Rangers forward Boogaard dead at 28

NEW YORK (AP)—New York Rangers enforcer Derek Boogaard(notes) was found dead Friday in his Minneapolis apartment. He was 28.

The team announced Boogaard’s death on Friday night, but gave no details.

The Star Tribune newspaper in Minneapolis first reported Boogaard was found dead in his home by members of his family. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s office in Minnesota confirmed those details and said an autopsy was pending.

2. I saw this late last night, couldn't believe it

Derek was a class act. Very involved with charities off the ice. I was reading comments on Twitter today, his teammates from NY, Minnesota and players from around the league have all had great things to say about him. He'll be missed. Rest In Peace.

"Boogaard was active in a number of charities during his NHL career. Last season he started "Boogaard's Booguardians," where he hosted military members and their families at all Rangers home games. He also was active with the Garden of Dreams Foundation as well as the Defending the Blue Line Foundation, a non-profit foundation that ensures children of military members are given the chance to play hockey."
