PETA pushes for anti-dissection ads in Pa. school
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20110513/ap_on_re_us/us_school_dissection_ads

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – A national animal rights group has offered a cash-strapped school district an undisclosed amount of money if it allows ads in school promoting alternatives to animal dissection.
....

The group recently sent a letter to Superintendent Nicholas Lazo Jr., offering to pay money if the school allows the posting of ads that say, "STOP SCHOOL VIOLENCE. DO YOUR HOMEWORK - CHOOSE NOT TO DISSECT." Different versions of the ad feature rats, frogs and fetal pigs.

"We believe it is inappropriate for a school district to subject students to any such advertising," Lazo said in a statement, adding that PETA is "not the first entity to offer to provide something of value to the district in exchange for advertising access to our students."

Lazo also said Kutztown already makes available to its students "a computer-based dissection option that we have found to be very successful."

This week, amid community protests, the school board approved a $28 million budget that calls for the elimination of nearly 13 teaching positions.

1. Hey now...if we don't get to cut up frogs in biology...how the hell
will we ever learn about the disgusting, squishy parts inside our own body? Books with pictures you say? Hurummph!!!

4. Too bad they can't spend their time usefully, such as on enema rights.

3. It would be inappropriate to put up advertising that is grisly-
for the shock factor. Dissection is useful--looking at an anatomical diagram is a generalization of actual parts. It is only through dissection that one gets any idea of what's really going on in there. I dissected a cat, and a dead dude, and they look nothing like the diagrams. I would rather that dead cats end up in a learning environment rather than a dumpster. They are going to be killed anyway-as things are right now.

6. I am glad they are resisting any advertising at all.
That would open a very uncomfortable door.

10. To be sure-
this door has been opened in many districts. Our school-(early 1990's) had adverts for some movies and Pepsi. Mild in comparison to this. I can just see Prolifers' adverts up in schools-pictures of embryo parts in closeup, etc. It is a door that should be shut and double-bolted.

7. And again, PETA proving that left-wing crazies are no better than right-wing crazies

PETA is a menace to society.

neighborhood group because the city claimed it didn't have the money to buy new equipment. PETA came to the group and offered to buy a whole new playground as long as they could plaster their kid-oriented crap all over the equipment -- stuff showing pictures of obese children and blaming it all on eating animal products. It was horrid. I was so happy the group turned them down.

Fortunately, the group ended up raising enough money for excellent equipment without ads and so the story has a happy ending.

11. Of course, because we certainly don't want to encourage our
future doctors and surgeons to learn biology.

My anatomy dissections in high school were very helpful to me. Later, when I was field dressing a deer, I knew where the parts were, and avoided cutting the bladder and ruining some of the meat. Besides, I gained a great perspective into the workings of my own body. Learning is good. Cutting up dead animals is survival training.

Looking at pictures doesn't work nearly as well.

PETA is an ass!
