The public library’s board of trustees will begin the process of closing the library and liquidating its association, officials said Tuesday.
The announcement came almost a week after the Library Board of Trustees committed to keeping the library open through the end of the year by increasing fund-raising efforts and relying more on volunteers, among other things.
“This decision is reached reluctantly as there was hope that with aggressive fund raising, changes in services and support from the mayor and council, the library could remain open,” the library’s director, Virginia Beckman, said in a press release. “Unfortunately, the mayor and council refuse to work with the library. The mayor has suddenly asked that the library pay the cost of utilities, something which the library never paid before. In addition, the mayor and council have asked for rent payments for 2011.”
