bad. There are no Republicans currently that would vote for anything resembling progressive or liberal but there are always enough Democrats that will vote for conservative ideology to the point it makes real or fundamental change impossible.

57. Why fight within our own party
Look if you want to bring an incumbent Blue Dog down there's a time and place for it--- the primary.

But instead of focusing on destroying Blue Dogs, how about we focus on destroying Republicans?

66. I had thought that you largely already had done that in the 2010 election, remember?
And now in 2012 there's supposed to be a big progressive onslaught in Congress where these blue dogs are replaced; let's see if that happens.

92. UNREC!!!
"Destroy?" That's what Repukes do. We have to attack, attack, attack, BE AGGRESIVE IN OUR ARGUMENTS.

But "destroying" is just gonna contribute to the GOP-led dismantling of our Republic.

to be more liberal by discussing the issues with them in a civil manner. After all, we have the facts on our side. I agree that we need to be more aggressive or passionate in our approach.

104. haha - we can't even beat the Repubes.
That's why we can't beat the "blue dogs" - they speak for a certain percentage of the population just like the Repubes do. You can't destroy them because there will always be different levels of Dem or Repube that cover the entire political spectrum.
