Surprise amendment stuns (MN) Senate during debate over health care for poor
Surprise amendment stuns Senate during debate over health care for poor
By Doug Grow | Wednesday, May 11, 2011

....

Sen. David Hann, R-Eden Prairie, introduced one of the GOP's plans for cutting Human Services costs by taking about 15,000 single adults out of MinnesotaCare and giving them vouchers so they can buy their own health insurance.

Hann sang the praises of the bill: It will save the state money. It will give the poor more choices. It will improve the health care of the poor. It will get government out of health care. It's the American way!

Then, Sen. Barb Goodwin, DFL-Columbia Heights, rose to speak. She offered a simple amendment to this GOP plan.

She said her amendment would require legislators to test the plan for two years, before the poor were forced into it.

"I hear what a wonderful deal this is for people," Goodwin said. "We can determine if this plan is working as it should."

Amendment greeted with silence

12. Franken did something similar in the US Senate - seconding a proposal by a Republican
that would have required lawmakers to live by the same health insurance as they were providing for people.

Franken seconded it, saying that lawmakers shouldn't have better health coverage than their constituents!

18. The article is excellent reading.
She puts the Republicans on the record as a bunch of hypocrites. One of them says the amendment is bad because she wouldn't be able to afford it?

But it's ok to take 30,000 of the rolls and put them on a voucher system that will drive them into bankruptcy after their first medical emergency?

59. Senator Linda Berglin (DFL) District 61 Was the one who said she could NOT afford it
And Senator Linda Berglin's statement was aimed at the REPUBLICAN Senator that had attacked the plan because the GOP Senator had opt out of the Medical Plan for the Minnisota Legislature. In effect Senator Berglin attack was NOT on the proposal itself, but the whole concept of forcing ANYONE to use Vouchers as opposed to fee for services.

More on Senator Berglin:
http://www.senate.leg.state.mn.us/members/member_bio.php?mem_id=1005

Thus the statement that "I can't afford this kind of plan for my family." was an attack on the GOP Senator Hoffamn whose attack on the proposal was based on her opting out of the state plan, not any support for the GOP plan to put the poor on vouchers only.

Senator Hoffman:

19. Am I the only one who sees the irony here?
because the exact same tactic could be used by RWers in the U.S. Congress about the Affordable Care Act. They could say that members of Congress should go on it for two years before ordinary Americans are forced into it. I'm guessing there would be no takers.

25. They say they want small government but it is still the same government but with less
money to give. Small government I would think means the government gets out of the people's business. It is quite obvious that they just want to take money away from the people and still keep the government just as intrusive.

It is all about the money.

49. Damn right
How to FIX social security and Medicare once and for all? Put every Senator and Congresscritter on it. STRIP them of their publicly-funded health care and their publicly-funded retirement and cut their pay in half.

That's how the rest of us have to live. FORCE THEM to rely on the same programs we do to survive in old age and have health care.

Those programs would be a) protected; and b) FIXED so fast your head would spin.

Senator Barb Goodwin is correct. Make legislators eat the dog food they want to foist on everyone else first -- to test and see if their programs work - BEFORE pushing the program onto the public.

I bet we'd see much more sane legislation coming from them that way.

It's scary that so many people with murderous ideas have managed to manipulate themselves into positions where they can actually do great harm to millions if they can muster enough votes. Democracy doesn't always work well.

67. "Democracy doesn't always work well." Some of the founders worried about this, and wanted voting
to only be open to the very educated.

In fact, that is what PUBLIC education was supposed to be about... having a citizenry capable of independent thought, not just for a meal ticket.

"1 of 100 1. Eden Prairie, MN
WINNER
Top 100 rank: 1
Population: 64,000
Unemployment: 5.1%
Compare Eden Prairie to Top 10 Best Places

Why is Eden Prairie No. 1 this year? Not only is it family-friendly, it has a dynamite economy too.
At 5.1%, its unemployment rate is nearly one percentage point below the county rate and more than four points below the national average. It helps when you've got 50,000 jobs right in town.

Major employers include Fortune 500 trucking company C.H. Robinson, hearing-aid maker Starkey Labs, and the Minnesota Vikings, whose practice facility and front office are here. As for fiscal strength, Moody's gives the town a perfect AAA bond rating.

While it doesn't have much of a downtown, there's plenty of outer beauty: from gently rolling hills to 17 lakes that residents flock to year-round for swimming and ice skating. Town parks are laced with 125 miles of running, hiking, and biking trails.

No wonder residents rank among the healthiest people in the nation. Add in top-notch schools and safe streets and you've got a place that's tough to beat." --Ismat Mangla

===============

Columbia Heights - pretty much the opposite - old community - started in Territory days - close to Mississippi River (St. Anthony) Falls that provided power in the early days and was the center of development. It is very international these days just as it was in its earliest days with all the immigrants - modest to very modest incomes.

Eden Prairie was just land when Columbia Heights was developed. There might be people in Eden Prairie who have never been to Columbia Heights and v.v.

A Catholic Church on the edge has an Ecuadorian rector. There are many stories like that.

CNN Money won't be writing up Columbia Heights, though CHeights does have hills and a very early golf course.

I hope her constituents appreciate her.

87. This will work for state legislatures but not US Congress. Republican Reps are too Rich. They can
buy their own health insurance on the side for two years to compensate.
