Edited on Sat May-14-11 01:26 PM by vard28
"Does spelling count?" Well, DUH! If I'm going to teach it, you're going to learn it the correct way. I want to scream when I hear other teachers tell their students that spelling doesn't count. It's only history class, no need to learn how to spell the states correctly, right? :wtf:

Cripes, edited for spelling! LOL!

4. Can't blame Obama and Arne for it then.
Maybe our educational system has always been pretty mediocre, but better than none at all.

6. Who said I was?
What kind of a statement was that? The Republicans are doing everything they can to dumb down the system, and if you possibly read how they are trying to eliminate reading initiative in the budget, maybe you'd understand, but no, you decided to take a shot instead....

10. Seems to me like most of the animosity of teachers is aimed at Obama nowadays.
There was a post earlier about how the NEA should withhold their endorsement of Obama. I didn't notice education as much of a topic here til Obama and Arne came along.

31. i'm not accusing you of anything but using a neolib meme. i make no speculation
about your motives for doing so.

as i said when you pm-d me, people use neolib memes unthinkingly all the time, thereby helping to catapult the neolib propaganda.

"dumbed down schools" = a neolib meme. it's one of those propaganda memes we're blanketed with so long that it becomes truistic.

but it ain't true.

23. Kind of reminds me of the people who take any criticism of the US as being anti-american
"I think we should fix ..." = "I absolutely hate ..."

I guess you're right though. Our schools are perfect and we have no reason to make any changes anywhere.

Ranking near the bottom of first world countries in education is a desirable thing.

Edited on Sat May-14-11 04:50 PM by Hannah Bell
promulgated for the purpose of ending public ed.

the us is not "near the bottom of first world countries in education".

despite the constant flogging of studies which purportedly say so.

are an attack on educators just as much as posts about "autoworkers whose high pay is destroying the us auto industry".

and "welfare queens," "bleeding heart liberals," & the rest of the pantheon of cardboard neolib talking points.

13. Spelling does not seem to be taught any more in
schools, so far as I can tell. The principal of my kids' grade school actually defended the lack of systematic spelling because, one, she herself was a poor speller, and two, so many English words have spellings that violate the rules.

The first reason is an appalling excuse, and as for the second, about 85% of all English words do follow rules, and it's a really good idea to teach those rules, to teach spelling systematically. Yeah, we do have a LOT of odd rules, and we do have a lot of exceptions, but if you teach the rules you have a basis to start with.
