Voter ID Spends Millions, Solves Nothing
Posted by Blog Boss on May 9th, 2011

Demonstrations of fiscal hypocrisy, pleas for legislative restraint in the spirit of voter access, even comparisons to the Soviet Union failed to thwart the Joint Finance Committee from approving an amended Voter ID bill that will be fast tracked by both the Assembly and Senate. Among the 12 Republicans voting on the bill Monday afternoon were four GOP senators facing possible recall by the voters on July 12.

The bill, if passed, will cost Wisconsin taxpayers more than $6 million over the next two years. (“But, aren’t we broke?”) Plus the UW System will need to spend more than $1 million to issue new ID cards for all the current cards that won’t comply with the new bill.

And here’s a Fun Fact to counter the bill’s supporters who say it’s about fighting fraud.

FUN FACT

The measure could prevent people from voting in another’s name, but not the most common form of voter fraud – felons voting while on state supervision.

The state Department of Justice and Milwaukee County district attorney’s office have prosecuted 20 cases of voter fraud from the November 2008 election. None involve people voting in someone else’s name at the polls.

3. I bet straight ticket voting makes it harder to juggle the numbers.
If people vote straight ticket than all the candidates will have the same number of vote. It would be harder to throw an extra thousand votes into the open bag for one candidate.

4. Well it might not solve anything, but it will help Republicans depress the votes against them.
Isn't that what this is really about? They know their policies will erode their base and energize the opposition over time...so they need to make it as difficult as possible to let people vote them out of office.

5. It solves the Republican's problem of all those darned voter, especially....
...the new voters.

You can fight back by becoming a Special Registration Deputy with the authority to register new voters on a state-wide basis.

Per my information, in Wisconsin state training for Special Registration Deputies (SRDs) was suspended until after the May Special Elections. The SRD program will be revisited in mid-May and training may be scheduled depending on Board staff work priorities at that time.

To sign up for becoming a Special Registration Deputy, call Allison Coakley, Training Coordinator, Elections Division, Wisconsin Government Accountability Board: allison.coakley@wi.gov or (608) 261-2033.
