WTF of the Year: Disney Trademarks Seal Team 6
http://www.mediabistro.com/fishbowlny/disney-trademarks-seal-team-6_b35689

In a perfect example of a big media company looking to capitalize on current events, The Walt Disney Company has trademarked “Seal Team 6,” which also happens to be the name of the elite special forces team that killed Osama Bin Laden.

The trademark applications came on May 3rd, two days after the operation that killed Bin Laden… and two days after “Seal Team 6″ was included in thousands of news articles and TV programs focusing on the operation.

Disney’s trademark applications for “Seal Team 6″ cover clothing, footwear, headwear, toys, games and “entertainment and education services,” among other things.

You can read the actual applications here, here and here.

3. In theory, this is kind of smart...
Because "Seal Team 6" has been a frequent feature in first-person shooter video games, and as we speak Hollywood is cooking up some movie scripts. Whether or not Disney makes the movie, they could really cash in...

In reality, video game programmers and movie studios will just use another name...

6. Ick. Reminiscent of that group
of businessmen who bought up the rights to the phrase "Let's Roll!" after 9-11. Cold and cynical, capitalizing on grief and terror.

10. I do hope they paid a substantial licensing fee.
Otherwise, we might have to ask their permission to refer to Seal Team Six.

Think they'll make a dead Osama doll?

13. Disney could produce a documentary examining the difficult issues regarding "the war on terror"
Oh, wait, that's PBS' job. Now back to George Stephanopolous repeating this week's partisan talking points.

14. First off.
Bobby Jindal took his family to Disney land, after the less then stellar speech he gave, so it has been in a certain stream for awhile.

And if you think the metaphor has anything to do with the company, or some CEO at some company, you don't understand.

What did he do, he took bad stories, and found a way to tell them better, with song, and morale tales of better ways for people to act. Sounds like a good thing to me.

And the Mouse That Roared, and Mice in Wizard of Oz, could be what that is all about, not the company Disney. The company Disney, is not the same thing as the many things done by Disney, or groups like Disney.

If you can't see that, you are not seeing it.

15. Got to indoctrinate those kiddies at a young age,
Drill it into their head that violence and killing is thrilling, romantic and good. It's the American way, American as GI Joe.

17. While I kinda wish I had thought of that, I can see why they did it

and blame this entirely on the laws that allow this

They are playing within the rules of our screwed up system.

Now they get to make the movie and nobody else. This is a brilliant maneuver and I can respect the intellect that recognized the opportunity while still condemning the system that allows it.
